Fun fact about the Katy Bucees: When hurricane Harvey was flooding out Houston they had just finished building it and were almost ready to open. A great many first responders started using their big unopened parking lot as a staging area. The store manager just threw the doors open and told the police, firemen, tow truck drivers, electricians, paramedics to take whatever they needed. They even gave away the fuel.

In Galveston, you should eat at Gaido's and get some of their charbroiled butterfly shrimp and scallops. And be sure to ride the trolley over to the Strand. Other places to see is the Sea Wall, Murdoch's Bathhouse, the Shipwreck museum, the Elissa ironclad sailboat, Bishop's Palace, Seawolf Park, and the Train Museum. Lots to see and do in Galveston. That is one of my favorite vacation spots.

It is so interesting to me, having grown up in the northwest side of the Houston metro, to see all of the things we might view as mundane, normal, or just flat out take for granted, be viewed with such amazement. In a way it gives me a different perspective. Seeing gators in the bayous and marshes, huge oaks covered with Spanish moss, the millions of birds we have here on the gulf coast,just seemed normal to me, but is easily forgotten that most of the world doesn’t see this regularly, and that it is all a beautiful thing to see. What a world we live in huh?

I guess they didn't take you up north on I-45 to see the ginormous statue of Sam Houston. Fun fact: The Dallas zoo built a ginormous status of a giraffe browsing the treetops. They had the sculptor add six inches to the giraffe's tongue so it would be taller than the statues in Houston.

I am so glad you made it to Houston and especially Galveston! The latter city is one of my favorite places to visit. Cannot wait to see if you visited the Strand and the Elissa and got to play on the beach on the Sea Wall. If I had hosted you, would love to have shown you my little home town, Richmond. There is a Mason memorial to a Scotsman named Robert Gillespie. He drowned in a flood of the Brazos River back in the 1820 but his friends, the Mortons set up a monument to his memory. And that became significant for Richmond because when one of Santa Ana's generals came through the area when they were chasing Sam Houston (who was of Scottish ancestry as well - McDonald clan), the general stopped the Mexican troops from burning down Richmond because he saw that Masonic monument - General Cos was a Mason as well! At least that's the story I grew up hearing about. Richmond was also home to the second President of the Texas Republic, Mirabeau B Lamar. Anyway, am really glad you got to see Brazos Bend, another favorite place of mine and that you got to see alligators! I hope you were able to see the Observatory there as well.
@pitapanda83192 жыл бұрын
Some years ago we used to visit Brazos Bend quite often. But we called it the alligator park. We found the best time to see some wildlife, for us, was around sundown. But the gators used to lay in the middle of the trails. Also saw way too many snakes. Enjoy your visit.

Wow - I have spent a lot of time in Florida and Louisiana and have never seen an alligator in the wild. Very cool that you got a couple on camera. I remember great summer vacations in Galveston - a week or so at a beachside rental house on stilts, catching crabs in traps with chicken necks for bait, getting HORRIBLE sun burns, and watching water spouts rolling in. Collecting shark teeth and sand dollars, and swimming and seeing dolphins. Nice times. Jelly fish stings - not so much, but even that was a common part of the Galveston experience. I think the houses we used to stay at are gone now -- eaten by one of the hurricanes.

