I 100% agree. I lift at a golds gym in central Illinois and the personal trainers are garbage. There's no hard work being done, it's just socializing and occasionally moving weights.
@TRiGGER_HAPPY6199 жыл бұрын
+Clayton Bragg I deadlift at 24hour. First off they have the hexagon looking plates. So I put pads down where the plates are when I deadlift. And trainers tell me I'm going to mess up the pads. So when I take em off. I don't vang the weights and they tell me I'm to loud. FML

What is wrong with the commercial gym industry? Why are we being targeted for wanting to better ourselves? Why are gyms like Planet Fitness trying to make it cute to insult bodybuilders and train with no intensity? Why the hell aren't we doing something about this? Clearly we have the numbers to speak up and get fitness back on the right track! WE PAY THE BILLS WITH OUR MEMBERSHIP DUES!!! SO BACK OFF!
@Snakeye8089 жыл бұрын
+ScottHermanFitness There are different gyms for different types of exercisers. I like it that way. People who like to be mellow, lift light weights and do cardio can go to Planet Fitness. Their business model is beneficial to hardcore lifters because it keeps them out of gyms dedicated to lifting heavy weight. It would grind our gears even more if every time we went to the gym lazy folks were lounging on machines we want to use.
@UselessInnovations9 жыл бұрын
+Snakeye808 You don't get it do you? Scott's point is, gyms are shifting to catter the lazy, people that go there and hog the benches or the machines doing nothing. Gyms getting rid of their squat racks because the people using the groan or yell while lifting heavy, gyms not letting you deadlift. Scott's gym never stopped anyone from doing stuff until recently. I've seen an increment on old people and "moms" joining gyms. And said gyms, end up folding to their complaints.
@Randomguy43619 жыл бұрын

@Snakeye8089 жыл бұрын
+UselessInnovations I reckon you're the one who doesn't get it. To reiterate, it's nice to have gyms that cater to those individuals, thereby providing them with a gym environment they feel comfortable in. There are plenty of gyms where others can go to lift heavy and slam weights. Everybody wins this way. When all types of lifters are trying to cram into one style of gym, everybody loses, and some people give up exercising all together because they don't like the gym atmosphere.

I've been subscribed to Scott since I started lifting (~4-5 years ago) and he has provided me with the foundation of lifting. Scott provided me with the motivation that I needed to lift weights. Nowadays, I've grown to watch other different channels to fit my new needs in the gym and I don't watch the videos as much. The title of the video caught my eye and went to click on it. And Scott is 100% correct. It sucks to see Scott angry about the same industry he works in - a person who has motivated, provided key information etc. have someone else say that HE has to tone it down! @Greenblood609 жыл бұрын
People who join gyms--and don't train hard or consistently-- are the ideal customers. They cost the gym a lot less money. Someone like Scott who uses the facility 7/365 and has the nerve to cause wear and tear on the equipment--by using it--as well as running up the electric bill running on the treadmills, or running up the water bill taking a shower after his workout is not the ideal customer. People like you also take up space. Having a bunch of people who never use the gym as members also renders the gym empty or not as crowded, and those members are still paying. If members hardly ever use the gym, that gym can have a lot more memberships than a gym full of members who use the gym regularly.
@XXSomeDudeXX9 жыл бұрын
+Greenblood60 This comment gets to the heart of the matter. Completely overlooked too.
@coopertrooper4579 жыл бұрын
+Greenblood60 So you would rather have an empty gym or a gym of people not wanting to really do anything but sit there wishing to be like Arnold but not doing anything towards it! So what if Scott breaks the floor, I imagine if he did he would pay for its repair! But the fact that he is condemned for working hard, an act that is so scarce these days in society, is horrendous! Scott and people like him are the ideal customer because they represent what hard work is really about.
@SteezyJam9 жыл бұрын
+Greenblood60 Lol I have no idea what you're trying to say. First of all, running a business is not as simple as talking about water and electric bills. A lot of economical and financial planning is done before starting up something. Secondly, if you ever looked at the equipment at almost every gym, they have rubber on them. Most also have shock proof flooring as well. Any member that pays the fee is the ideal customer. And if anything, the ones that don't do jack shit at a gym are the ones that take up space and use up water etc. I'm no gym head but when I go into the gym ready to put in work, I always have to work around people just taking up space and just sitting there on their phone. I'm paying money too you know and trying to get something out of it.
@coopertrooper4579 жыл бұрын

