Back in the late sixties I was working in a shop and a regular customer brought his late model Buick because it had no power and was running bad. We did the normal checks and couldn't find anything really wrong with it. We were an honest shop with a good rep and not known to give up on anything so after spending hours on this thing, I went out on a limb and said it acts like someone stuck a potato up the tailpipe. No potato, so we started it up , put it in the air and checked the exhaust , which looked perfect but was cooler just after the y-pipe. We cut the pipe open and found out it had been double piped at the factory and the inner pipe had collapsed and restricted the exhaust flow. we asked the customer and he said he had run through a giant puddle at the cottage just before the this all happened. The inside pipe was hotter and the sudden cooling caused it to collapse while the outside looked normal. Your story reminded me of this.

Scotty, I worked on a tree crew for a county in MD. The boss's truck was a Dodge crew cab pickup, and every morning and afternoon the truck would pick up and drop off fellow workers. I would use the Dodge, which was high mileage to get lunch for the guys on my crew. The front end would pop and crack when turns were made--- it was a bad sound, and I said that the front end needed serious work. I was told that I didn't know what I was talking about. Well, one afternoon going home that truck, with about 5 riders, was crossing railroad tracks, and right then, both front wheels came unmoored from the linkage and wound up laying flat on the road. The front end was totally shot due to high mileage, and no remediation measures being taken. Had a train come along right at that time, people could have been hurt or killed; not to mention later on the trip, they would've hit 65-70 mph on I-270.

It was a tire and wheel spinning and bouncing as it aimed for the ditch. Wheel did a 20 foot jump into woods. He checked rear mirror, no one behind him. He was yelling " what the H". moments, later ss he turned a left hand corner his front end started to lift toward right. He stopped his vette in middle of road. My dad went around and saw rear brake disc hanging above ground, unscathed. He was at least two things. impressed at corvette frame integrity and balance. How far the wheel landed. Because he spent good 30 minutes looking for the wheel and hand pushed it back. spun it back on, used a rock to smash the spin-off lug tighter. Drove home.

@@patdaveoneil I have to say, the first generation dodge Durango’s with the 5.9 L V8 engine are pretty dependable vehicles. All you have to do is take care of those engines and they can go 300,000 miles. I regularly see Durango’s with those engines that have gone over 300,000 miles. I’m not saying they built as good or better than a Toyota but I am saying they can make some reliable cars. They haven’t made good vehicles that were in the last 10 years.

@@patdaveoneil My 1965 Fury was a nice ride. It's motor still lives, that 383 is powering a different car now, but it's still going! The guy I sold that car to in 1990 tracked me down a couple of years ago to let me know it's still running.

One of the best tips I ever heard: most jugs - like the oil jug in the first tip - are meant to be poured with the spout on the high side. You can get the spout closer and it glugs less.

I once was a passenger in an old 80's Ford Ranger that caught fire going down the road. Oil had just been changed, cap was forgotten. Used dirt and our shirts to put it out. All that needed replacing was the plug wires.

I once drove a Chevy Cavalier for 28000 miles without an oil change. Turns out the oil filter failed. It did get new oil at that point. Drove it another year. I was averaging a Cavalier a year back then. Buy one for $500, put $500 worth of work into it and drive it for a year. I was driving for the local newspapers and was putting 70k miles on a year.

I also learned my lesson taking my 2.7l Sebring (yeah, I know) yo quick change places. They use smaller filters to save money, that get clogged quickly, and within 500 miles, there's already too little pressure to keep the tensioner and lifters tight

Some years ago my mechanic did an engine overhaul on a Saab 96 V4. The customer literally never lifted the hood for the next few years, and the engine ran completely out of oil. Given that this was in Seattle, you'd think the customer would at least have opened the hood to top up the washer fluid.

I used to have a Beetle back in the 70s, and it would go easily through floods. All I had to do is to keep accelerating. Sometimes the wave would almost reach the wind shield. And of course, the water wouldn't come into the car. I'd never dare to do it in a modern car. I wonder what happens with electric cars if they go through floods.

Pour the oil with the spout at the top of the container instead of the bottom so the container can get air. That way it won't go glug glug glug when it pours. 3:21
