That much is certain. Meanwhile Dodge was number two on the J.D. Powers surveys this year. Also, because of air bags and gas pedals, Scotty fails to mention that Toyota had the largest car recall in history. Toyota, Honda and Mazda should be known as the new Big 3. I live in a major city and I noticed that the old big 3 (ford, Gm, dodge ) only make up 1 in 10 of the cars you see on the road. @@joepearlzz8504 Since early 2017, I've owned both a 2014, and now currently a 2018 CX-5 (since last year), with both being the GX/Sport trim with manual transmission, non-turbo 2.0 L Skyactiv engine. One of the main reasons I settled on this vehicle was because they are made in Japan. You cannot get better, more consistent build quality or reliability than this. It is such a huge factor when you understand the difference between their cultural mindset regarding individual workmanship standards VS the entitled, North American union employee workers' mindset (even if its' from Toyota), and an abused, third world slave laborer's mindset. Expect excellent reliability, with very little maintenance. Averaging only 4500 miles, 7000 km a year on my daily commute through steep hilly terrain with the odd road trip, I just need an oil change once a year. Had to get the 2018 CX-5 when another driver ran a stop sign and my 2014 CX-5 was written off (still drove perfectly fine after the accident). With the 2014 CX-5, at only 48000 miles (77000 km), I've only ever had to replace the brakes (less than a month before it was written off).

@@thomas735 I agree, but the higher the trim levels the better the Toyota's def look. I have a 2020 rav4 hybrid and it looks very good imo esp when compared to the 2018 model which looked way more compact economy type. they are moving in a good direction. Like the rav 4 hse i think it is, and the trd model, look really nice. toyota also just released this year in the u.s. the venza, which i think rivals any luxury brands and it shares the same platform and motor as the rav 4. I think Honda is beginning to look more luxury ish as well. both Honda and toyota have higher end brands in their wheel house which they unfortunately save the better interiors and ext looks for.

@@nextleveljourney6612 The TC looked like a loaf of bread on wheels. It's body had absolutely no curve appeal or character so I would be hesitant to believe it's the aesthetic progeny of the Celica. It may have had the same engine, drive train etc as the Celica (I don't know what the TC's had in them), but then, so did the Corolla and others. I've even bought Yaris parts to replace parts on my Celica, and I recently replaced my oem 1zz engine, with a 1zz from a Corolla. So, if Toyota just mix and matches it's library of parts to build their makes and models as they do (which I've discovered through experience) Then my thinking is that the Celica (at least the GT) is mostly about sporty aesthetics more than being the sum of it's constituent parts. The TC looked like a two door loaf of bread. There was nothing sporty looking about it. Now, the GTS Celica had a 2zz Yamaha engine which was a little better than its 1zz counterpart and that engine was also used in the Lotus Evora. So that Celica was sportier, but even with that, the drive train was largely the same except the GTS had rear brake calipurs and rotors.

Some Fords and Mazdas shared the same joint effort designed Transmissions. Ford used their PCM to control them nearly flawlessly. Mazda used a troublesome stand alone TCM. The only difference between the 2 trannys was wire color used inside the transmission, bulkhead connector identification( letters vs numbers) and the control solenoids were lettered in a different order to confuse techs.

Japanese Big 3 used to be Toyota, Nissan, and Honda. Nissan got frenched, so I suppose it's Mazda's time in the sun. Turbo's almost always start leaking oil when they age. My 2009 Mazdaspeed 3 did around 90-100k miles. I kept toping off, but was putting off replacing until I finally let it go to long and oil starved the top of the engine. Rule of thumb with any turbo car: losing oil? Check turbo and plan on replacing! The Skyactiv NA's will probably go for a long time. My wife's 2014 CX-5 is still going strong at 82k miles.

Surpringly my sister's Ford has lasted her over 10 years. A Ford Expedition 2005 only thing the had really get worked on was the transmission. Which got me thinking, a car can last you a long time only you as the owner takes care of the car. Granted some company brands make crappy transmission but not ever transmission they make ends up messing up. I've noticed it only happens when the owner isn't maintaining service on the vehicle and sadly it's mostly young people. Please make sure you do your maintenance in time or as soon as possible, it can prevent accidents and it can prevent you from buying a new motor, transmission or another car

Scotty, I echo "Darth Dracula's" statement. I love your new series. Love learning about cars and their history. Great decision.

Mitsubishi and Nissan are the black sheep of the Japanese car market even though I see Nissans literally everywhere. I don’t know how Nissan does it with such subpar reliability.

In this day and age, Toyota is so expensive, I can’t afford good quality anymore. I just buy cheap junk until it dies, then scrap it! 🚗

Subaru is okay, but they are expensive and it’s not as nice as the other 3 brands. 🤔

Just follow some simple rules. What brand/model "old" cars are still on the road. What brand cars you usually see on the freeway shoulder belly-up, or waiting to be towed. Go to the junkyard and see which brand/model cars are fairly new but waiting to be scrapped. Talk to a busy mechanic. Etc. Scotty should mention Lexus (Toyota anyway) and Mercedes (some hiccups, but solid motor and tranny).

I find it ironic that on Scotties, channel, he calls out spefically the Rx8 as a great sports car, while "enthusiasts" all hated it and the unreliability issues the engine had and yada yada, and not only that but he recommends mazda as a brand along with toyota and honda, this makes me proud. the rx8 was great for the market it was aimed at, sadly the market didnt want it. and so it died.
