The type pairings of gen 1 (and the limited number of moves for some types as you pointed out with aerodactyl and gengar v alakazam) made some type alignments really confusing for me as a kid. I swear, I only realized rock wasn't weak to ice a couple years ago. There's only, like, two pokemon that are ground without rock; and I don't think there's any pure rock types 😵 Doesn't help I skipped from gen 3 to Sword/Shield either 🤷♂️

Dunno if anyone commented on this yet but In Yellow Lorelei is the only character with unique AI. She's coded to avoid always using rest, because that can softlock the game. Most notably if you use rage in red/blue
@Matthias.Abaddon3 жыл бұрын
Idk of you've gotten good answers to some questions, but I have a few tricks for you going forward: -Eevee's evolution is determined by winning or losing the first and optional battles with him before Brock. Since you won the first one and seemingly skipped the optional battle, you got flareon. If you would have lost the first, you would get vaporeon. If you win both, you get jolteon. That's intentional as most players would explore with their Pikachu and be sure to win every battle possible early game, so they make it more challenging for Pikachu later and if anyone were to lose, the game would think the player may not be as experienced so they make it easier for Pikachu. -Trainers do have their move selection at the beginning of their turn. If they go first, they choose first. If you go first, they choose immediately after you move. This can be seen if you are facing jolteon in the final battle for example and you have a pidgeot out but switch to a kadabra. Instead of using thunderbolt, a move that WOULD have been super effective, if you use pin missile, which is NOW super effective against the mon you switched into that turn. -certain trainers, notably Blaine, have an item use glitch in all of gen 1 with super potions. Blaine is SUPPOSED to have programmed x special, most likely, but that is why he is prone to use super potions at full health. (I know you didn't ask that but a fun fact.)

You seem to be under the impression that Rock is weak to Ice ("4 times damage Ice Beam" vs Aerodactyl). That has never been the case, it's neutral. Only Ground is weak to Ice. I have been wondering why you would always pick Ice Beam over Bubblebeam or even Surf when facing Onyx, Rhyhorn etc, because Water is actually 4 times effective against those Rock/Ground types, in addition to geting STAB boost.

As many will mention, eeveelutions are determined by how many fights you win. Basically, it is all balanced around pikachu (which they practically guilt trip you into using, because mascot character). If you lose every fight, the game takes it easy on you and gives you a vaporeon that you can take down with pikachul. If you win everything, then they will try to make it harder for your pikachu by throwing another electric type. If you a middling, then whatever, throw out a flareon. This is meant to show that you have a direct effect on your rival, since he either views you as a threat or a non-issue, and he adjusts accordingly.

it doesn't choose after damage is dealt but it calculates damage after you make your choice and then chooses in response to that. That's for instance why the AI doesn't heal when the pokemon is low. The AI is like "Oh, lol, I'm dead, gotta choose a move to not softlock" and why you get a full health potion on blanes Arcanine so often. it usually outspeeds, but it calculated that your attack will put it into healing range. It hasn't taken the damage yet but makes its choice like it already has. That's the reason for the good old retroactive potion as well

@fifaworldcup19944 жыл бұрын
20:09 Kinda late to this, but yes you can. I think that it is determined by the results in the first two rival battles (in Oak's lab and the optional battle on Route 22) If you win those two, Eevee will evolve into Jolteon. If you lose one and win the other (I don't think order matters), Eevee will evolve into Flareon. If you lose both, Eevee will evolve into Vaporeon. Btw, I think not fighting against him on Route 22 will count that as a loss after you get the first badge, so that's probably the reason why you end up facing a Flareon in most of these runs. 25:40 Yes, you are correct on that. The AI in Gen 1 isn't like in later games, where the opponent chooses its move before the turn, but it can choose its move AFTER you selected yours, which can give situations like the one you faced with Sabrina. 30:56 See, you seemed to miss out on a slightly different change from RB to Yellow. In Yellow, the game checks if the enemy is Lorelei's Dewgong. If it is, then the AI will change how it selects its moves, meaning that it will no longer use Rest every time. Why was this done, you may ask? See, there is an infamous softlock in RB which abuses this AI to get you stuck in Lorelei's room, with no possible way to get out. As to why it used Rest three times in a row here, idk, maybe you got lucky with its move selection or something.
@ScottsThoughtsPokemon4 жыл бұрын
Yeah I've figured out the rival eeveelution selection for more recent runs! That is incredibly interesting about Lorelei's Dewgong... It's funny how many strange programming errors had to be accomodated for when moving from RB to Yellow. They certainly didn't fix everything.

