Shaun, thanks for all these vlogs. Loving them. Just to set straight a couple of things you mentioned in this video - Grant O'Rourke who plays Rupert (of Angus and Rupert) lives in Edinburgh, so the two of you would probably be accent twins. Oh, and the brilliant Bill Paterson who plays Ned Gowan - Ned does keep the MacKenzie accounts, but is really a lawyer. Just a wee bit of Outlander trivia for you. Keep up the good work!

Hate to say it Shaun, but as a Scot myself, much as I like your accent because all Scottish accents sound like home, it is not 'refined' and not really like Sam Heughan's at all. I would not have described you as having a George St accent. You have far too many glottal stops for that and your vowels are too fronted. I think you also have a mild case of Edinburgh accent superiority. :) Listen to people like Annie Lennox (Aberdeen), Kirsty Young (East Kilbride) or Peter Capaldi (Glasgow), Andy Murray (Dunblane), or Ewan McGregor (Crieff) to hear refined accents from other parts of Scotland. Also, there are people in Scotland outside the Gàidhealtachd who can do a Highland accent, though I will say that they're mostly older people who heard more Highland accents when they were young. Glasgow especially had a huge influx from the Highlands and many Glaswegians today had Highland grandparents who spoke Gaelic.

But if you're not Scottish, you're not really qualified to assess the accuracy of a fake Scottish accent are you? Not any more than I am, as a Scottish person, to assess the accuracy of a fake Dutch accent. That aside, prior to the internet-driven mass Americanisation of the Dutch accent, the natural historically spoken Dutch language & the Scottish traditional language, Auld Scots, have many similarities; in pronunciation, in meaning & the further North towards the Highlands you go, also in speech pattern. If anyone was going to get a Highland accent right, it would be a Scottish or Dutch actor; I've heard some atrocious fake Scots accents on tv & I do have to tell myself to relax & ignore some single syllable shortcomings in Outlander because the majority did do a great job. I also can't fairly criticise Lotte's accent when Sam Heughan's accent is so far from perfect lol.

I am a huge Outlander fan and have been so impressed with every aspect of how they have made the series. I am curious about how you and other Scottish people feel about the Gaelic being spoken throughout the series. I know they brought in Àdhamh Ó Broin to help train all the Highlander actors how to correctly speak Gaelic since many of them had never spoken it before.

The language of outlander is scottish gaelic,but cathriona balfe who plays claire was brought up in co. monaghan republic of ireland went to a gaeilscoil which is an irish gaelic language school and is fluent.Scottish and irish gaelic are different languages,but there is a high degree of mutual intelligibility.So she is in fact the only cast member that would come close to a native speaker of scots gaelic.
@michelleflood8220

irishlongsword boland not necessarily im learning both and there is some similarities which when you consider they are both members of the goidelic group of Celtic languages but the accents of the letters are different and the intonation is very different are two of the differences but Scotland has bilingual signs same as Ireland does and also gaeltachts but another difference is Irish kids learn Gaelic from around 4/5 till 18 whereas gaidhlig is more a choice of learning it or not also rte promotes gaelige in its programming whereas unless you're in a Gaeltacht you are unlikely to hear it spoken . Caitriona would find it easy to pick up on the Gaelic but she doesn't use it in the show only people that do are Garry as Colum , Graham as Dougal and sam as Jamie the rest of the highlanders apart but cait doesn't need to as Claire is a Englishwoman so she doesn't need it !

Very very few people speak Gaelic today and even at the time of Outlander, it was only one of the Scottish languages, Scots was more common what most of the characters in Outlander speak basically Scottish-English with occasional emphasis on Scots words, though generally they don't use the majority of basic Scots words that are different from English. So they only typically use Scots for a small amount of the dialogue and English for the rest.

Season 1, episode 6 “The Garrison Commander” features a scene with Dougal Mackenzie & Claire meeting English military men who are dining. At around 6:20 Dougal speaks in such a way that is impossible for non-Scots to understand! It seems that he did so on purpose... given the audience that he clearly despises. This part really stood out to me with regard to accents.

