The purple flowers were on jacaranda trees. If you ever have the chance, you should try Jarritos. It's a Mexican soft drink with some interesting flavors, like tamarind, guava, passion fruit, watermelon, grapefruit, mango, and a few more. My favorite is the tamarind. The pork taco may have been a taco al pastor, which (loosely translated) means "farm style." It's marinated and cooked on a rotating spit, sort of like doner kebab or gyros. Sometimes it's cooked with pineapple. I share your opinion of Hollywood. When I visited there years ago, I expected it to be glamorous on the surface but a bit sleazy underneath. It's not. It's sleazy on the surface. I hope your back feels better soon. All that driving may have caused the problem.

Nothing wrong with taking a tour or hop-on, hop-off bus to get an overview of the place you are visiting. My aunt does that in Europe. She takes a tourist bus ride first, and then decides afterward where she wants to concentrate her time. Not Jeff here. I know there's another day, so I hope you made it to the La Brea Tar Pits. There's a very nice museum that tells about the history of the area and features bones and artifacts pulled out of the tar. The thing that blew me away is that it's on Wilshire Blvd, an oozing fetid mass of tar, surrounded by real estate that costs as much per square foot than our entire house.
@mdsh002 жыл бұрын
Glad you enjoyed your day. As someone from the area, the area around Hollywood Blvd has always been a dump and sadly that's where most tourists get their impression of LA. This city is huge and there are some amazing places to see and eat but it can be a little tough for first timers or if you don't have a local showing you around. Also like others said, the trees with the purple flowers are Jacaranda trees and they grow well all over Southern California. They look beautiful when they are blooming but those flowers are a pain to get off of your car or sidewalk when they fall. The trees can also have shallower roots so they aren't the best to plant near a house.

Jacaranda trees are some of my favorite. We had one in our backyard when I was a kid and I used to lay on all the flowers that came off the tree. I loved them so I’m glad you love them too. Southern California has the best Mexican food and friends who move out of state that’s what they want when they are home for a visit and In N Out burgers. BTW you’re eating what is called street tacos, which is a beef, onions and cilantro and maybe radishes. Not my favorite. I like chicken with lettuce and cheese. My nieces call them white people tacos, but that’s the way they were made back in the day. Next time when you come to LA visit The Grove for shopping and you might see a celebrity. Lots of celebrities who have big money live out of the city. Live in cities like Malibu, Santa Barbara, Encino, Studio City. I’d also recommend going to Universal Studios and take the tram ride of take a tour to see where some of your favorite shows were filmed. Or one of the other studios like Warner Brother or Paramount Studio who all have tours. It is funny how people around the world and even those that live in the MidWest still think Hollywood is like in the old movies. Sadly, it hasn’t been like that since the 1950’s. When the 1960’s and 1970’s and sex, drugs and rock n roll hit, it changed LA and not for the better. Also next time visit our beaches, museums (we are known for aerospace and the museums are amazing) the Getty in Malibu or the Getty off the freeway are amazing or Griffith park Observatory. The El Capitan premier’s the latest Disney movies, which is super fun and across the street from Groman Chinese theater. Both are iconic. End joy the rest of your trip.

Never have understood the obsession with seeing L.A. and Hollywood! I agree with another commenter who recommended taking a food tour for a better experience. Also recommendations to see Universal Studios if you want to see cool stuff about movies. Cos you won't find it anywhere on the streets of Hollywood! Also, you rode right past the Santa Monica Pier! You could have enjoyed the sun and the beach. Maybe some seafood? Anyway, I recommend to all aspiring visitors to adjust your expectations. Stop going to tacky tourist spots and do a little research before you go. Or find a local who can show you around. Avoid disappointment and discover not-so-hidden gems.

Glad you ate somewhere than the typical franchise fast food spots. Ask the people, where the best food or nice spots of your choice is in town. Cheers

Jacaranda blooms are very beautiful, but they stain everything they come in contact with, including the sidewalks!
