031412 CANEY CREEK STUDENT KILLED IN FM 1485 FATAL CRASH

MARCH 14, 2012
Caney Creek Fire Department was dispatched just after 2 a.m. Wednesday morning to a reported major accident in the 12800 block of FM 1485. MCHD was first to arrive on the scene and found a 2002 Saturn that had struck a utility pole. The vehicle snapped off not one but two utility poles which were paired next to each other. In addition, the top of the pole snapped leaving 35,000 volts hanging overhead. Fire crews called for additional help from River Plantation Fire Department, Using three sets of tools it was a joint effort between firefighters, MCHD medics, deputies with the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office, and wrecker drivers to free the two teens from the twisted metal mass. After almost an hour, with the high voltage lines hanging just over their heads they were able to free the two and start medical care.
The male driver is Daniel Freund, 18-years-old. He was transported to Ben Taub Hospital in Houston in critical condition.
The female passenger has been identified as a 16-year-old Halie Mcdonald a Caney Creek High School student. . She was transported to Hermann Hospital in Houston in critical condition with a severe head injury, internal injuries, and broken bones. She was pronounced dead a short time later.
Due to fog at the time Air Medical Services were unavailable.
Troopers investigated the crash as Entergy workers stood by to start making repairs and restore service. DPS Troopers say they are not ruling out speed or alcohol as contributing to the crash. Early investigation shows the vehicle was southbound at a high rate of speed when it entered a curve. Running off the edge of the road the vehicle slid sideways into the pole.
The posted speed limit in the area is 50 m.p.h.
Warren Diepraam with the Montgomery County District Attorney’s Office Vehicular Crimes Unit is assisting in the investigation.

Nah, immediately after conviction he should be dragged to a room with a drain in the floor and executed. He has no defense he was caught at the scene of the crime so never a need for anything further than that. No need for appeals if you can't possibly be not guilty, nobody shoved him into the already crashed car he had to be cut out of it. No need to spend tax payer money on him further than a trial.

I learned to drive in a 1964 4 door Chevelle, drum brakes, manual steering. Kids today are learning to drive in cars that accelerate and brake so much better than older cars, then they get turned loose with no real experience except Drivers Ed, you are correct, many don't stand a chance.

With the summer come more accidents like this involving teen drivers. In a months time 4 will lay on my operating room table. Of those 4 between 2 - 3 will make a full recovery. Of those 2 - 3, 2 will recover but with life long disabilities. Teens, please slow down, you will get to your designation in one piece and better for it. No parent should have to bury their child... About 31 years ago, I was with a friend in my car outside a nightclub in the Uk. It was closing time and we were meant to meet these girls but they didn’t show. But I couldn’t help notice a guy, maybe 35/40 with a very much younger girl , turned out to be 18 heading towards his small van. I noticed because of the obvious age difference Literally a few minutes later, we had this call on the cb, (it was a while ago!). Saying a car had just smashed into a pole down the road. I drove there straight away and it had just happened. The van was upside down headfirst into a pole. I looked into the back and the guy was moaning real bad, but I got confused, he was in the passenger side before i realised it was upside down. I looked to the other side and the whole cell was just crushed so bad, you couldn’t tell there was a girl in there. Emergency arrived and I was kept back then. The guy was drunk, 12 years in prison, death by drunk driving. What a waste

Saw on my local news that law enforcement set up cones for high school students to try and drive a golf cart between while texting. Also had them wear “beer goggles” that simulate driving while impaired. The kids were knocking over cones, laughing , and joking around. If you want to make a real statement on the dangers of texting or being impaired while driving, show them videos like this!! Take that car and set it right in the middle of the high school parking lot for students to see everyday!! Driving a golf cart between cones ain’t gonna do anything to make teens think twice about texting or drinking and driving!! Seeing a mangled wreck of a car that looks nothing like a car anymore which caused the young teen to lose her life at 16 years old, just might get people to take a moment of pause every time they see that car, and show them that THIS is the reality of what happens every day in this country!!! RIP to the young lady who lost her life.

When you're that young you usually don't think rationally especially if you've had a few drinks...to think of all the times I drove at that age drunk, stoned or both hauling ass in my souped up Camaro-God was definitely watching out for me all those years ago

I hope the girls parents ask for the maximum penalty, in Washington state the parents or family could weigh in at sentencing and a friend of mine's family found themselves in that position they ask for mercy as the kids were friends the court gave mercy and the kid killed 2 young boys on bike's shortly after, that really did hit the family hard

As bad as this was and is, dropping off the car in front of the school and the faces of the kids at the school suffering trauma _ has to be one of the most insensitive things ever done. The police could have made their point without being so insensitive to the friends of the two killed and hurt in the accident. Traumatizing and entire school is highly insensitive and punishment for the police that did this would be most appropriate. I say this with a grain of salt as it is a sensitive and touchy subject. If doing this causes another student to have nightmares - then the police should be charged and/or sued..
