Musician Stevie Ray Vaughn was born on October 3, 1954, in Dallas, Texas. Vaughan was at the forefront of a blues resurgence in the 1980s, bringing rock fans into the fold with a powerful, driving style of play that earned him comparisons with some of his heroes such as Jimi Hendrix, Otis Rush and Muddy Waters. His four main studio albums were critical and commercial successes, rising high on the music charts and paving the way to sold-out stadium shows across the country.
Inspired by his older brother Jimmie's guitar playing, Stevie picked up his first guitar at the age of 10, a plastic Sears toy that he loved to strum. With an exceptional ear, (Stevie never learned to read sheet music) Stevie taught himself to play the blues by the time he'd reached high school, testing his stage skills at a Dallas club any chance he could. Well into his junior year, Vaughan had already played with several garage bands. But lacking any kind of academic drive, Stevie struggled to stay in school. Following a brief enrollment at an alternative arts program sponsored by Southern Methodist University, Stevie dropped out of school, moved to Austin and concentrated on making a living as a musician. To make ends meet, Vaughan collected soda and beer bottles for money and couch-surfed at various friends' houses. The rest of the time he was playing music, jumping in-and-out of various bands that had semi-regular gigs in the Austin area.
In 1975, Vaughan and a few others formed Triple Threat. After some reshuffling, the group was renamed Double Trouble, inspired by an Otis Rush song. With Vaughan on lead vocals, the group developed a strong fan base throughout Texas. Eventually their popularity spread outside the Lone Star State. In 1982, the group caught the attention of Mick Jagger, who invited them to play at a private party in New York City. That same year, Double Trouble performed at the Montreux Blues & Jazz Festival in Switzerland. While there, Vaughan's musical abilities caught the attention of David Bowie, who asked the musician to play on his upcoming album, Let's Dance.
With some commercial viability behind them, Vaughan and his bandmates were signed to a record deal with Epic, where they were put in the capable hands of legendary musician and producer, John Hammond, Sr. The resulting record, Texas Flood, did not disappoint, reaching No. 38 on the charts and catching the notice of rock stations across the country. For his part, Stevie was voted Best New Talent and Best Electric Blues Guitarist in a 1983 reader's poll by Guitar Player Magazine. Double Trouble set off on a successful tour, and then recorded a second album, Couldn't Stand the Weather, which climbed to No. 31 on the charts and went gold in 1985.
More records (the live album, Live Alive and then another studio collection, Soul to Soul) and more success followed. There were Grammy nominations and, in 1984, the unprecedented recognition of Vaughan by the National Blues Foundation Awards, which named him Entertainer of the Year and Blues Instrumentalist of the Year. He became the first white musician ever to receive both honors.
But Vaughan's personal life was spiraling downward. His relationship with his wife, Lenora Darlene Bailey, whom he'd married in 1979, fell apart. He battled drug and alcohol problems. Finally, following a collapse while on tour in Europe in 1986, the guitarist checked himself into rehab.
For the next year, Vaughan largely stayed away from the high-powered music scene that had dominated his life over the last half decade. But in 1988, he and Double Trouble started performing again and making plans for another album. In June 1989, the group released their fourth studio album, In Step. The recording featured Vaughan's driving guitar style, as well as several songs such as "Wall of Denial" and "Tight Rope," which touched on the struggles he'd gone through in his personal life. The release reached No. 33 on the charts, and garnered the group a Grammy for Best Contemporary Blues Recording.
On August 26, 1990, Vaughan and Double Trouble played a big show in East Troy, Wisconsin, that featured Eric Clapton, Buddy Guy, Robert Cray and Jimmie Vaughan. Just after midnight, Stevie hopped on a helicopter bound for Chicago. Contending with dense fog, the helicopter crashed into a hilly field just minutes after take-off, killing everyone on board. Vaughan was buried at Laurel Land Memorial Park in South Dallas. More than 1,500 people attended the musician's memorial service.
In the years since, Stevie Ray Vaughan's legend has only grown. Just a little more than a year after his death, Vaughan was recognized by Texas governor Ann Richards, who proclaimed October 3, 1991, "Stevie Ray Vaughan Day."

My drummer found out after a lot of years that SRV's bass player, Tommy Shannon, is his father! Tommy came to San Diego one weekend and showed up at one of our gigs. Being a bass player myself and also being from Texas, I had to get his auto graph on my bass. Talked with him for a long time, and will always remember that night. RIP & God Bless Stevie...

