Sad that they didn’t think 10000 people meant enough to be reinterred properly. Just because many had been gone a long time doesn’t mean they shouldn’t be treated with as much dignity and respect as someone recently departed.

Unfortunately, this is how a lot of people are treated after death. Once a generation or 2 has passed, you are forgotten and the old cemetery is paved over for a shopping center or housing development.

Sadly forgotten. I thinks its said after 3 or 4 generations you're forgotten and I believe it. Most young people dont think about their heritage these days...no families or friends left to visit, May these folks rest at ease and peace no matter where they're buried. Im sure they are.

Scott on tape, a fun fact...the Birmingham Zoo is built over a pauper cemetery. 4700+ people are still buried underneath the zoo. There have been only a few of the graves relocated. maybe a good story for later. Mostly unknown to the locals, but much info on the net.

My entire family has had to be cremated, here it is the only real option for the most part. That said, it is so sad when you don't have a place to go and visit with family who are gone. My only person in a grave is in Normandy, in a war grave, all alone and unvisited for 80 years... Fingers crossed I can pay Bert a visit some time soon.

So many cemeteries have been disturbed by road expansions. Also lots of cemeteries are paved over. On the edge of downtown clearwater a lost segregation era cemetery was discovered with most of the bodies left behind. Many are under the road still and a some underneath a large building. Ground penetrating radar has found a bunch of lost black cemeteries in the last few years in and around the Tampa bay area.

I rented a home that was build on a cemetery that was supposed to have been relocated. I lasted 3 months was a nightmare of paranormal activity. I will not say were but in a US State that claims if the cemetery is left alone essentially for 100 years it is, basically free game to do as one wishes. I had ZERO knowledge of any of this prior to living there. There are still homes there and sadly was a beautiful home but not a resting place for sure. Sad that is allowed by greedy contractors, to essentially "relocate" remains into a mass grave and call it good.

The same thing happened here in Colorado at cheeseman park and Denver botanic gardens, the park and the botanic gardens are right next to each other that was all part of the cemetery. The bodies are still there today. They left most of the bodies and removed headstones to make a park with a playground etc, and they made the botanical gardens out of the rest of the cemetery. The white pavilion where funerals were held however still stands at cheeseman park. Very interesting place.

Here in Tucson Arizona there’s a neighborhood built on top of the old Court Street Cemetery. They moved the stones but not the graves. There’s stories about people digging to fix sewer lines and holes for mailboxes and digging up bones. And people live in this neighborhood knowing this like it’s no big deal. I believe there’s even a church on that land, or right on the edge of it. I think the cemetery was from 1880’s to like 1906. I’m pretty sure I’ve heard there’s others in town but I’ve never researched it.

Almost the same thing happened here in Ohio. The government made Alum Creek Dam and lake. The army Corp of engineers had to move headstones . In the 1800s caskets were made of wood. They didn't have preserving techniques like they have today. Caskets fall apart, and bones collapse. So they leave the bodies. It is awful. But it's cheaper as they were over budget. We went swimming in the lake and a baby skull bobbed up where my daughter was swimming. The water washed away the graveyard. The Corp went back to see what they could do.❤

This is very common in Florida. Apparently, we have no laws stating that developers have to relocate a Cemetery. A lot of times, I'll go to find a particular location & end up finding orange groves OR housing developments. We've recently had a number of African American Cemeteries located under business parking lots. 3 made the news because they were under our baseball stadium, a housing project & a major business named FrankCrum. There are currently no plans in place as to how they are going to move forward.

In my former town there was a very small fenced area with a couple of graves in it that was right next to the off ramp of a major road. Most likely a farm at one point with a family plot but overtaken by the thruway. Every Christmas someone placed a wreath on the fence of the burial plot. I always wanted to stop and take a look but it’s not easy to get to it from the road, probably not too safe either. At least they left them alone but it’s certainly not a peaceful place to visit if family is still around.

When there was a big flood in "93"...the water got so high that the cemetery in Hardin Missouri was under at least 8 feet of water. Coffins were popping up and floating into other towns. They found bodies without coffins and coffins without names. When it was all said and done...they had a mass burial in that same cemetery. There's a headstone there telling about.
