Thank you for sharing. After seeing this video, I followed the method and it took me literally 5 minutes of cooking to make breakfast for the entire week. Five minutes, that's it. In the morning, you're not cooking, you're just heating it up in the microwave. You fill your bowl, microwave it (and continue getting ready for work while that's going), then voila, breakfast is served. It really doesn't get easier than this, and it's way healthy and tasty. You can put cinnamon, ground ginger, milks, dried fruits, fresh fruits (chop 'em up while the oatmeal is microwaving), nuts, seeds, etc. Super easy! :)

I agree with the 3to 1 liquid to oat ratio, never tried the toasting step. The texture is slightly chewy and superior to packets and you control the sweetness, i like raisins and brown sugar. Can make it on weekend and store in fridge

Dude! 3:1 water to oats bring to boil, let sit overnight, done. Yes, add salt and coconut oil and chia. After it cools, I add some my homemade kefir to lower phytate content. Don't skip the coconut oil to help keep the glycemic index down. I also eventually add walnuts and a soft boiled egg, nutritional yeast and a dash of tumeric powder, cinnamon and whole fat milk. LCGF is transformational, so easy on oats...

Hi Max, that's certainly an option! I've had good steel cut oats from a rice cooker before. This method works well for those who don't have a rice cooker, or are concerned about sticking around while the appliance is plugged in. Once you've brought it to a boil you can turn it off and let it sit.

Hi again. I see some readers asked about using milk instead of water. I often use 2 cups milk and 1 cup soymilk for 1 cup of oats to increase the protein. The results are fine. As you know, dairy milk will behave differently in cooking.

You need/should cook the raisins with a shake of cinnamon and maybe nutmeg (if you like nutmeg) and a wee bit of vanilla before you add the oats...the water is flavored with the raisin and spice water, and so will be the oats. Sometimes I chop up half an apple and I don't peel the apple, because of the vitamins; cook it with the raisin spice water mix. Sometimes I add some chopped nuts for a better chewy mouth texture with all of the above. I wouldn't want to eat any oatmeal that's been sitting in the ice box* for a week because it will have lost the vitamins that should go into our bodies. I've been making this oatmeal for about 70+ years. My mother made this during the depression, and it was served as a pudding for a desert. If you had a cow you could use the cream for whipping for something really special. Another thing you can do with Quaker Oats is to wiz it in the blender or food processor, and use the Oat flour as all or part as regular flour for pie crust or muffins. Over the years of my baking, I've included my homemade oat flour into my Oat Bread, and even as as gravy thickening agent...but don't use it as a roux, as it doesn't turn out as well as a plain flour, but will make do in a pinch. I use honey instead of white sugar. "*" = Refrigerator, for your edification.

I have discovered a great method - mix up the steel cut oats with whatever I want in them - raisins, sunflower & pumpkin seeds, teensy bit of chia seeds, cinnamon, salt, soy milk - mix in rice cooker on warm function & leave overnight. They are perfect next morning. Turn on rice cooker for few minutes to get hot - tho I’m happy with warm.

A revelation! Thank you, Scott. Except on Sundays, I had no time to cook steel cut oats in the morning. I had tried a slow cooker and a rice cooker and the results were inconsistent. I had tried the microwave and the cereal invariably boiled over, making an awful mess. This way, they are ready in the morning for a reheat ( on very low power) in the microwave while I'm in the shower. If I have company, I can make a huge pot of oats, have them reheating on low on the stovetop, and set up a buffet of dried fruits, warm milk, honey, etc. I get my oats from a mill about an hour away, so I keep a fairly large supply in sealed canisters. Thanks again.

Scott Klaum I was wondering can you add chopped up apples of bananas to the jars ahead of time? or does the fruit brown and get yucky?
@ScottKlaum9 жыл бұрын
skayeflower Great question...I haven't tried, since I usually add fruit right before eating. Partly because I would expect that apples and bananas in particular would get brown and yucky, like you said. Only way to find out is to try! Let us know if you give it a shot. Sometimes if I cut apples and need them to keep for a bit I mix them in with a little fresh lemon juice which keeps them from browning as quickly, but I don't believe that would be enough in this situation.

I love your flax seed idea, TheTempacct! I use them in salads and ground in homemade energy/protein bars. Walnuts would be a great addition as well. I hear you, about the microwave -- I generally avoid using mine as well whenever possible. Oven or stove top. Unfortunately those aren't always available so it depends on how much one wants the food hot! Let me know how the toasting works out for you.

I haven't tried, so I don't speak from experience on this -- but I wonder if the oats would keep as long in the fridge if you used milk instead of water. The only true test is to try! If you do, let us know how it works out!
@ScottKlaum11 жыл бұрын
Great question, RandomKoitsu11, I actually haven't tried that but my gut reaction is that it might not hold up as well, as you suggest. I generally add the milk right before reheating. I've considered soaking the oats with milk and spices and fruit overnight (no cooking) to create muesli. But I haven't cooked it with milk in place of water. If you give it a try, let me know how it works out!
@alexnadon69995 жыл бұрын
The issue I have is that his info is a bit off. Old Fashioned Rolled Oats are not the same as quick or instant oats. Rolled Oats still take at least 8 to 10 mins to cook on the stove. And contain almost the same amount of nutritional value as steel cut. Now of course steel cut oats bring your blood sugar down faster. But if that's not a big deal. Then who cares. I prefer rolled oats over steel cut. But avoid the instant oats. Also quick cooking oats are not the same as instant oats. And rolled oats are not the same as instant. Just to clarify the differences.

Hi John, thanks for the question. Personally, I avoid processed spreads like that because of additives (e.g. for color, preservatives etc), and the questionable quality/source of ingredients (e.g. GMO vegetable oils).

One step missing: soak oats with water and lemon juice or vinegar overnight to neutralize anti nutrients and phytic acid present in oats. Otherwise is less digestive and the anti nutrients don’t let your body absorb other minerals and nutrients in your food.

I cook my oats alot different. First I would use a decaf tea like apple Cinnamon in place of the water, then I would use something similar to a crystal light packet. Liquid first then the oats. crunch up some Cinnamon sticks and put them into a salt or pepper hand grinder for topping, Artificial Sweetener if desired.