Because of a soft lock in red and blue you could get yourself stuck in the Lorelei fight by saving in her room with a fighting pokemon or poison pokemon that doesn't have an ice weakness isn't strong enough to take out Dewgong and knows rage which will go on endlessly so long as it hits after that even if it a miss you are unable to move due to paralysis or even being put to sleep The battle will never end because rage will keep going so long as it connects once and Dewgong will keep healing and in gen 1 (as you probably know) the opponents pokemon don't have PP so no struggle or being forced to forced to use other moves from Dewgong. So in yellow version the code checks to see if the pokemon you are fighting is Lorelei's Dewgong if it is it will not nessasarily use its "smart AI" to avoid this softlock. Awesome video: a lot of your questions have been answered about the AI but this video explains pretty much “why” this stuff happens: kzbin.info/www/bejne/bqq4gZuIf9mBgK8 Basically on the second turn moves like rest are prioritized higher than on the first turn and based off health (like if below 1/5th) they in crease priority for healing items. For future runs with water types I highly suggest not using surf. It is a permanent slot on the movelist that should be a last resort as it is only super effective against 4 Pokémon in the elite 4 and is barely stronger than bubble beam. Having mega drain would have been much more effective vs lauralei and using blizzard is more effective than ice beam / it allows you to replace ice beam with mega drain for lauralei and then use blizzard for lances dragons

If you are using the Universal Pokémon Randomiser, it is possible to change the rival's starter as well as your own, but IIRC the game does have the rival change to have the 'correct' starter in later battles. You can set the UPR to have the rival keep their starter in the Trainer Pokemon tab. Maybe try doing that? I'm not sure if that works for games that aren't _truly_ randomised, though (i.e. where pokémon are randomised all over, not just for when you change the starters and nothing else) Apologies if this has already been answered

@Scott's Thoughts Aerodactyl is a Rock/Flying type. Rock is neutral defensively against Ice attacks. So, Ice Beam isn't 4x effective against Aerodactyl, Onix, or Rhydon (both Rock/Ground types). It's 2x effective due to Onix and Rhydon's Ground typing and Aerodactyl's Flying typing. Really, you're better off using Surf against those Pokemon. In the case of Onix and Rhydon, or other rock-ground types, Surf is 4x effective because both Rock and Ground are 2x weak to Water. In the case of Aerodactyl, Surf is just 2x effective, but you do get STAB, so it's better than Ice Beam, especially considering Surf is the same base power as Ice Beam in gen 1. Now, if the Pokemon you were using was part Ice type, then it wouldn't matter if you picked Ice Beam over Surf. It might not seem like it matters, considering you one-shotted Aerodactyl, but had you been a lower level, it could have meant the difference between an OHKO and Aerodactyl getting another change to take you down. Now, on the flip side, Rock is 2x effective against Ice types, offensively. So definitely use moves like Rock Slide against Ice types if the Pokemon you're using learns it and has decent physical attack. So yeah, you might want to study type effectiveness. In Gen 1, Rock hits the following types super effectively for 2x damage: Bug, Flying, Fire, and Ice. Rock is resisted offensively by the following types: Fighting and Ground. Rock resists defensively the following types: Fire, Flying, Normal, and Poison. Rock is damaged super effectively (x2) by the following types: Grass, Water, Ground, Steel (in Gen 2 and beyond) and Fighting. Rock has a couple of type combinations it's super effective x4 against (offensively): Bug/Flying, Fire/Flying, Bug/Ice, Flying/Ice, Bug/Fire, any other possible type combos aren't in the game currently. Rock, when paired with Ground, has two 4x weaknesses: Water and Grass. Rock, when paired with Flying (as in the case of Aerodactyl) has no 4x weaknesses, but does have several 2x weaknesses: Electric, Rock, Ice, Water, and Steel. That type combo resists the following types: Normal, Flying, Poison, Bug, and Fire. Everything else is neutral, both offensively and defensively.

Hey Scott can you do a Gen 4 run solo?
@ScottsThoughtsPokemon3 жыл бұрын
In awhile I'll finally get there... Gen 4 is my least favourite generation. (I say on the day that two remakes were planned for Sinnoh...)
