Scotty Kilmer I have a question Scotty. If your throttle body is electric. Your not suppoed to open the little flap with your finger correct? I was under the impression that was only ok on vehicles with a throttle cable. Does it really matter will it mess the throttle body up?

My tip: do not use the red plastic straw when you clean your throttle body. The reason is some times they fly off when spraying and it will shoot right inside of your throttle body/engine. For this application, there is no need for it, so leave it off.

Important Note! In some cars you have to unhook the battery in order for the car to reset. I cleaned my throttle plate and maf sensor and my 03 Camry had a high idle that wouldn't go away by restarting the car. I also had a check engine light. Once I unhooked the battery and put the cable back on it, everything worked smoothly and the check engine light went away. Scotty is the best!!

@Ian Smith yeah just disconnect the Negative battery terminal before doing any work on your car most of the time. For instance, to remove modern car seats, disconnect the negative battery terminal, have it unconnected for 20 minutes before you go unplug the seat sensors & unbolt the seat & remove it. ( sorry for being off topic I know the video’s about MAF sensors & throttle body )

Maybe even turn the headlights on to make sure power is drained.

Also works great if your vehicle has a hard time starting, no matter if hot or cold. (Clean it when it's cold) as my Saturn would start great when it was cold, but once warmed up, you had to hit the gas some to keep it running. Cleaned the throttle and no more starting issues. It was almost black from all the gunk on it, so took an entire can of cleaner to get it cleaned. Just something I'd pass along, as who knows who else is having that issue.

If you have an electronic throttle body don't use this technique. Either take the throttle body off the car (only 4 8mm bolts, and you can replace the $2 gasket in case you have a small vacuum leak) or if you're gonna clean it on the car have someone step on the accelerator to open the butterfly flap. Concentrate on the edges of the flap and where the flap sits in the closed position. See how to reset your computer after the cleaning. Scotty has a video on that.
@michaelallen5505
@michaelallen5505 9 ай бұрын
I have an '07 Saturn Vue. The throttle was horribly gunked up. I turned the key on and pushed something heavy against the accelerator to open the butterfly and clean both sides and the bore. My scan tool measures the pedal position and the throttle position, which were way out of sync at idle due to all the crud. It actually caused a code to set (I forget which one), throttle position I think. After cleaning it took the better part of a week to get a normal idle and acceleration. The throttle position eventually settled down to about half of where it had been after the computer finally relearned.

Hi, what idling problems did you have/solve? My idle runs smooth for 2 seconds, then goes 50 rpm higher for 1 sec, back to normal for 2 sec and so forth... Wondering if this could help fix it.
@tantosendjaja8438
@tantosendjaja8438 5 жыл бұрын
@@AaronMattheus My car had two problems. First, when stopping (AC on 1, coming behind traffic, brake, clutch in), engine rev would drop to 650 and vibrate, then rise back to normal 750. Second problem was during gear changes, for example when going from 3rd gear at 2500rpm to 4th at 2000rpm, the engine rev would drop too quickly that when my foot is ready to lift the clutch, the engine is already at 1500rpm causing rev mismatch and forward lurch. I only cleaned my MAF sensor. It helped to clear the second issue. Now my car hangs on to its revs for a little longer during gear changes, allowing me to change gear more smoothly. First issue needs a little more testing to see whether it has been solved. Regarding your issue... From your description, I think the 50rpm raise is caused by your AC compressor engaging to the engine. Computer anticipated the extra load by increasing idle rpm, hence the 50 rpm raise, then when the AC is engaged idle rpm reading is back to normal. It is probably not a problem. However, if what you described happened without AC on, you might want to diagnose your car.

I went to drive my car again after a 3,100 mile road trip 3 years ago and it started running like crap. It finally threw a code and went to have it checked and it said it was running lean with multiple misfires and it could possibly be a MAF sensor issue. Important Note: On many newer engines (say, last 15-10 years) there will often be a black coating inside the throttle bore where the butterfly closes (often 'eyebrow' shaped) and sometimes also on the edge of the throttle. This may be a factory applied coating and NOT a dirty mark. It is a molybdenum coating and is supposed to be there. The coating reduces build-up and stops the throttle sticking. If you spray and wipe as shown in this video, there is a good chance you will remove the coating. You have been warned.

+1Fast GXP For people that are not sponsored by CRC that would be stupid, you use what works. These two products are completely useless and horridly overpriced. CRC got their 5-56 and that is about the only thing they ever managed to get right but that said, 5-56 is without any doubt the most versatile oil there is on the market. I'd bet you anything you'd like that you could use 5-56 for both of these jobs and get the same result.

well carbon build up on the throttle body is listed as a cause for the code: www.yourmechanic.com/article/p0507-obd-ii-trouble-code-idle-control-system-rpm-higher-than-expected-by-spencer-clayton so cleaning the trottle would never hurt. its worth a shot as if even if that is not what is causing the code, its always good to keep them clean.

i suggest removing the throttle body, lets you drain the gunk out instead of having to try and wipe anything away and you don't have to worry about it vapors/fluid going down to the engine, the vapors will prevent the engine from starting.

@luisloks
@luisloks 7 жыл бұрын
well, i would say it depends on how confident you are on your mechanical skills bro. if you feel that taking it out is not really that complicated then go for it. taking the whole throttle body will give you a better view, it would be easier to clean the unit overall and it will allow you to go deeper into the passage. Also since you are cleaning that area, you can kill 2 birds with 1 stone and clear EGR valve and any other valves around there. but if you are not that comfortable taking it out, just cleaning it from the outside without disassembly is ok but not as great as a good full clean. I always go for the full clean since my throttle body is not difficult to take out.

I hear it's a bad idea to push with your finger on electronic throttle bodies. Only do this on the older mechanical ones. The electronic ones may need calibration if you do this. The solution to this problem would be to have a buddy turn the key to the on position and press the gas slowly to open the throttle, while the engine is not running so you can clean it.

The issue is the gunk in the throttle body can make it harder to move the plate. Making the car kind of jump rather than slow smooth acceleration. I've had customers be told their transmission is about to give when really they just had a sticky throttle body.

I work with crc products every day at work. The reason the straw comes out is because it wasn't inserted fully. You push and it clicks in halfway then you keep pushing harder until you feel a second click. I've gone through thousands of cans and never have the straw come out.
