Harden is a genius. He can change his game and find other ways. Do you really think he hasn't faced that approach in all those years and Pip was the sole genius to think that? As T-Mac said and Pip agreed, the truth is when a scorer gets it going we know he's unstoppable. Look at Lebron, Durant and Harden. The thing of his team in playoff is that his roster lacks the gas to keep it going against tough opposition. Harden won't give you 70 and steal every game. The guy is already overloaded. Give him a break.

Yep, in the modern NBA many teams don't have a go-to center and that is one of the reasons. If your star player is a center, he can often go into foul trouble and your backup probably isn't that good because you are spending your cap money on your star. But if your star players are guards and forwards you can just have 2-3 centers who aren't that aren't star players or even full-time starters, but can just be in there to protect the rim and foul when needed.

@UtotheJ6 жыл бұрын
I agree with you that this is a GREAT segment, but it's because they are sharing the intricacies of ACTUAL basketball approaches. Not analyzing and compare player values. Players are actually very poor evaluators of talent and team management Hence, almost every player Lebron has publicly endorsed has been overrated with huge team-destroying contracts. Analysts do NOT need to play in order to analyze. Some of the brightest minds in basketball today are people that have never played in the NBA. Players may not be good coaches (Isiah Thomas, Bill Russell), coaches may not be good GM/Presidents (Phil Jackson, Stan Van Gundy, Doc Rivers, Tom Thibidou)... bottom line... being a legendary player does NOT mean you are good at evaluating talent (Michael Jordan).

In the 80's you had the Celtics, the Pistons, the Lakers. 90's you only had the Bulls and then a few competitive but not nearly dynasty level... because of injuries like Penny Hardaway, derailing some potential dynasties, and an initial strain on the spreading out of talent due to recent expansion 1989.

Fun fact: Pippen is currently the last of only three players in NBA history to record 200+ steals w/ 100+ blocks in a season. MJ was the first and did so twice in a row, while Hakeem also accumulated 200+ blocks. Back in the late 20th century, annual steals leaders typically reached the 200+ mark (A. Robertson peaked at 301) and blocks leaders with 300+ (Eaton at 456). In the post-2000 era, such marks were only reached thrice and once respectively, all before 2010. The 1984 draft alone provided a yearly race for the steals title between MJ, Stockton (all-time steals leader), and A. Robertson (all-time spg leader); plus Hakeem as the only center to record 200+ steals. Guards won the DPOY five times in the 80s, once in the 90s, and zero in the 2000s & 2010s.

Great strategy by Scottie actually. Shows he's a defensive savant. While Harden is a great finisher and passer, he turns the ball over a lot, and his finishing on the right side is less deadly then letting him step back from 3. While Harden still is gonna get buckets, this strategy will tire him out more. Harden isn't known for being super in shape so I think I'd bet on him gassing out before a defender like Scottie, especially given his usage. Harden also isn't the most athletic guy and is undersized compared to Scottie, so Scottie can probably also come up with a few from behind blocks using his length. Kawhi actually does this a lot, where he purposely baits smaller defenders into lanes and uses his length to block the shot from behind.

@Dawei Zhao that is a good point it's simple physics two objects cannot operate in the same space at the same time if you are in the offensive player's face he cannot get the ball no ball no score it's not rocket science

@@kingvaress7294 Yeah true teams with elite wings should definitely try to get switches on Harden. This has worked really well on mediocre 1 on 1 defenders like Curry. Unfortunately Harden conserves himself on defence and just let's his man by him into help defence, while Curry actually puts a lot of effort into defense even when put in a mismatch situation, but either way I think they could definitely wear him down.

@Dawei Zhao Absolutely that as well. However, putting full court pressure is not really a new strategy. It's also not sustainable for an entire game, which is why I focused on the on ball half court defense. Its not very typical to purposely let Harden have the lane and chase him. Also while Ben Wallace was a fantastic defender, Shaq still dominated that series. Chauncey Billups himself said their strategy was to purposely single coverage Shaq so the Lakers would keep feeding him the ball anticipating that it would frustrate Kobe into forcing up shots when he got touches. That was their main strategy although they did try denying Shaq the ball a bit, Shaq for the most part still dominated.

What are you talking about? Harden is a freak athlete with endurance to go 40 minutes and at 6'5, 230 hes definitely not undersized. Harden is too quick for bigs and too strong for guards. He's definitely known for his insane strength and athleticism, you couldn't be further off base. In fact he's so strong and athletic, he's a fairly underrated post up defender when a center switches on to him. I've seen quite a few big men try to post up on Harden in the paint and try to bully him back towards the basket only to be surprised that they are trying to push a brick wall back. The dudes offense wears down entire teams of defenders...

Scottie Pippen, one of the greatest basketball players of all time. When you have greats teaching the audience about the game, you better listen carefully.