Thank you so very much for the tour of his grave, and the crash site. One of my favorite songs of his was also Tightrope. I had no idea that he had real struggles with alcohol and drug addiction, until last night, I watched a documentary on Prime. Now the song is even more adored because of it's true meaning. Honeybee, Look At Little Sister, along with his entire music library, are all timeless. The man KNEW how to ROCK those Blues. Rest In Peace, Master of Shredding.

You are right. He played on 13's. His fingers were so calloused and black. He said that one of the callouses fell off while playing and he had a hole in his finger so that's how thick the callouses were. Pretty amazing.

Scott, I am so touched by your thoughtfulness. I had never seen a picture of Stevie Ray's resting place. I can't thank you enough for thinking of me and I will never forget it. It reminds me of why I was drawn to your videos in the first place. You do your homework, your quick wit is a delight and it makes for an interesting video even if it is someone I'm not so familiar with, you make it interesting. I'm so glad to see your subscribers count going up and I believe that will continue to be the case with all the quality videos you offer. "Life Without You" (the quote on his stone is from that song I love the song & it is special because he takes his time toward the end of the song to talk to the audience about how we need to help each other through our ups and downs and to lend a hand to a brother or sister in need. He would end it by asking "So are you with me on that?" He was eight years old when he started playing his brother Jimmy's guitar. His brother would always tell him to leave the guitar alone and as soon as the coast was clear, he started learning his craft He wasn't supposed to be on that helicopter. One of Eric Clapton's people had way too much stuff to haul and it made the load too heavy so he was out and Stevie, being anxious to get to Chicago and then to NY to his beautiful fiancee, he grabbed the seat to arrive early. This was the happiest time in Stevie's life after achieving sobriety and his beautiful fiancee. I remember that day all too well. I hope this video gets a lot of SRV viewers to become subscribers. Thank you so much for this video at SRV's gravesite - Born and raised here in Dallas as Stevie was, and I FINALLY rode out to his gravesite this year - I know he isn't there only his body but to be that close to him and his family was truly a bucket list moment - They say Hendrix was the greatest...well along with millions others, we say Hendrix was an innovator....and SRV was the Master - Just listen to Hendrix's Voodoo Chile and Stevie's VooDoo Chile - No comparison...Keep up the great work Sir.

Stevie played w many well known musicians..B.B. King was just one, I remember hearing of his passing on the hwy w my kids in the car,who all play guitar, we cryed & cryed & cryed. My kids were 4, 6, 8 & 10..I know exactally where we were on the hwy when we heard. I had every CD that Stevie had out, had a huge stero w 4ft speakers (4) ,and would blast stevie's music in the morning to wake em up for school..gifted,awesome musician, that my boys & I love deeply to this day. They're now 34, 36, 38, 40 & when they know they've made me mad,they'll go get their guitar & bust out a Stevie Ray Vaughan toon, they always know I cant stay mad at em after that & we always bust up laughing

Oh wow, Scott, thank you for this.💜 I’ve been a huge fan of Stevie’s for several decades now - love his music - but more than that I adore the beautiful, passionate human being that he was. I found it very appropriate that the trinket on his grave when you visited said “Love”, if I could sum up Stevie in one word that would be it. He was all heart - in his music, in the way he conducted himself in life, in the way he treated people. I’ve never heard anyone say anything bad about him, he’s always spoken about with utter respect. And he earned it. I believe his addictions came about in an effort to cover up some mental pain he needed to overcome from his childhood. And he did just that, he overcame that pain & also his addictions, powerfully. I’m glad he & his brother Jimmie, who he loved dearly, were able to record their album ‘Family Style’ before he passed. So grateful to know that when he left us he was clean, at his most successful in his career, happy in a loving relationship, spending time on tour with his brother & other musicians that he loved & respected. Again, thank you for this, it’s very touching - & thank you also to Verna, for requesting this coverage of Stevie. It’s beautifully done.

I got to see him in Australia in 85 i think it was. It was incredible! I think he was leaving a gig in Aspen, Eric Clapton, Buddy guy and a few others were on the agenda. Eric Clapton offered SRV his seat on the chopper and said he would wait for the next one. Live at the El Macombo is a great concert as well as Austin city limits. Riviera paradise would be one of my most loved SRV tunes. I heard the news of his passing in 1990 as I was getting ready for work and we were devastated. Thanks Scott this was great!

