@@JGr2000 actually Sony is the only one doing the backwards compatibility right now. And all games have ai uprender, save, load rewind functionality. This month we got legacy of kain blood omen 1 and 2. Dino crisis, etc. get 2 or 3 every month.

It probably never truly will for series X, least not in the way we’re used to. At this point that machine is just a cheap PC alternative. Which I do get some use out of, especially since CFB25 isn’t on PC. Mannn the best point Scott makes here is the fact that companies are so adverse to just making a simple good game. No bullshit, no profit-chasing live service tactics, just a good game. I think the entire movie industry is dealing with this issue right now too... Movies are just rehashes of older ideas because everyone is too scared to either make something simple or fun, or try a new idea. I also love that indies have been getting more of a spotlight than ever, but there is still a part of me that misses that AA/mid-sized studio that we used to see a lot back in the day.

There’s a place with live service games or just games that focus strictly on multiplayer, but yeah I agree. Sony isn’t the only entity at blame, but it’s been so blatant that they’re chasing a profit instead of making a good game. “Games are complicated to make” has been a lot of the mindset which I’m not disagreeing, but uhhh they’ve made good games in the past, they can keep doing it. Even if that means retreading territory and design ideas, there could be fresh takes on what worked. RE4R was the try and true formula in that regard. That game for me sums up to “I’m here for a good time.”

Personally I hope they hold off on releasing a next gen console like a PS6, because I think console's life span needs to be longer, the usual 7 years is not going to cut it anymore. Yeah I don’t think Xbox has given up. I agree with what everyone is saying that Xbox is trying to do, but I think they’re mistaking it for surrender. I think they’re just aiming to make it where Xbox is a service to make gaming accessible to everyone on a variety of platforms, and they just advertise Xbox consoles as the flagship way to play those games. I personally like the idea, and I’m not doodooing in my pants because some people on another platform get to play Halo or something. I like the idea, it feels innovative how you can play your Xbox games on your phone by streaming it, or if you don’t want the console, you can just get a fire stick or something. Are these really the most optimal ways to play? Not really. But I do find new tech innovations and ideas to be interesting, especially the way Xbox is expanding. I think the biggest issue is they just don’t have a lot of really groundbreaking first party games. Which I don’t care too much for, but it would be really great if they would just make a game that was decent for once in a while. I also like how Nintendo is doing its own thing as well which is just being the console for casuals or people who want to play with their friends and family. I like how games like Legend of Zelda and Mario are family friendly, but they still target everybody. Mainly the Mario in anyway, being advertised as a split screen game everybody plays at a party or something. And PlayStation is focused on story based games and such.

Hi-Fi Rush showed what is wrong with games right now by being an example of what could be right. It is a smaller game that looks great, plays well and appeals to a niche audience that was likely developed on a relatively smaller budget. It probably took 2 years to do from start to finish. That is great. And no, it isn't gonna be a 10 millio copy seller. It wasn't meant to be. And there we go. Other games are meant to be the 10 million+ copy sellers. So they pump 5 or more years into making them. They get the $400M budget's. And at that point... they are so expensive and such a time sink they are HAVE to succeed. And so they get focus grouped into utter blandness. And sure, they can be fun - but they are iterative on what is out there and not a leap in games. So we end up with a general feeling of "Yeah, it's okay but kinda boring." It's kinda like movies. Back in the 80's and even 90's there were loads of movies out there. All were medium budgets and so they just pumped them out and some were good and some were bad but they were able to just throw a lot out there to see what stuck. But by the 2000's every movie had to start being a $1B box office juggernaut and so releases dwindled to a tenth of what they were. And the ones coming out became expensive to make and so were made by committee. And sure - some are fun but nobody can claim that the feeling of a movie made by an assembly line has started to creep into them for a few years now. We need a company with deep pockets to enter the scene and just say "We are gonna spend $200M to make 15 games this year - have fun" and get back to seeing what sticks.

FWIW Hi-Fi Rush took more than 2 years to make, it entered development in 2018 and came out in 2023 so around 5 years. It also probably didn't make money. On the flip side, having some games go cash neutral but bring people into more console gaming AND just have a great game is well worth having even for a company.

Honestly my pc is not getting much use either. not much is coming out. my ps5 is mostly there just to play some of the back log of games i didn't play in the later half of the ps4's life cycle. I play poe and games like the first descendant but that's it. The main problem is companies are looking for money over making good games. BG3 which was made by a much smaller studio was a big slap in the face to most of the industry pushing live service and sequel trash.

@@KaitouKaiju Price being a big factor on that. Steamdeck is great to have a portable PC, but like, so is a laptop. If I'm spending anywhere from $350-$650 (and it'll be closer to that $650 figure, because storage of big PC games is invaluable), I'm just gonna buy a laptop that I already need and has multiple purposes besides gaming. Deck is a cool novelty, clearly inspired by Switch, but the price and exclusives of Switch kinda can't be beat. Steamdeck did release a cheaper model, but something about it has lost it's "cool, I need that" appeal over time.

I just finished listening to the podcast Firelink from Second Wind on this exact subject and added my input while they were doing it live. I've been doing PC and Switch gaming for years and got both a series X and a PS5 for different reasons separately, but with an ultimate goal of being console agnostic for this generation. It feels like that the needle just has not moved. Like, at all. It feels like more of the same that we've been for years on the first party front, with some unique hits in the second party front. Meanwhile, the indie scene is getting over saturated.

