What about the other players? How old were they? If Pippen said the Bulls could not win because they were young, you can't say the Pistons did not get old! @@mikekirkland2487 That's precisely the point...the wear and tear to have to go not just through those 89 and 90 seasons, but also the grind of the 88 and 87 playoffs...it caught up with them. The best thing about MJ having such a bad team early is that he didn't have much extra wear and tear put on his body the first 5 years of his career. It wasn't until 1989 that he made a playoff run of more than 10 games. What people always fail to understand is the physical AND mental toll being on top takes. That's why MJ doing it 2x makes him the undisputed GOAT in my eyes. You take everyone's best shot basically for five years (I don't count 1991 because they were still hunters that first run) and beat them all. The Pistons just didn't have it in them by the spring of 1991 because of the wars they had already been in. The proof is what happened AFTER the fact...the Pistons never seriously challenged for anything with that core after 1991. Same with Magic and the Lakers. MJ never got the satisfaction of knocking off Bird's Celtics in the postseason.

Finally, someone got it right. Scottie and Stephen A. explained it perfectly. They got beat down physically and emotionally by the Pistons 3 years straight. In the last dance Jordan even says how hard he hit the gym and bulked up because of how physical the Pistons were with him. Beating the best or getting over that hump is what propels great players into elite status. Having a mountain to climb figuratively of course is motivating. It made the Bulls and Jordan specifically change how he trained. How he worked out in the offseason. How he practiced. Helped him achieve greatness. Even he didn't think he was capable of. @Dexter's Finest That's true. But what Max said is also true. If you really were around during that time and saw/experienced that rivalry in REAL TIME, you'd know that the Pistons were operating on borrowed time vs CHI. In '88 DET won 4-1. In '89 they won 4-2. And in '90, they won 4-3. NOTE: CHI was the ONLY TEAM to get 2 wins off of DET in '89. They crushed everyone else, including LA in the Finals. And in Game 7 in '90, Pippen was a no-show (migraine), and BJ, Cartwright, Hodges and Grant ALL DISAPPEARED with a COMBINED 11-57 (19%) performance. Had MJ gotten the LEAST BIT of help from 'em, they probably would've won their 1st title in '90. You could see the Pistons demise vs CHI coming a mile away and was just a matter of time. And DET knew it as well. That's why they concentrated so hard on mentally/psychologically intimidating them so much. Because they knew that the key to maintaining their success against CHI, lay in delaying/disrupting the mental maturity of MJ's teammates.

The bulls beat the pistons when most of that piston team was still 28-31 years old, which are still prime years especially in that NBA when players went to college for 3-4 years. Bulls are simply the better team stacked up against each other. Prime for prime. If you want to talk about a prime piston team against a young bulls team, go ahead and be like baby Isiah. They explained it quite well in the Last Dance - in short they had to improve so much and they beat the pistons in 91 because they were so good and yes the pistons had declined a little (isiah had a long hand injury if i recall correctly). In long : In 1984, Jordan was a rookie in a mediocre team. Then thanks to Jerry Reinsdorf (the new owner) and Jerry Krause (the new GM), they eventually managed to build a great cast : John Paxson, then a year later Grant and Pippen, then Cartwright - all the way the team got stronger but was defeated 3 times in a row (in 7 games in 1989-1990 in the PO by the Pistons. Meanwhile, for the season 1989-1990 Phil Jackson took over as new coach, and the triangle offense was implemented. So thanks to the organization and the players, they set the whole pieces, and the team became great in 1990-1991 (i compared a little the PO against the pistons in 90 and 91 : they had all improved and most importantly, did not rely solely on MJ to score). After that, thank you Detroit : they had learnt the hard way what it takes to win the last game of the season.

EVERY team was physical back in those days, the Pistons just got the bad rap because they were the city of Detroit, a predominately black city, let's be real. They we're competing and keep up with the "darling favorites", white collared LA Lakers & Boston Celtics, who, by the way, if you ever watch the finals of those 2 teams, used to fight each other very ruthlessly on a regular basis. The Pistons were competing with those two teams at a high level and the media and society did not like that. Detroit was made out to be the bad guy, thus the term "bad boys". I don't think so, if it was the Pistons that won and beat everyone else THEN they could take credit, to me it just sounds like a team who got second place and are still bitter about it, can't admit that Bulls were the better team - just face the music Isiah you lost to a better team, yeah you were good, but not good enough, it seems like his ego just can't admit that even 30 years later

Also Isiah wants to be included in the inner circle of Bird-Magic-MJ triumvirate. Just imagine Isiah had back to back titles but he was not included in that circle. What is worst MJ is responsible on him not being part of the Dream Team bec of his unsportmanship when MJ finally bested Isiah Thomas in 1991. Isiah deserves to be in the Dream Team but MJ will not play if Isiah is in the team. Everybody knows Isiah was not included bec MJ does not want to play with him. On another note, MJ could have been the Team Captain of the Dream Team but he let Magic and Bird to have that honor. Noteworthy to mention MJ let go of his ego as well as the other NBA superstars when it comes to the games of the 1992 Olympics. Their chemistry is amazing.
