People need to remember YOU'RE NOT THE ONLY PERSON ON THE ROADS. Stay off your phones, stop texting and keep your eyes on the road at ALL times. Just a quick tip. My Mother told me this one time and it has stuck with me for decades. She said, "If you're late, rush at home, not on the road. Arrive alive." I've been driving for over 60 years and have never had a citation or even pulled over by law enforcement. Mind the laws of the road.

Very sad indeed! Not survivable for that poor lady looking at passenger compartment intrusion and steering wheel deformity. May she rest in peace.
@gosportjamie5 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately that's what happens when a passenger car goes up against something like a pickup truck which is body on chassis/frame construction. If that pickup had been monocoque/unitary construction the damage to the car would have been less as unitary vehicles are designed to collapse in specific ways in a crash, something called programmed deformation. Unfortunately, a body on chassis vehicle has soft bodywork mounted on a frame that, because of the kind of use the vehicle may receive, is rather stiff. The result that the frame penetrates a long way into the car, often above the level where the car has the most ability to disperse the impact. As you can see here, the frame of the truck penetrated the car right up to the bulkhead/firewall, pushing it back a long way into the passenger compartment. A further issue with body on frame vehicles is that the body doesn't have the structural strength built in that a unitary vehicle has as doing so would very much increase the unladen weight of the vehicle and reduce the payload making them ineffective for commercial use. The result of this is that when the body separates from its mountings to the frame in a severe accident then it collapses like a wet cardboard box and offers almost no protection to the occupants. That is a very large reason why cars stopped being built as body on chassis and changed to monocoque construction a long time ago...
@geoffbell1663 жыл бұрын
Its not so much the chassis its the weight disparity between vehicles its a 2.8tonne truck V 1.5 tonne car,and its a late model car with obvious safety features,but it dont mean jack in a high speed impact like that....

@poker_18rs925 жыл бұрын
Of course there are safer alternatives, it's called never leaving the house. Not everyone is going to go out and spend 70k for a truck or SUV. That Corolla is a safe vehicle for what it is. Fatal accidents are often determined by speed and point of impact. I've seen accidents like this where by the grace of god the driver manages to survive. I don't care what those 'safety ratings' say, that Corolla is a good vehicle and has all the latest safety airbags etc. But at some point you need to ask yourself "How safe is any vehicle when it's hit head-on by a bigger truck at 50+mph speeds?" I drive a Focus Hatchback, about the same size as that Corolla & the only thing I can do is drive responsibly and hope for the best, although we are all somewhat at the mercy of the drivers around us.

It would be interesting to see the missing left front wheel from the Ford. From the description of the collision this could well have been caused by a left front tyre blow out, something which very few non-professional drivers can recover from quickly enough to avoid a crash. With the Ford driver apparently being involved in some form of construction work it makes a blow out more likely as construction sites tend to be covered in items that can damage tyres and make tyre failure much more likely...
