Got a laugh at the badger picture and sound. I ran after a badger that wandered in front of the tractor while plowing. 14 yrs old and armed with a 12" crescent wrench....I should've thought it through better. Too late the badger got to his hole and did a 180 on me and growled, maybe it was a growl/hiss/snarl but it stopped me like a brick wall. I recall looking at the wrench which looked smaller by the 1/100th of a second. I slowly backed away. Never did that again. LOL

Back in the late sixties I was working in a shop and a regular customer brought his late model Buick because it had no power and was running bad. We did the normal checks and couldn't find anything really wrong with it. We were an honest shop with a good rep and not known to give up on anything so after spending hours on this thing, I went out on a limb and said it acts like someone stuck a potato up the tailpipe. No potato, so we started it up , put it in the air and checked the exhaust , which looked perfect but was cooler just after the y-pipe. We cut the pipe open and found out it had been double piped at the factory and the inner pipe had collapsed and restricted the exhaust flow. we asked the customer and he said he had run through a giant puddle at the cottage just before the this all happened. The inside pipe was hotter and the sudden cooling caused it to collapse while the outside looked normal. Your story reminded me of this.

If you are the person that does little maintenance on your car, the most important thing you should do is check and change your oil regularly.
@bigl5343
@bigl5343 3 жыл бұрын
Yep, a car with a well-built engine will last forever, but only if basic maintenaince is performed. Engine oil is the most important fluid in the car. It amazes me that some neglect changing oil. My 98 Camry has 273,000 miles, still starts and runs strongly because I keep clean oil in the engine. Everything else is falling apart on her, lol, but has only requred minimal basic care to keep her running strong.

It stops holding oil pressure in the actuator so it makes that rattle on cold starts at 84000 miles. Previous owner changed the oil at 10 to 12 thousand miles probably why it failed. 1100 dollars for part and labor at Honda dealer. Scotty, I worked on a tree crew for a county in MD. The boss's truck was a Dodge crew cab pickup, and every morning and afternoon the truck would pick up and drop off fellow workers. I would use the Dodge, which was high mileage to get lunch for the guys on my crew. The front end would pop and crack when turns were made--- it was a bad sound, and I said that the front end needed serious work. I was told that I didn't know what I was talking about. Well, one afternoon going home that truck, with about 5 riders, was crossing railroad tracks, and right then, both front wheels came unmoored from the linkage and wound up laying flat on the road. The front end was totally shot due to high mileage, and no remediation measures being taken. Had a train come along right at that time, people could have been hurt or killed; not to mention later on the trip, they would've hit 65-70 mph on I-270.

Yes! Old oil on the filter o-ring... so it doesn't roll / pinch. I get mean looks for using dirty oil, but the clean oil is usually not open yet, or it's way over there. Never had a problem.

I had a mechanic at a dealer tell me you can't use the oil dipstick as a gauge after he put in 1 quart too much! I never went back. I have found out that manufacturers make warm and cool dipsticks and the oil temp needs to be warm or cool to match for accuracy. I have not found an easy way to know which one an engine has. Most manuals don't specify warm or cool. On another note, I found some engines have left and right sparkplugs from the factory! Crazy! The replacements work for both sides. It's in my manual with 3 part numbers, left, right and both.

Dad had a '62 vette with racing spin-off/on lug nut. he was driving down a backroad in early 70's. He told me that he remembered checking rear mirrors and enjoyed the PA forest scenery one Saturday afternoon. suddenly a blob appeared on his passengers side mirror, eventually that blob made its appearance right outside passengers window. It was a tire and wheel spinning and bouncing as it aimed for the ditch. Wheel did a 20 foot jump into woods. He checked rear mirror, no one behind him. He was yelling " what the H". moments, later ss he turned a left hand corner his front end started to lift toward right. He stopped his vette in middle of road. My dad went around and saw rear brake disc hanging above ground, unscathed. He was at least two things. impressed at corvette frame integrity and balance. How far the wheel landed. Because he spent good 30 minutes looking for the wheel and hand pushed it back. spun it back on, used a rock to smash the spin-off lug tighter. Drove home.

One car I used to have had the tube extending down from the airbox to take in air from down low--I removed that on purpose to reduce the risk of sucking in water. If the reader thinks it'll negatively affect performance due to sucking warm air or removing a ram-air kinda setup or something, understand that as much as I appreciate performance, this thing was a 1.5L 4 banger spec'd at 92HP stock, and I didn't notice a difference that I recall.

I used to have a Beetle back in the 70s, and it would go easily through floods. All I had to do is to keep accelerating. Sometimes the wave would almost reach the wind shield. And of course, the water wouldn't come into the car. I'd never dare to do it in a modern car. I wonder what happens with electric cars if they go through floods.