I love my Series X so much because it's my entire 360 library from ten years ago (minus Sonic Racing with B-K) on there, through One, all the way to XS. It's got Rare Replay, so many good multiplatform games from PS4-PS5, and I just really love and prefer that controller. Xbox is capable of doing so much better, but for some reason they won't. (Halo Infinite multiplayer is fun too for a free game)

I play Halo infinite quite a bit, it's pretty good now, but it's also on Xbox one. The only True next-gen game I owned was Jedi Survivor...which is now on Xbox one. They haven't truly taken advantage of their hardware. I pray that the UE Halo game turns out well!

I agree with the Gamepass value. I used to swear on gamepass, but I found myself mostly playing longer games like RPGs... and if you play one game at a time which'll take you a few months to beat, it's not worth it.... so I started collecting physical Xbox games, since they go DIRT CHEAP. From Persona, to Nier, to Final Fantasy, to Dragon Quest, to Kingdom Hearts, to Gears, to Forza, to Halo...lots of good stuff on there.

If you can play every game on every console, only one can really support itself, which causes an assload of problems for the others. When companies sit on their laurels and are allowed to simply consolidate power, you get the same stagnant bullshit every single time because there’s no reason for games to stand out and break the mold.

That means that it’s economically more viable to make the lowest specification game they can for the widest user base and then simply do a bit of upscaling or technical finessing and claim it as THE redesigned and rebooted top tier game product for the latest generation of console gaming machine like PS5 Pro for example? It’s much easier and more cost effective to do that than to build a game specifically for the PS5 Pro and it’s smaller user base and then try to shoe horn that high spec game into a lower tech console like basic PS5 or even PS4. This is exactly the problem that has held Xbox Series X games back because they have to be able to run on the lower specifications of the Xbox Series S as well and the end result is that developers simply make the most basic specification of game that will tick just enough boxes to get that Xbox Series X top tier gaming title while actually being low key designed for the Xbox Series S and all that entails. Almost half of the Sony PlayStation PSN user base is still rocking a PS4 console and it’s much easier to design a PS4 game and buff it up a little to call it a PS5 reboot than to make a top tier PS5 game and then make it work somehow on lower spec consoles. This was a problem that CD Projekt RED had when trying to get their Cyberpunk 2077 game to run well on the older consoles.

I'm left wondering why doesn't Sony or Xbox just make bite sized AA games? Like 'modernized' PS2 games in a way? They can experiment more without needing a crazy budget, they can give the games unique visuals without chasing after crazy high fidelity graphics, and they can most importantly just focus on making fun, good games. Do players really want more of the same AAA 3rd person open world games? Surely if these guys marketed and published these smaller, but great experiences people will give them a chance. A good reason for this is that game devolpment is taking so long these days. Square enix who delivered a lot of the masterpieces of the PlayStation are now taking a long time to make games like ff7 remake trilogy it took 4 years to make ffvii rebirth and for the final part it’ll take more time since it’ll include the rest of the game which is pretty huge and has a lot of plot if you played the original on ps1. By the time it releases the hardware of the ps5 will be outdated

As an Xbox fan, I have to agree. The first party department has been lacking on Xbox. Scott described it perfectly too, modern Halo feels like a corporate entity that just exists, “appeals” to what’s popular in video games today but doesn’t really have much passion in it. I’m just sticking with Xbox cause it was my first major console, and I don’t want to lose all my progress, friends, and purchases. Plus Xbox still has some selling points for me, primarily backwards compatibility, quick resume, and I’m not the biggest fan of PlayStation exclusives to the point where I’ll buy a PS5 and take up space that could’ve been used for a Nintendo Switch or something. But I still enjoy Halo the Master Chief Collection, Halo Infinite is an occasional pleasure to play with my friends, and I actually enjoyed Starfield. People wanted something vastly different, I personally liked the way Bethesda did their RPGs in the past and didn’t want them to change too much. Plus, since games like Elder Scrolls 6 are coming to Xbox and PC only, yeah. But, even then Xbox could be doing better. I liked Starfield, but I’d still take Skyrim or Fallout in a heartbeat. Halo Infinite I’ll install for a few months, get bored, and don’t play it again for a year. It seems like there’s not much hope for Halo’s future right now. To be honest, once I get the money, I’m getting a PC. I’ll keep an Xbox or Nintendo console for casual play or split screen with my friends and family, but I’d prefer a PC. It gets both consoles’ games anyway these days, no online subscription fee, mod capabilities, indie and fan games not available on console, emulation, and I can always upgrade it to keep up with future games. But for now, I’m sticking with Xbox as my primary console, and Nintendo secondary. But both PlayStation and Xbox aren’t like they used to be in the 6th and 7th generation. Nintendo has been completely consistent at least.

Budgets for modern games have gotten so out of hand that companies don't dare to greenlight anything new or unexpected. Spider Man 2 on PS5 was great but with a budget of 300 million dollars is it better than thirty 10 million dollar games, or even three hundred 1 million dollar games. Sure none of those would have the visual spectacle of Spider-Man 2, but it would give room for new exciting ideas that could bring the industry forward instead of letting it stagnate, and let's face it some of those games would be just as good or better than the AAA-budget game.

I think one big factor about this is that a bunch of big games suchs as GOW:R and Metaphor Re:Fantazio are also being released on the previous gen as well as current gen. It's also kinda sorta like a Wii U situation where tons of the games on Wii U were similar to what was on Wii or 3DS, which did not incentivize people to pick up the new machine. Also no price drops either. There also wasnt much of a graphical leap either, at least compared from something like PS1 to Ps2/PS2 to PS3 or N64 to GCN.