That's what any normal Tunnel Car Wash is like in America. I love Tunnel Car Washes the most because they are so cool and they get your car cleaner than any other kind. After being in a few thunderstorms, you get used to the thunder and lightning. The only time lightning is a bad thing is when it knocks the power out or when it hits something you own.
@WhatDayIsItTrumpDay Жыл бұрын
I was last in Galveston in 1985, Sean, and to be honest, it doesn't look like it's changed all that much in almost 40 years. It was mostly just houses on stilts back then too. We stayed there for about a week with our camper and got to know the town pretty well. My sister and I cried a little bit when we left because we loved it so much. From there we headed up to San Antonio on our way out to El Paso, TX, Carlsbad Caverns & White Sands in SE New Mexico, and then up to Albuquerque, New Mexico for my dad's bi-annual work convention. So Sean, you might wonder why the United States is the most prosperous nation in the world. Well, you crossed one of the reasons why going to the surf side of Galveston. It's the Intercoastal Waterway. Most of the eastern coast of the US has thin barrier islands that form a natural surf break between the open ocean and the mainland, creating a calmer navigatable waterway for ships to travel to different coast ports without having to go out into open Seas. There's only a small area along the western coast of Florida that doesn't have barrier islands, and then they stop completely on the eastern coast of Maryland/Delaware on the other side of the Chessapeake Bay that goes up into Baltimore. The other related main reason why the US is so prosperous is that the Eastern half of the country, from the Central Plains eastward, has the most navigatable rivers in the world COMBINED. Combined with the Intercoastal Waterways, the Rivers form the longest and most extensive network of essentially FREE transportation methods available to man. Think about it. Unlike roads and railroads, you don't have to maintain them hardly at all. Aside from occasional dredging when water levels get too low or too much sediment builds us, they are just doing what flowing water does. Flow. This free form of transportation allows so many goods and raw material move from one part of the country to the next just for the price of fuel. Well, you may think...price of fuel is still a problem, well yes, but think about what it takes to maintain a highway. Almost constant repairs, improvements as traffic levels increase, but with rivers, you just use them. The Second biggest contributor to the prosperity of the US is our below ground assets. Our oil, coal, and natural gas fields. You may have heard that thecUS has the biggest oil reserves in the world. And thought, how is that possible? I thought the Middle East did. Well, I did too. But what people don't realize is that those Middle East deposits are very small, and not very numerous. All of Saudi's fields are just south of Kuwait, and just a small patch of individual circles. Same thing with Iran, Iraq, and Turkey. The US oil fields are MASSIVE. Like solid chunks of land in western Texas, Pennsylvania, eastern Ohio, North Dakota, northern Alaska, and parts of California. They literally dwarf the Mideastern oil fields. The thing is, these massive fields have only been discovered within the past 20 years. Meaning that had we known about them 30 years ago, the whole Gulf War I could have been prevented, because the main reason for kicking Iraq out of Kuwait was because we didn't want Saddam controlling such a large portion of the world's known oil supply then. Had that have happened now, I bet it wouldn't have even gotten an "Eh?" Shoulder Shrug. And if Gulf War hadn't happened, 9/11 wouldn't have happened either and we all know how that changed the world.

The last time I went fishing at Brazos Bend I was standing on a log that went out over the water and dropped back in at the end. I was trying to avoid the trees on the lakes edge so I could cast. I stood there for about ten minutes fishing and looked down and there was an 8 ft gator not 3 feet away laying on the same log looking at me. Scared the living shit out of me!!!

If that were me, you’d have seen a parting of the water as I ran across it to get away lol

@@shaunvlog I was definitely faster getting off the log than I was getting on it. They normally wont mess with you but there's an ingrained fear of them even when you know they wont mess with you.

Down around my hometown, Navasota. Hope you liked the "life-sized" statue of Samuel Houston.

Shaun, before Buc'ees makes it outside the US, they first need to head up north. There's a city in SW Florida called Chokoloskee which also builds their homes on stilts. Great video again. At the end, we saw Mr. Local, but we never got to see Mrs. Local.😮💨

If you have time, head to Huntsville, Texas to the Sam Houston statue and museum. He won Texas Independence from Mexico. It's a huge statue!

Sam Houston's statue is big too. It's 67 feet tall. Austin's is 76 feet. Houston's statue looks like he is walking out of the woods. You see it as you drive along I-45 in Huntsville, north of Houston.

That's not a big storm. Why? "You can see the street." When it's a big storm, the rain is so hard and so 'thick' you can't see 10 feet in front of you.

That little bug is called a rolly polly. If you pick it up it will roll into a little ball for their protection. They are cute little bugs

Hit all my old stomping grounds! I left TX in the middle of Covid lockdown. Last time I was at Brazos the was a gator on the pathway. Everyone was getting a bit too close to it for my liking. Oh yeah, the thunderstorms are the craziest!

Since you had already gone to a Bucee's, should've gone down the road to Sealy and check out Prasek's. It's a more upscale Bucee's. Better kolaches, better bbq, and better jerky but not as big. That rain reminded me of a European trucker who was picking up on the dock when we got 2ft of water in the parking lot in 45 min. He asked if that happens a lot. I had to think about it because I always took it for granted that it does. Don't drown, turn around.
