Scotty, does driving under 2500rpm from the lube joint to the house probably not kill anything? Got to my pump (Harbor Freight) ASAP, a whole quart over, and the oil was dark brown! Obviously, they hadn't drained the oil long enough then used the computerized pump set to 5q (the norm for 97 Toyota Avalon), without thinking. I checked the level before leaving, showed the guy, he said "well sure, older cars will read that way on the dipstick". I called HIM a dipstick, he offered to redo it, I say, "you are never touching my car again", left, came back next day, described to manager, went back today, mgr told me he fired the dipstick. There are smart people out there!

In addition to checking the oil when the engine is cold, it is also important to pull the dipstick out, wipe it off, and put it back in and pull it out a second time to get an accurate reading. As oil cools and changes viscosity (thickness) it will tend to creep up the dipstick, which will give a false reading of having more oil, than is actually is in the engine. I've seen it creep up the dipstick 1/4 to 1/2 inch, which created an artificially high reading.

Driving back from my shop, I saw a guy in an older (80's) Toyota having issues. Car was running bad, and it was puking thick white smoke. I was in the shop truck, so I stopped to see if I could help. Guy said he'd just done an oil change and could not understand why it was running so badly. He opened the hood, pulled the dipstick for the AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION, and said "look, it's right where it should be!" Opening the filler cap showed oil, covering the camshaft. On an OHC engine. Told him to "Go across the street to the Fry's (Kroger) and get a kitty litter pan, a sack of kitty litter, and aroll of paper towels.". I swear, I drained at least two gallons of oil from that engine. But now, it had the proper volume of oil. It smoked a LOT, but that stout little mill eventually cleared up. I took a yellow paint marker and colored the engine dipstick so he could find it easier.

Great video Scotty and a very important one too. On some occasions when my car's been at the garage I noticed they topped the oil up way too high. So I made my own vacuum pump from a big syringe and a bicycle brake cable in case I ever need to drain it out again. I think some mechanics are a bit clueless and tend to check oil levels after engine's been running.

I have a Toyota Matrix and went to Walmart for new wiper blades. The mechanic looked at the rear wiper and said that I would have to take it to the dealership to change rear blade. He said that the dealership will have to remove it and install. I said okay and drove across the street at AutoZone. I never mentioned what the technician said at Walmart. I asked for new wiper blades. Inside a minute he had all my wiper blades installed. I watched him flick a switch on rear wiper and it took a second to change. It all depends on where you go. I used to work at a Car-X as a lube tech. The owners son (who ran the place and trained me on how he wanted things done) was very specific on how to do it the right way and no car I did ever left over filled. I would bet my life on that. Of course that was not so much a 'quick lube' because they ran by appointment at 20 minute intervals usually.

@@cristiancenteno6876 Your manual transmission is 9/10 times just splash gears, meaning it lubricates all the gears via rotating the oil and splashing it. @@fartnutssupreme4930 No. You need to contact Subaru Corporate and find out. They give you an adviser and then they go to their engineering team to give you an answer. I kept the email record and printed it out for documentation, but now I have about 100,000 miles and no problems (it started burning oil at 40,000). They said it won't harm it at all on the H6 but they also said it does not apply to other engines (the amounts are different). Best of luck.

Or just carry extra oil with you and check it every time you get gasoline.. which is what should be done anyway. That's why pump have the hold latch so you can do other things while the tank fills.

Morning Scotty! Thoughts on buying a car that has a bad head gasket? I'm looking at a 2001 Honda CRV for $500. Owner says it has a bad head gasket. Can I fix this myself? Is it worth the time and money? Thanks!

If you can change a alternator you can probably do a head gasket if not dont do it
@heykoolaid2004
@heykoolaid2004 5 жыл бұрын
Scotty has said before that if you are buying a car and the seller says it has a blown head gasket, then beware. It might be the head gasket, sure, but that might not be the problem. It could be a cracked engine block or something else. If you still are interested in buying the car, then he always says - find a mechanic like him to check it out because if the engine block is cracked or if the head gasket has been blown for a long time, then there could be other problems like Antifreeze in the oil which can cause excessive wear and tear to all the moving parts that need it and so on. So, the $500 might seem like a good deal, but it's going to be a bad day if you buy it and then find out that the whole engine needs to be replaced.

How many miles?. The premium FelPro kit for that CRV is about $100. See if hell take $100 off incase the head is cracked or warped, or valves are bent. It may have a bad head gasket, but it probably needs a little more.

European makers frequently specify adding +1 extra quart during spirited driving / track. Not 2, just 1.
@HostileLemons
@HostileLemons 5 жыл бұрын
Never knew that but I suppose that's because the pump is using oil so fast that the sump level gets low and the pump can be starved of oil until the sump refills which will kill the pump and engine
@juicebox22a
@juicebox22a 5 жыл бұрын
HostileLemons I agree. Euros tend to have higher sump capacities and baffles in the oil pans. I keep mine topped up. Hot lube oil sent to bearings is lovely. Foamy oil/air mix is bad. I tend to drive more spiritedly when I am a solo driver 😉 😉.
