I had a boyfriend back in 1985 that looked like a twin to Jim Kerr. He had the same face. He also had a Scottish last name. It was the reason that I became a Simple Minds fan. 😂 Cheers from Canada ! 🇨🇦

Don't You Forget About Me was the song that first introduced me to Simple Minds in 1985. I thought they were a new band, and when Once Upon A Time came out, I was disappointed that Don't You wasn't on it. But I heard a couple songs on the radio up in Rhode Island from OUAT - Alive & Kicking, Sanctify Yourself. I decided to buy the cassette tape, and was blown away by the entire album. I went back to the record store a few weeks later, and noticed that Simple Minds had all these other albums. I decided to buy the weirdest looking one (to me) - Sons and Fascination. I remember hearing the opening track 'In Trance as Mission' and thinking how different it was from what was on OUAT. Then I realized that this band was something special. That was when they became my favorite band.

He is a great guy. Being a mad SM fan I strolled up to his house after finding out where he lived back in 1990 (long story) and rang his doorbell. He chatted to me and signed my Street Fighting Years book. He was a gent, I'll never forget it.
@BassByTheBay2 жыл бұрын
@@pameladiamond9603 Whoa, you _were_ mad! 😀 Closest I came to that was accompanying my friend to see U2 when we heard an interview on a radio station, and my friend suggested we go to the station (the concert was in SF as was the radio station). This was during the War tour, so U2 weren't yet superstars, and you could also do things like walk into radio stations, so we did. The receptionist was friendly, and we asked her if it'd be possible to meet Edge. She called someone and then sent us back to where the interview was taking place. We looked into the tinted glass and saw him chatting with the DJ. About 10 minutes later, he came walking out, and I can't lie... I was starstruck (was a _huge_ fan of the War album and of Edge's innovative guitar style). He was extremely polite and easy-going, but my friend did most of the talking since I was a bit verklempt. After we chatted a few minutes, his handler came out and interrupted us, sweeping Edge away, but Edge was kind enough to turn around and shake our hands and thank us. Just a really cool bloke. But going to someone's _house?!_ You win the "mad contest" 😄. Great that Jim didn't treat you like you were mad.
@pameladiamond96032 жыл бұрын
@@BassByTheBay Yeh he probably thought I was mad. Had my Simple Minds tea shirt on as well lol. Don't get me wrong I was bricking it, legs like jelly but I knew I would regret it if I didn't. My sister was with me and took a photo which I still have in a frame to this day. I visited their old recording studios when they had it at Lochearnhead in Perthshire but sadly no one was there. Did get a peek through the windows though. They sold this in the mid nineties and it's now a house. Great U2 story, had a couple of albums but wasn't that overly keen on them although I do think Bono has a great voice. I have loved Simple Minds since the early mid eighties and have seem them live in every decade apart from when they started in the late 70's as I was a little too young and hadn't discovered them yet. Being a Scot I am a bit biased but I have always thought they were so underrated as a band, their early stuff is pure genius.🎵🎵😀

@@pameladiamond9603 Yeah, I saw SM a few times, but just in the '80s. They sounded great -- loved their drummer! I absolutely wore out the Sparkle and NGD albums. "Up On The Catwalk" is still one of my all-time fave songs. Had a tape with the remix version and used to blast it in my car... with the windows down, of course. 😄

The very first tracks i heard: Waterfront 12" and on B-Side "Hunter and the Hunted live", wihich is an absolutely dramatic version. The one on the studio album is very soft and atmospharic. These pieces have accompanied my life. I still hear them today. Damn loud in the car. My buddy lent me the record back then. Yes, he discovered the band. I am still grateful to him for that.

Anyone else still sore that Don’t You wasn’t on the Once Upon a Time album?
@glenndouglas88223 жыл бұрын
Like Jim said, if they would have included it, the album would have sold millions more but the the band thought the song did not fit in with the essence of O.U.A.T and it's songs and themes. I totally agree with him. Hope that helped ,✌️

100% that the Broadcast date is June 1985. It was probably filmed a few weeks before broadcast. All my videotapes have a paper insert, on which I detail exactly what is on the tape, band name, tv show, date of broadcast and running time, I always did this. There was the odd occasion when I got a day wrong, but overall 99% of the detail I took at the time is accurate.
