I almost bought a 1968 Pontiac Firebird for $7,100 on EBay more than 10 years ago. It needed a few tweaks and fixes to make it a daily driver, but I just didn't feel confident buying a car online. It would be worth a lot more today. I ended up not buying it and instead saved the money for a down payment on a home. It was the right decision.

I currently have two mechanics that appreciate my bringing parts. They have come to know that I bring the right parts. Secondly, they are not on the hook when a part fails. In defense of mechanics charging a reasonable markup on parts: It takes time to identify, locate and procure parts. Additionally, costs of doing business rent/mortgage on shop, utilities and time redoing a job because of a part failure. These costs must be covered or the next time you need service your mechanic will not be there! Merry Christmas to all Mechanics and a Happy New Year Too!

Hi Scotty! I have big respect for your work. I'm a big rig driver, not a mechanic. But I know lot about cars and trucks, and I know a lot of mechanics, and have spent lots, and lots of time with them,so I know you're a good one! You bring closer many thigs to average driver. And that is priceless for people who don't know anything about their vehicles, but they are willing to learn, not just to turn the key and drive off. One question (of a many I would ask you): You told us about changing oil in automatic transmission in 50000 miles. (some say in VW DSG even in 20000 mls). And I agre with you.. But,all transmission specialist here in my country say same (50.000) for manual gearbox,if you want to last and shift smoothly for long time. I agree with them too. Doing it personally in my cars for long time.(and there are "experts" who think,by habbit, that we should pour more, when there is a lack of fluid. I think that they don't know that all fluids are hygroscopic, and that changing fluid in brakes, steering and gearbox is just big fraud of big companies and authorised dealers) What is your opinion about that? Greetings from Serbia!

If you're starting out buying a classic car, I'd recommend a VW Beetle, either an original model or the Super Beetle. They're cheap because they made them by the millions, they're easy to work on with parts readily available, and with most of the weight being over the driven wheels they get surprisingly good traction regardless of the weather or road conditions.

I couldn't agree except for one minor detail... Any year or model of VW as long as it came with 5 lugs nuts per wheel assembly. I believe 67 was the last year of the 5 lugs, it was also the first year for a 12 volt electrical system... Buying a 75 super beetle, with fuel injection and air conditioning is still going to be just what it is.. Few more months of saving for a pre 67 I feel will be worth it..especially when the 48 Ida's are screaming or the 45 side draft on the pull thru turbo system.

My advice is to be able to/learn how to do a lot of your own work. Engine work is easy. Learn to do basic welding, wiring, etc. And don’t be afraid to try. Cars are not rocket science. Basic intelligence, patience, persistence, and the right tools (many of which you can borrow for free from Autozone) are the key/will go a long way. My saying is, “I have more time than disposable income.” I worked on brakes for two days once because I refused to pay what repair shops charge. The internet and KZbin are your friend. If not, you better be rich.

My recommendation on buying a project is to buy the cool body on frame car you can afford but be willing and ready to learn on it how to fabricate. I say body on frame because you can easily swap parts for newer model parts that are cheaper and easily available in the junkyards, make the engine carbureted and learn from there. Once you understand the basics you can get fancy with EFI, plug on coil ignitions and so on. Something I learned is to never settle for the lesser once you gain footing and have a good conceptual understanding of what a project car is (really expensive legos is the analogy I give most)

I recently had some suspension work done on my 2001 Chrysler Sebring Convertible Limited and I was kinda surprised that the shop in Dallas said I could buy the parts myself and bring them over or they could do it. Like you said Scotty....while I can lookup a part number with the best of them, I'm no expert and maybe I'd get all the right parts or maybe not, either way, the shop gets paid to install/uninstall them....so I had the shop order the parts (they didn't mark them up) and do it right the first time.

A classic car sales purchase is a minefield for the average buyer. Be very cautious when dealing with those type of businesses. When somebody advertises "frame off" or "rotisserie" restoration ask for photo or video documentation. They usually don't have any because they bought the car to flip. WHAT DO YOU MEAN THE 65 FALCON HAS BASICALLY THE SAME ENGINE AND PARTS AS THE 68 STANG FAST BACK. so saying don't buy the stang and do buy the falcon is not good advice. as long as you can afford the stang initial cost.