Hi Scott. I remember that horrible night, I live about 15 miles from the crash site. I did not go to that concert, because I did not know Stevie Ray Vaughan at that time. I found out about it the next morning, it was all over the news. Very sad. One of my friend from work said he was at that concert that night and heard about the crash as he told me the next morning. I could not believe it. We talked about it all day. It was a very sad day for both of us, and I didn't even know the band. The place that it happened is called Alpine Valley in Walworth county. They have a marker on the ski hill where it all took place. I would like to do a video on it but i'm not that good at explaining things like they really need to be told. If you ever come to Wisconsin, look me up and I will take you to the crash site. I just have a tiny channel of 2000 subs is all. My videos only gets 100 views in a two or three week period of time. I don't have a brand for my channel. I found out after being with KZbin for 9 years I never had a brand name. I can only use two names on my channel. I tried to rename my channel to James Sween Adventures, and nine years ago I thought i did the right thing by calling my cannel by my real name. So now with this virus hitting, I'm just stopping. All my videos are out side. I most of the time show visiting Wisconsin and some other things on learning videos. I just started watching your channel. I can't stop watching. I must have seen 60 videos of yours in the last week. You are so nice. I like the way you talk. You tell it on the fly just like I do, and sometimes it is hard to get the words out. I do it all the time. I suck at it, but my followers seem to like me. I don't have trolls so far. But I don't get many views like you do. But keep up the fine job your doing. I really enjoy watching. Awesome Stuff Bro! SRV is Forever! Tightrope and Texas Flood are my Favorites. So it was cool to know Tightrope was one of yours 🤘🤘 It's kind of cool how I truly found Stevie Ray Vaughan's Music. A good Friend of mine gave me a stack of random CDs and, of course, I went thru finding new music and stuff that I currently listened to as well but I came across a SRV Double Trouble Greatest Hits CD. I knew Pride and Joy and heard it a few times growing up but i had never really ventured into SRVs Music. Well I was blown away and quickly started finding all I could on this Genius. Thanks for doing one on Stevie. Just like so many others, he was my hero as well. The reason I love the blues, and play guitar to this day. He was my first concert, Greg Allman opened for him at the Mann Music center in Philly, 6-20-1987. Somehow, my dad actually found the audio so I have the show, which is amazing. So grateful to have experienced him! Wish he was still here, but I guess we can't be greedy. I always like to think, with the way it happened, one second he was in the helicopter, the next he was sitting back next to Albert King, with that big happy grin on his face, playing the blues...

Was lucky enough to see SRV twice. The second time his brother opened up for him and they played together on stage. I was at the Checkerboard Lounge in Chicago on that Monday night as SRV, Eric Clapton and Robert Cray were all going to go after the Alpine Valley Show. At the club just told us that they show is not going to happen due to an accident. They did not say what happened exactly, Then at work on the radio we heard what happened. Sad day for sure. Just finished visiting Stevie's first and only wife, Lenora, "Lenny" Bailey - Vaughan's obituary, written up by her daughter from two years ago... of her passing Summer of 2018... That was a difficult read, but I'd like to think they all are in peace & together... Stevie Ray left a lot of friends behind and lately they have been passing, one by one... It's heartbreaking. Thank you Scott for finally doing a piece on STEVIE RAY. I was a huge metal fan and a big time lover of the drums. My cousin called me back in 1990 and said he had an extra ticket to see this incredible guitar player that's touring with Jeff Beck, and that he was a blues player but also did Hendrix covers. I was like, sure cuz, I'll ask my wife when she gets back. Well needless to say she wasn't going to let me come to the show and the rest is history.. But about a few months later, my cousin (he's like my brother, that's how close we are) calls me and says hey Doug you just have to come over and watch this new dvd I got of Stevie Ray Vaughan, and I still didn't really know much of him, BUT when the DVD started it was a live show in a small club in Canada and the first songs started I instantly was floored. Awe-struck and amazed! From that night forward I had forgotten about the drums and was out in music stores looking for guitars. And have been playing guitar ever since.. I don't wanna bore you with more, I just wanted to express my gratitude for your video and time you took to do this one. I absolutely love his song little wing, it was a song from Jimi Hendrix. His crash happened at alpine valley in upper Wisconsin. Its a ski resort in winter and a concert venue in summer. I saw new kids on the block in 1990 before he crashed

Another great video Scott! I took guitar lessons in my junior year of high school because I loved watching Stevie Ray Vaughan play and listening to his music. I remember the day he died I was on a trip with my dad and we were in shock when we heard on the radio about the crash. Stay safe sweetie! Love to you and Shady baby. 🐶💙

Scott! I was looking up famous graves in Dallas area for more travel vlog ideas and found a few. First two I found were dimebag and Stevie ray vaughn. Of course you had videos of them both haha. 30mins from where I live now. I plan on making a trip soon to do some of these videos. Other famous graves I found in DFW metro were Mickey Mantel, Lee Harvey Oswald, and Amber Rene Hagerman who was the original Amber alert child who went missing. Crazy stuff. Thanks for these cool videos!
