Cheers to the 700+ people who entered to win the 6 driver Westone IEMs (a new record). The winner is @bassbycoop Congratulations! Remember, I will NEVER ask you for money in any way for these. Also, many thanks to those who listened to the new Spiral Cell album. I saw a large uptick in streaming/listens after this video, and it means a lot to me that some of you took the time to check out my original music. Thanks again :) A couple of tips I left out of this video: -Adding reverb to your ears can help a lot and not make it sound so dry -Scooping out some of the low end can prevent it from sounding muddy. This is a delicate process, you don't want to overdo it, but low end and low mids is where you get "mud" -Make sure the sensitivity/gain is set properly on your IEMs. Too quiet of a signal will cause noise when you turn up, and too hot of a signal can cause distortion. Hope that helps! Leave any other helpful tips down below if you have any :)

Hi, My 2c for IEM as Scott mentioned are the KZ/CCA in ear monitors. I am a pianist playing at a rock band. Mostly piano and electric piano sounds. For about 2 years, I used the KZ ZS 10 pro, and it was ok, but I felt something is missing. Recently I purchased the CCA pianist, and I was a game changer. My piano is the KORG SV2. The first time I played with the CCA pianist I felt that I am playing a real acoustic grand piano. Now I can hear all the nuances of a real grand. It makes me to play a lot more.

Drummer here and a hobby/side hustle soundman! Found your channel a few months ago and has helped me understand wireless frequencies, to get a great wireless mic. Also recently helped me get bass player for band I run sound for to ditch his rig and go in ears, a quadruple win for him, the band stage volume, me to mix them better, and the audience. Spiral cell is the way! ✌️

Great review as usual, Scott. A couple of comments: 1.) The biggest gain for me is when I went to stereo. Totally worth it! 2.) As far as custom molds, I've had them made for me three separate times and I've never had anywhere near as good of an isolation seal as I do with Comply tips. Maybe it's just me. Anyway, Spiral Cell and all that good stuff. Rock on! Oh, and I did have a "welcome to the future" moment yesterday. Playing a very casual gig with a pickup band, and I asked the sound guy, "Can I do IEMs? And if so, can I do my own mix?" He said sure thing, and after I'd downloaded the mix app to my iPhone, I was off and running. This sort of thing would not have happened ten years ago, and it was just an everyday thing now. Since I've been playing for about sixty years, I started in the days of no monitors. You just listened to your voice coming out of the PA speakers. Fun times, but things are WAY better now.

Yeah Man! Isn’t that great? Sometimes we get to do that as well. Some sound guys don’t want that, but some of them are completely fine with it 🤘

Hi Scott. I run IEM for my own bands and when ai mix for others. Ambient mics are a must. One trick I’ve used is to setup a ducker on the ambience mics, triggered by the music. It drops the mics by around 10db when the music starts. It does wonders to clean up the mix, but also run the mics louder between songs. Singers (front people) love it. Even little Behringer C2’s are good enough, and cheap.
@SebastianUminski5 ай бұрын
I followed a lot of your tips so far. CCA IEM is one of my discoveries - very affordable and good quality. What I like the most though is your practical set up with real-life examples from your gigs. My Spiral Cell brain is heavilly affected by your down to earth approach.

Spiral Cell, cool name for an album! Also, Spiral Cells are used in batteries and capacitors among other things because that configuration gives a very high surface area between plates or electrodes in a small space, and surface area is a huge determinant of capacity in current carrying applications such as batteries or capacitance in the case of capacitors. I really enjoy your videos! They are very informative! Keep up the great work. Also these IEM’s would be great for me because I’m just getting my band going and I have to practice with headphones at night and good quality IEM’s would help with clarity when learning new music by ear. Thank you and have a great day!

Great video, Scott! One thing I would add about IEMs and the sound occlusion they create is that (even with custom fitted earpieces) many of the low frequencies are still going to bleed through into your ears. A good approach I have used is to hi-pass or dial back some of the low-end EQ in your IEM mix, and bring the remainder up only enough to blend with the low-end naturally bleeding into your ears. This rolling off results in better separation in your IEM mix, and won't push the drivers/armatures so hard. It also means you'll be saving your hearing by lowering your overall mix volume.

Good info. I've been on in-ears for about 20 years now, starting with a basic Shure system and moving to a more advanced Shure system recently. Something to remember is that as frequencies are assigned to cell phones and network systems, older systems may be interfered with in venues or by users of those devices, so it's best to keep up with the tech. #SpiralCell Spiral Cell.