I've been to Scotland 3 times and had a marvelous time each time I went. I'm married to a man of Scottish descent so we were always interested in the country. About 25 years ago, I came across the first Outlander book and I've been a fan ever since. Before one of the trips to Scotland, I decided I would try to learn Scottish Gaelic since I, too, have Scottish ancestry. I spent about 4 months learning phrases. I was incredibly disappointed when I learned that almost NO ONE spoke the language in all the places we went in Scotland. It's so sad that a language has almost died out like that. I have wondered that since so much time has past since Culloden and the Clearances, would the British not mind if Scottish Gaelic was reintroduced into the schools as an elective class. You could have a Gaelic Speakers Club (or would that worry the monarchy??)

The decline of the language was due mainly to Royal interference in the 1600s (King James VI & I demanding that Gaelic lairds send their eldest child to Lowland schools to learn English (not Scots ! ) in the 1609 Iona Statutes. That was followed by the repression of Gaelic culture after Culloden, then the Highland Clearances when Gaelic speakers were either forced into emigration or were provided financial incentives to emigrate. A later blow was the 1872 Education (Scotland) Act passed in Westminster - far away from Scotland - which imposed compulsory state primary education but in English only. It took more than 100 years of campaigning before the Gaelic language societies achieved the right in the 1980s to set up Gaelic-medium schools. Since 2005, there has been a Gaelic Language Act passed by the Scottish Parliament, and efforts are being made to promote the language through Scotland. When Duolingo launched its Scottish Gaelic course in late Nov 2019, the uptake was huge. In March 2022, the course had already passed the 1.2 million learners mark. According to Duolingo's statistics, somewhere between 25% and 30% of those learners worldwide are in the UK. So about 400,000 to date, and most of those will have been in Scotland. In 2011, the census for Scotland recorded about 80,000 people who said they had some knowledge of Gaelic. We'll have to wait until 2023 for the results of the 2022 census, but it's a safe bet that the numbers will have gone up. The 2021 attitudes survey in Scotland showed that the younger generation in Scotland are more in favour of promoting Gaelic than the older. That said, I'm 66 and am learning Gaelic as an emigrant, while my brother, 69, who stayed in Scitland, is learning it there. We both started without the other knowing.

So glad Diana Galbadons work is so well received in Scotland. I read the books years ago when I was just a teenager. I always thought of going to the Scottish highlands and experiencing the culture and the history. At the time I always imagined Kenneth Brannaugh as Jamie, even though he's English. I even wrote Diana Galbadon to ask her if she would release the rights to a movie production company and asked her if she would be ok with casting him. She was very kind in her reply and said she would consider it, that was in 1998. Funny how things go. Yes, the Scottish accent is quite difficult to master. I've made a good effort but it's really difficult, even the "soft Scottish" is hard.

✨Shaun: You could be the leader of a whole new generation of Scottish Outlander fans! Very interesting observations about the different accents *within* Scotland. I've had fun mimicking some of the Outlander characters when talking with TwinkleMom (we both have so much of the dialogue committed to memory after having watched every show from seasons 1 and 2 so many times). It just sounds to me like the way the language *should be* spoken (despite the Outlandish general's protestations about "the King's English," etc.). On another altogether different note, I just discovered that Scotland's official animal is THE UNICORN‼️🦄 How perfect is that?! Nessie, unicorns, devas (the faeries that live in Findhorn -- have you ever been there?) ... you live in a truly magical place. Keep up the great work and be well!✨

My Costa Rican wife, who speaks English very well, watched 'Rob Roy' and loved it and followed the story right along, but at the end she asked me, "What language was that?"

You should come to North Carolina once you get to that part in the series. I love my state. The best time to come is in the fall to see the change of the trees in the mountains and to experience all the festivals.

Outlander is just scrumptious. I've been interested in Scottish history forever -- my grandfather said his people came from the Butt of Lewis. Nobody mentions Nigel Tranter -- a great Scots writer who wrote well-researched historical fiction and I have read at least 6 of his books -- he wrote many more. They really teach Scots history in a fascinating way. The last time I was in Scotland I was surprised not to find his books in the bookstore. They should be brought back!

