I'm a big comic reader and there's a joke tagline to the comics industry many people know, "Comics: Dying since 1939." Everyone always claims media isn't what it used to be when their nostalgia at how they remember enjoying games overrides the objective centers of their brains for thinking about how a game feels now. When you've just played a game, you remember what you think, and odds are a lot of your thoughts were, 'this was great, but ____' or "I wish this was ______", meanwhile in 20 years you won't remember what you thought, just how you felt, and most games, regardless of how good they actually are, provide at least some amount of fun. So in 20 years, you'll remember that fun but not all your nitpicks, and for the new games you're playing you'll focus on your thoughts and not your feelings
@DerrickWilson-fm7vcСағат бұрын
I mean, this is true in the sense that people will always look at the past more fondly. But it’s also true that more games are released in a buggier state than ever before. Add in micro transactions, gacha mechanics, and I think it’s reasonable to say the industry used to be in a better state Games haven’t gotten worse, but the divide between good games and bad games have. And many AAA games fall into the bad games camp now, making that divide feel stronger

You can track the way Nintendo experiments with their products and the way they go about that by remembering who’s leading the charge. My theory was always that Nintendo was developing the Wii successor when the original iPad came out. They saw a lot of their casual audience going to mobile so they felt they needed to incorporate some type of tablet and touch screen tech with their console. They just never had a clear vision for the console or who they were talking to once it was clear the Wii crowd wasn't coming back. The Switch being such a huge success is such an amazing comeback .They clearly knew what they had with the Switch and how to sell it.

I've always liked the WiiU, but I wouldn't say it is underrated. Its first party games were pretty good, but the console isn't as good as most of what Nintendo released prior to it, and the 3rd party support just wasn't there. As shitty as the modern gaming era is outside of Nintendo, the Switch is 100% better than last gen's Nintendo system. I'd say every Nintendo system is better than it except for the Virtual Boy, and NES, although I can definitely see why someone would like the NES more. "The WiiU was Nintendo at their creative height" is something someone who has never heard of a GameCube would say. Yeah, Mario Maker and Splatoon are creative and great, but I'd argue Mario Maker isn't even that creative of an idea, though, because I used a website almost 20 years ago that would allow you to create and share Mario stages with others on the site (it was not made by Nintendo btw). It was essentially a smaller Mario Maker on a web browser. Those "Hold Right" stages people made in Mario Maker were even made by people way back then, too. Fans literally laid the groundwork for Mario Maker 20 years ago.

The Wii U era was the first time I was constantly keeping up with news and new releases. Lemme tell you, it was a STRUGGLE half the time. I'm pretty sure Xenoblade X carried the last two years of the Wii U for me; there wasn't a single game released after that which interested me, and by this point I'd already finished the games I bought previously. Splatoon and Xenoblade X made up most of my Wii U play time simply because nothing was coming out, and especially later in the console's life, what WAS coming out wasn't exactly great. Scott mentioned in one of the Wii U videos that there was a sort of camaraderie between Wii U owners, which WAS kinda fun, but we only had that because practically everyone was playing the same games due to how little actually released on the system 💀 The system was clunky, slow, didn't have basic features around at the time on other consoles, didn't know what to do with its gimmick, and had almost no support from devs that weren't Nintendo. Menus with "personality" don't make up for not having any games! Nintendo practically submitted to their failure after 2015!!

I feel like it depends on your perspective. With respect to modding potential, it is far and away the best Nintendo product, no comparison necessary or even feasible. I'm not the kind of person to spend hundreds of dollars on the latest games except for a few rare instances, so experiencing decades of Nintendo's legacy content for free is absolutely perfect for me. And something must be said for the general aesthetic surrounding the system. I find the menu UI and music gorgeous. The frutiger aero style they were going for in the early years of the Wii U's life was also reflected in many games, which I would take every day over the bland, lifeless, minimalistic, corporate vibes the Switch gives off. Additionally, Miiverse was a wonderful step forward for Nintendo's online infrastructure. Maybe it wasn't perfect, but at the very least it was entertaining and fun, and I'm glad that I can experience it to this day with an even more passionate fanbase on Pretendo. I also think the Wii U's failure and obsolescence is partly why I enjoy it so much, with the knowledge that I'm part of a very obscure, devoted install base of like-minded users sharing many of the same rare experiences. Viva la Wii U

As pointed out in the series, a lot of the era was waiting for things to come out. Even some of its best years (2014 for example) barely can outclass even some mid-tier years of the Switch. Same reason why most complaints of WiiU ports (besides price) I feel are fairly pointless. The Switch’s Install base is almost twelve times bigger. I never played games like Xenoblade X or 3D World before, and many others haven’t either.

I was 10 during the Wii U generation. While I do have a personal bias, I'm not above acknowledging the Wii U's problems and how it wasn't particularly a good era for Nintendo or fans. Still, I can't help but feel exhausted by how the conversation surrounding the Wii U has rather stagnant and repetitive. People are free to feel how they want, but I feel that the Wii U has been critcized enough at this point. This March will be 7 years since the Switch launched and this month in particular will be 7 years since the Wii U ceased production globally. It's also been 11 years in total since the Wii U launched. Were fairly removed from that era of Nintendo, and I think we should all try to collectivley shake up the discussion. Instead of always trying to highlight the Wii U's various blunders, why not highlight its strengths? People have valid reasons to like this console or even prefer certain aspects of it compared to the Switch. Opinions aren't always black and white. I recognize that stuff like menu music or "charming menus" aren't the end all be all for someone's enjoyment of a console. The games are what I and most are here for, but I don't think there's any harm in wanting something like that return that made part of the Wii U so special for a lot of people, even if it's insignificant in the grand scheme of its history.