The majority of people who go to the gym aren't as serious about lifting as a guy like Scott is. Don't get me wrong, Scott (and others like him) have a dedication to fitness that is admirable and I wish more people were just as motivated. But the fact is most people go to the gym just to go through the motions and act like they're working out, when really their attention is on their phone, or their ipad the whole time. And gym owners know this. So, they are happy to trade the expensive heavy equipment in for smaller, lighter, and primarily CHEAPER equipment to save themselves a buck because they know that most people aren't coming in there with very specific expectations. The gym is a business. And whether you like it or not, they are more concerned with making money than they are with actually helping people to get fit. Big surprise?? Not really...

I went to my friend's gym a while back where he used to work and it's one of these commercial gyms you speak of, that has moved business into Australia from America. I usually train at a "bodybuilding" gym, so I'm used to people doing heavy compounds, making noise, grunting around me. But at this commercial gym, people kept gawking over at me while I was deadlifting, like it was unheard of to see a woman, let alone a person deadlift. The trainers kept glaring me off, and it was beyond uncomfortable to be there, and I realised the motto that was scattered across all the equipment was "no judgements", which was fucking ironic.

Couldn't agree more, Scott. Went to a gym near Boston for almost 10 years. Got told repeatedly that I shouldn't be "slamming" weights while doing deadlifts (working sets were around 365 for up to 5 reps). Eventually got to the point where one day I came in and there were stickers all over the mirrors and walls saying "slamming weights is prohibited". It was clear this was directed at me as I was the only one ever spoken to more than once about this. I eventually sucked it up and spent a few hundred dollars to get bumper plates, bars, a bench, and a rack, and happily deadlift in my own basement whenever I please. Happy to report my thin, old basement floor hasn't experienced any damage.

Couldn't agree more. I don't want to feel paralyzed at the gym because a hard workout might intimidate beginners or fair weather patrons. If anything it's a motivator...when I first started I looked up to those massive guys killing it on the squat rack, deadlifting heavy, or having their buddy spot them as they tried for a new max bench. Let's build each other up, not tear each other down.

I agree 1000% I was kicked out of Planet Fitness I went to with my friend. Here's the kicker, I wasn't picked out for lifting I was kicked out for what I was going to lift. I put three plates (each side) on the leg press because I hate squatting on a smith machine. Then just before I sit down one of the gym workers come over to me and tell me that I can't use that much weight on the leg press. And I'm like WTF. And he goes well if you don't agree you can leave! And I went off on him. I told them that if they don't want people to press that much weight then cut the fucking bars short. And I was walking out my friend was trying to get me to leave and I remember yelling at the guy and a couple people on the treadmill that were looking at me nasty " enjoy your fucking judgment free zone at planet pussy!!"

But when I meet other members who are powerful, looking like my favorite heroes, I can not helped but feel inspired. I have such admiration for you and the men an women that just look freakin glorious. I know one day (soon) I’ll get there. The gym is not a place of insecurity. It should be a place of transcendence. Four things 1) Ease up on the pre-workout. You're gonna have an aneurysm. 2) They actually just had to replace floors at my gym because of dudes likes you who get an ego boost from slamming your weights down. Heavy steel, moving quickly, breaks things. Physics trumps bro science. 3) If you can't set your weight down in a controlled fashion, it's too heavy for you. 4) If none of the above sways you, go find a gym that has the necessary equipment for olympic style lifting. Planet fitness is a Mom gym.

This is an issue at my gym too... the trainers are more interested in chatting up the women... seriosuly, i was at the end of a chest session finishing with some tri extensions on the cables, and there was a hot woman on the cables next to me training her ass and hams, the trainer comes in, leans on my weights while i'm on a rest and goes to her "so what brings you here today beautiful?" i was thinking, WTF is he for real? i asked him to move off my weights as he continued to splash his swag over her. because i'm only a 5"9 160lb male they don't give a shit. and they play music like justin fucking beiber and miley cyrus... seriously i don't wanna be listening to that shit while working out, who decided that was motivating??? it's not motivating at all, i have to bring my own music but it's a pain when i forget earphones or whatever... it's commercial as fuck, though it's location from my work enables me to work out every lunch time so i stay...