Yep you gotta buy OEM parts for major items on your car such as timing belt kit, alternators, water pumps CV gaitors, drop links, track rod ends. Pattern brake pads, rotors, gaskets etc are usually ok. Pattern CV gaitors last 1-2 years for example whereas OEM ones last 7+ years and inner ones last even longer because they dont move as much as the outer ones.

Excellent advice on buying parts. My biggest issue right now is constantly having to replace my starter on my 1981 Mercedes 240d diesel. I have gone through 5 starters in the last year and a half. Either O'Reillys is selling cheap starters or something else is wrong. I have another O'Reilly's starter that I replaced on 7/21/18. AAA checked the batteries on wires and they were good. O'Reilly's checked the starter on the machine and it did nothing. This time it was the Wilson starter from O'Reilly's. This starter lasted 11 months, so it did better than the Ultima's which is the store brand from O'Reilly's. I even have a a new ignition switch on the car that I put in around November of last year that I purchased from Mercedes Source. With the Ultima I just put on the first 2 times trying to start it spun the motor but the solenoid would not engage the bendix gear. Everytime it is the same problem that the solenoids go bad.

Reminded me when 1997, I bought a 17years old FIAT 127... fun car, learnt a lot from it but had to give up when the engine blew up the second time.. Heck! When changing the clutch plate, took 3days to look for the spare part. Only to realised at a spares shop when saw a very similar clutch plate with the FIAT 127 but for another totally different car model.. took out the worn FIAT clutch plate and put it side by side - it WAS the same.. apparently the FIAT was using the same clutch plate as the VOLVO 240!!!...

I prefer OEM parts in nearly all cases whenever possible-including brake pads/shoes. They always fit, they always work like they're suppose to, they usually last far longer than aftermarket parts.

My mechanic charges roughly twice for parts what I could buy them for. But, he also warranties the work for both parts and labor. The labor charge is there regardless, so I chalk up the price markup on the parts as the cost of the warranty. Since he stands behind his work and does good work, I'm okay with that.

Another tip for classic cars. Don't go for a classic car that has high popularity. High popularity = High demand and High demand = High price tag regardless of condition. Going for something like a Chevy Nomad is going to be cheaper than a Chevelle, Bel-Air, or El Camino. Even going with some models of Corvette's will get you a decent affordable project car because they're more despised by the car snobs. So you can get an awesome, (if somewhat underpowered) sports car. Time and research helps out big time. Personally, I'd love to have a 1966 Oldsmobile Toronado. You can get one for a decent price as people hated them for being front-wheel drive.

You should do a video review of the 1988 Pontiac Fiero GT with the 5 speed manual. Do research on the last year (completely different suspension) model Fiero, it is a future classic, this mid engine American car deserves it’s spotlight for one of the coolest cars of the 80’s.

From someone who owns an old classic car. Buy a car in your budget and get one in the best condition you can get it in. Body work is extremely expensive. Keep it in a garage if possible and never drive it in the winter when the roads are salted.

I had a mechanic who is independent from the dealership and sent me to go buy a part from the dealership and gave me his mechanics registered number. That number discounted parts from the dealership. Most time mechanics can find the part cheaper since they buy more parts and get special discounts regular consumers can't get.

Scotty I disagree on customer supplying parts . I want the mechanic to concentrate on the labor of the job not searching for parts. Also I like to upgrade my parts also (suspension great example) I agree having a mechanic put on low end parts and blame him for failure down the road is not right. The cat pillow rocks- I have a similar one of a Siamese. What is your thoughts on a used 1991-1994 F150 with the 4.9L straight 6 4 X 4 w/5spd manual ? Not a speed demon but that old 4.9L can last over 200k !! LOVE the body style- Last of the real trucks in my opinion.

Hey scotty could you do a video on best and worst choices within a vehicle class? I'm looking to buy a mid-large size family sedan around $10-12 500 and am leaning towards a 2015 camry. I like the accords too and like the newer Mazda 6 the most, but am unsure of the reliability and cost of ownership compared to the Toyota and Honda. Thanks Another comparison I would be interested in is pick up trucks, best and worst.