It was easier to wave away their flaws when they weren’t a 150 million installbase, multi billion dollar film making, theme park owning financial juggernaut. A company with that many resources, some of the best employees in the business and every customer and developer clamoring to them should be able to have an eshop that works, functional netcode and games with stable framerates.

I love the WiiU. I had it when I was alone in my first apartment. When I moved into my first house with my wife I played Color Splash on the gamepad while she watched TV or whatever. I love that thing.

No. Rightfully rated. There wasn’t anything it was better than at the time not even the portable handheld which was kicking it to the curb .

It’s still the worst home console that Nintendo put out unless you include the color tv game but that doesn’t count because it only played 1 game

I loved the Wii U generation growing up. My favorite part was playing Smash 4 and then almost exclusively playing retro games and 3DS games until the Switch came out.

It's underrated in that people see it as a 5/10 and it's actually a 6/10

Thumbs up for sticking to your guns. The Wii U was a disappointing time to be a fanboy. I still have mine, but haven't played anything in a long time.

I've always been a huge Nintendo fan back since the SNES era, when everyone was buying their PS1 and 2's (the games were way cheaper here in Brazil due to bootlegs and piracy) I remained faithful with my N64 and NGC. When the Wii was released I was already an adult and could buy way more games than I ever could before, had so much fun with it and the DS/3DS. Zelda and Mario will always be some of my favorite series! During the Wii U era I bought a PS4.

I really loved the Wii U, Nintendo Land utilized the game pad really well … but to say that the Wii U era was better than the Switch era… you gotta be nuts 🥜

I was a teen in the Wii U years as well and you hit the nail on the head on every point of the experience. Appreciate that a big Nintendo youtuber is finally calling out the revisionism on Virtual Console and overhyped first party games. Thanks for telling it like it is. Only thing is you didn't talk about how incredible Xenoblade Chronicles X was. I know you're not an RPG guy but that game is up there with Splatoon and Mario Maker for ambition and quality imo. It's effectively a prototype for Breath of the Wild (which Monolith also co-developed) as a lot of its elements were carried over. No Xenoblade X, no Breath of the Wild frankly. Glad its out of Wii U purgatory.

2014 was the only time I wish I got a wiiU. Now, I do have the system and softmodded it. It was nice to be able to to play xenoblade X and even Color Splash but now that I got an amazing PC, i think, " Maybe I could just emulate it all instead of looking at crusty 720p visual on my 4k tv".

Yeah, I'd definitely take 2010-2012 era waggle over the Wii U. Massive eye roll.

i dont think so, the games were really good but they didnt use the gimmick of the system that well, so it failing by being an underpowered system with no significant gimmick doomed it from the start, the switch is everything the wiiu wanted to be and much more fleshed out

The Wii Us games were good but the hardware wasn't, beyond software not using the gamepad, the cpu was a bottle neck and everything loaded super slowly - especially in the operating system. Software sells systems, yes, but that statement assumes the hardware is decent lol

It's very easy to look back on past consoles with rose-tinted glasses and ignore all the other frustrating elements. The first ever HD Mario being a New Soup game was severely underwhelming. Developers left and right pulling out didn't help the console's library. The GamePad was frustrating to use and wasn't used nearly enough within games to justify it being the way it is. There are definitely gems, no doubt, but at this point Nintendo has charged full-price for Switch ports for almost all the games which mattered. And trust me, everyone complained about the Wii U when it was the relevant Nintendo console. It's just easy to ignore all that and focus on just the best games. The same will happen to the Switch in a few years, even though I do think it is one of Nintendo's best.

The only thing I slightly disagree with is I think the Virtual Console was slightly better still on Wii U, but I've always been very big on owning my games rather than paying a subscription. I do think it had a better variety of games I was personally interested in as well, but that's also a bit of a personal take on it.
@staringcorgi64753 сағат бұрын
The virtual was horrible on Wii U it’s a downgrade compared to the wii since the input lag was bad and atrocious but it’s most noticeable in the n64 games and along with the darker filter which is a stupid way to prevent seizures like why not have a seizure warning
@massdefection3 сағат бұрын
@staringcorgi6475 I did say it was mostly due to my personal preferences on owning vs subscription and the variety being more my style on the Wii U catalog. I don't even like most N64 games.
@staringcorgi64752 сағат бұрын
@@massdefection i think Nintendo still should’ve not fucked up the n64 because it’s one of their most important consoles and they got it right on the wii
@AwesomeMooseSmile2 сағат бұрын
@@staringcorgi6475i mean to be fair, as bad as the virtual console for Nintendo 64 was on the Wii U, on the switch it's even worse because not only is it just as bad, but also you have to pay a bigger subscription for it.

I loved a lot of games and things about the WiiU but the one thing I use EVERY DAY is the WiiU stand. I can fit my phone perfectly on it's side and have it sit on top of a desk, table or even a pillow on my chest in my bed. It's by far the single most frequently used piece of a Nintendo product I own to this day.

I wasn’t that into the Wii U or 3DS during their lifespan but I’ve had lots of fun with these consoles after modding them. Being able to play Wii and GameCube games natively over HDMI on the Wii U is icing on the cake.