"The SMAHT kids." I love that accent bud. I agree with you. Honestly it reminds me of the fat acceptance movement. Everyone nowadays is such a delicate special snowflake that anything that challenges their insecurities is discriminated against. Just like how that one instagram model who had a baby and then posted a image the day after her birth where she was skinny and hot because she worked out, got attacked saying she was fat shaming people. This gym sounds like it has a bunch of pussies muscle shaming people. The owners only care about their image and money and lose sight in what is really important. I guarantee the constant customer acquisition of finding new clients (who probably on average only stay 1 month) is much higher than it would be to keep a smaller dedicated group of customers. They should want to keep the ones who are dedicated and will be using the same gym for years. But they get complains or a bad Yelp review and all of a sudden they try to cater to this "offended" group. Now someone lifting heavy is intimidating and reminds them that they will need to work really hard to get there. It makes them feel bad so they complain? Are you fucking kidding me? There are two types of gym goers. Ones like that who aren't there to work hard and want to feel they accomplished something but not willing to put the effort in. Then there are guys like me who see those jacked guys and make it a goal to get like that. I only started going to the gym about 8 months ago (3-5x a week consistently) but when I first started, I couldn't bench 85lbs, seeing the guys doing 2 plates was encouraging to me to make a change. Now I am at a plate and hungry to keep going up in weight. Fuck those guys, I'd go to another gym.

+starkat70 I so agree on this. Just found out the difference about conservative and liberal just this past week... had no clue that the distinction was so clear. Living in Europe we have other terms for the matter but the subject is the same. "Everyone should fit in and no one is to be offended" propaganda, truly sucks. No freedom to choose anything nowadays =/ not suprised it's penetrated the gym-culture too, the madness is everywhere.
@starkat709 жыл бұрын
***** conservatives don't care about being offended u turn on the tv or u simply go outside there is easily something for a conservative to be offended by, whether it be constantly mocked for your beliefs or the mockery of your God ...simply put conservatives understand the real world and expect no different ...neoliberals don't understand the real world and expect everything and everyone to agree with them and change to suite their tender sensibilities. True Liberals in the original sense who recognize the destructiveness of the PC culture are really Conservatives they just don't know it yet. I know this because I'm a Liberal and I'm a Proud Conservative.

+starkat70 Way to bring politics into a fitness video...this is why your country is falling apart at the seems.
@starkat709 жыл бұрын
newuser1234567 No its much bigger then just politics its the realization that there is an underlying ideological philosophy that drives every human being, it shapes their ideas and their beliefs and how they see the world in which they live irrespective of reality. Its the Basic understanding of why ppl think in the way they do and what they do. You first must know where they are coming from Ideologically for you understand why they see the world the way they do. Once you know why they think the way they do, u know exactly from what Ideological and philosophical perspective they are coming from.

This is gonna be a lengthy true story Let me say a few things about my gym here in India It's YMCA(nuff said) and an average gym The problem is that even though I am a member and have paid for the gym services( I joined last November) the trainer claims he only trains for extra cash ( and told me not to ask the office about it) But I decided to let it go because I didn't want to cause any trouble. just yesterday when he was training his chest, he did them in a very fast tempo( half rep ofc) I asked him if it ever bothered his shoulders his response was" Well you do your workouts from the internet your shoulders are gonna hurt" I never said I ever got shoulder pain, but the tone was so condescending I just wanted to smash the bar on his chest Moreover, he knows nothing outside his routine . He said 5x5 stronglifts wont help me ( Mainly because he didnt know what it was XD) . My massive progress proved otherwise. And guess what, he doesn't think dead-lifts are important. I don't claim I know a lot about workouts, but I'm pretty sure he isn't really qualified to be an instructor.

No way. I got MOTIVATED. That is the difference between US and THEM (younger generation) Folks from my days got bullied in school. Real bullying, not online bullying. We had to directly and sometimes physically confront our fears. Outer and inner. I guess we can't get too angry at gym managers and owners. They are not the ones who wussified the younger generations. They as businessmen have to take care of their investment. Too bad. I miss the old gyms from before this PC century. The clanking of iron.
