It never even occurred to me that when an actor has dirt shoveled at them, it has to be edible dirt.

I honestly thought they were just so committed to the scene that they would get real dirt and then when the director said cut they would swish their mouths out between takes.

In culinary school as a big project I made radishes in "edible dirt" that was made from a mixture of roasted barley, malt flour and melted butter. It was a decade ago though so I don't remember the exact recipe. Took inspiration from a recipe found in the NOMA book. It was really tasty

One of my informal hobbies is using one type of food to mock up a different kind of food. Think, rice crispy squares meets roast turkey (I'm now required to bring this to the Thanksgiving family get togethers). From here it"s a short walk to creating edible mock-inedibles.

@@sarahluciakarmann6133 for rice crispy treat roast turkey, I make the rice crispy treats like usual with butter and marshmallows, but I use cocoa pebbles for the dark meat and regular rice crispies for the white meat. Then I sculpt everything into the shape of a turkey, using bamboo skewers for any bony parts. I cover it all in philo dough, do an egg wash, give it a quick brown under the broiler (I've used a propane torch too, to avoid overheating the turkey and melting it, but the browning isn't as even) and it's ready to go. Sometimes I stuff the turkey with mini marshmallows, shredded coconut and almond slices (goes in before the philo wrap). It looks 80% like a real turkey if you're standing across the room from it.

That was absoilutely fascinating! You mentioned that the actor didn't have a problem with eating beef, allowing for the mulchy texture to be made of jerky; it got me thinking. I've got this disease called celiac, where I absolutely can not have gluten (which is in all those cookies). What would happen if an actor who needed to eat dirt had celiac or a gluten allergy? Would the dirt be made of gluten free versions of everything, or an entirely different dirt recipe made, or a stunt double used? I'd love to know. Thanks for making these videos, Scott!

Once you learn the truth it's often hard to unsee it, but that's okay. It's some trivia to throw out when watching tv. "You hear that paper bag? yeah that's a prop." "That paper bag? haha of course it's real.." Is it too late to become a prop master?