Hullo! I'm a first generation Canadian.... My mom was born in Paisley, a lot of my family still lives in Scotland.... I've been reading the Diana Gabaldon books since I was 22... that's 27 years now. Just so you know.... she is a professor in science and does a lot of research in her work before she started writing. now she takes between 3-5 years between books as she does that much research on the time she is writing about. she is very adamant about getting the research right. you will love the books! the show is great but the books are awesome!

I'm so glad you're also reading the book now! While the series does an amazing job at capturing the essence of the books, there's always so much more you can get from reading it. Like many other Amerians, I have Scottish ancestors and Outlander has fueled the fire in me to get to Scotland one day!

My wife got be watching Outlander because I grew up speaking Scottish Gaelic; my grandmother on my mother's side was from Scotland as was her family, from from Banffshire on the N. Sea to Old Deer, Inverness and the area. I was the only one that could understand my grandmother when she spoke Gaelic. must have come to me in my genes lol. I always read to her in Gaelic and was inspired to learn more about my Scottish Heritage, picked up bagpipes and learned how to play as a teenager and took part in all of the Highland Games, I practiced throwing Telephone poles for fun but in later years have been loosing my reading skills but can still speak with a Scottish Accent, fun to play with but now need to hone up my skills as living in FL USA we go to Dunedin Scottish Village and started chatting with a man from Scotland an he asked what part of Scotland I was from as I had a Northern sound to my speaking so here I m to learn how I am speaking and I like you channel. I told the fellow I met I actually had never been to Scotland yet but plan to go. He laughed and said I had him completely fooled. He was from Glasgow. Keep up the good work

If you listen to Caitreona Bailiff in interviews speaking in her everyday accent, she sounds more like a New Yorker than an Irish lass. I've never understood why British people can do such spot on American accents while Americans trying to speak in a British accent usually sound really corny. i.e. Dick Van Dyke in Mary Poppins. He attempts a cockney accent that would make Rubeus Hagrid's pet spider cringe. Notable exception, you would never know Peter Dinklage is from New Jersey in Game of thrones because Lord Tyrion is so well spoken.
@lordracula2461

I would disagree, Peter Dinklage sounds like an american trying to layer over it with a posh British accent. His pitch and tones are wrong and his R sounds are characteristically american. Caitriona Balfe has been living in the USA for 15 years therefore can't be expected to speak with a strong accent in interviews.

I feel your pain. My dad's family are all from southern Tennessee but back in the 1960's one of my great-uncles went back to live in Inverness and lived there until 1990 when he moved back to America and died two years later. My grandfather and Granny all have their history traced back to Scotland and mostly from Inverness and a few cousins here and there in the Hebrides and Glasgow. The last time I went back to Scotland and England I at first spoke with a Southern accent which meh, the English really were not friendly at all as a result, and then they got even worse when I relented back to the Inverness/Highlander accent that I had become so accustomed to as a child being around my great uncle and cousins. I have my Southeastern/American accent and I can go from that accent to a Scottish accent pretty quickly and often interchangeably.

Ditto Lordracula -- Peter Dinklage's British accent is horrendous. John Malkovich's British accent is similarly bad, almost as if they had the same [bad] dialect coach.

We have the same thing in Belgium : there is no "Belgian accent", (in the French-speaking region at least) because the accent from Liège is completely different from how people in Brussels speak for example ! I couldn't even try to mimic it, there are so many differences Thanks for the video it was very instructive ;)

I am the daughter of a Scottish immigrant to America. I read the books about a decade ago. My gran, who is from Glasgow, caught me watching outlander when it first came out. I thought she would have an issue with the nudity. She said, direct quote, imagine it done in an accent from Coatbridge and an 81 year old woman: look at the arse on that man! She then went on to read all of the books in about 4 weeks. She loves the series!

Shaun, thanks so much for doing these vlogs. I just discovered your vlog. I am an Outlander fan. I have read all the books and seen every episode. As an American with some Scottish ancestry, I love everything Scottish. Growing up I was enthralled by the Scottish accent of my grandfather's cousin's Scottish warbride. I'm not entirely sure exactly where she grew up in Scotland, but she had an Edinburgh accent (mostly). She left Scotland in 1945 or '46, and never went back (very sad), but she never lost her beautiful accent. She also taught me to appreciate Scottish history and food. I loved getting to go to tea at her house because her bannocks and scones were amazing. Keep up the great work!
