Fascinating slice of life from 100 years or so ago. I recall my late father telling me that when the herring fleet was in there were so many boats you could cross the harbour on foot and never touch the water. Having seen these photos I can well believe it. Unfortunately, we didn't appreciate that we were overfishing at the time. If only...

Too true - you can see just how hard life was and how hard those girls worked. The herring trade created a lot of income and work - all those barrels for example will have had to be made. `Cooper` was a good trade back n those days. Apart from suppling UK with herrings an awful lot of the fish went to Germany and Europe. After WW1 this trade tailed off a lot.
