Last year I bought a 21,500 mile, 2011 Toyota iQ and read the handbook. The cabin filter cover was hidden under the carpet , just below the passenger’s right knee on the front bulkhead ( right-hand drive ). I had to lie on the floor , with my legs sticking out of the car in order to loosen the cover. The filter came out absolutely filthy. It could not have been changed for years. I put a new Bosch filter in and will check it after 6 months. Though with the small mileage during stay at home, I expect it to be cleanish.Pushing filter back in the slot was difficult, but replacing the cover was the most difficult part of all , for an elderly person.

If they're decent people, they'd just replace it for free during an oil change or tuneup, but I get it if that's all the customer is having done. Their fault for not researching and figuring out how easy it is. I know more IT folks than mechanics. 90% of their issues could have been easily Googled. Clicking a search bar and reading is far less demanding than partially disassembling a glove box.

What scotty means by a "galvanic response" is called *"Dissimilar metal corrosion." Short answer: Metals dont like to mix with one another in solid form. They corrode and rot quickly A more detailed nerdy explanation down below👇 It is a considerably poor fundamental mechanical practice to force different kinds of metals into pressed contact with one another. They have different amounts of particles per atom. Different relative charges to one another due to the different electron quantities. It's the exact same thing as having a static charge. More concentrated electrons. And When they make contact, it does the same thing. But it's a slower and continuous process. Those electrons mix, the atoms start to bond or unbond with each other, or even themselves. This is called "electrolytic corrosion" It's why you don't puncture your car's skin to install something metal without taking EXTREME care. Most car skin is made of aluminum. So if you use an aluminum attachment that contacts the skin, it shouldn't really do anything. But if you use a steel attachment, or brass, or iron, or copper, or whatever else, the mixing of elements in solid form causes all kinds of electrolytic malarky Even just securing a steel bolt with a brass nut or using a brass washer or snap ring will cause this kind of accelerated corrosion. If you HAVE to mix metals, install some kind of plastic or silicon blocker in between. Like a plastic washer. Or if you want metal, use a 2nd washer of the material of the surface you want to protect. That will be your sacrificial washer. It will corrode where it touches the dissimilar metal. But it WILL NOT spread that corrosion to the valuable surface. It's like Jim Bruer's hilarious video on mixing liquors not being a good thing. You legit can approach metallurgy the same way. Just a pro tip for you rookies or intermediates out there. ;)

So, Dave, did I do a terrible thing putting my license plate on my presumably aluminum tailgate using stainless steel machine screws? This is not a facetious question, btw, I’ve had my license plates stolen in rest areas before while traveling interstate; so I’m now in the habit of buying non-standard driver pan-head machine screws (ie not slotted/Phillips head or hex) for my plates. (Next guy who steals MY plates is gonna show up with a 120 piece bit set, at least!!! 😂) So am I inviting rust on to my tailgate by using stainless into aluminum? (With blue LocTite on the threads, if that factors into the equation)

Yes it can make your HVAC work like crap. I had poor heat Jan-Mar when I got my new (34 miles odo) Honda SUV until I pulled out the cabin filter just to see how to do it. It had been parked outside before I got it. The crap that was restricting air flow was seeds from trees. Blowing out the filters with a shop vac fixed the problem. I suggest checking the filter every fall, late spring and after a trip where you drive through a forest or a corn field in the early summer.

Most auto shops offer a pre-purchase inspection, even if they don't advertise it. Here in MN most places charge like 25-30 bucks to go over the whole car and give you a list of anything that is worn/may need replacing in the near future. If you are really interested in a car it's a great investment.. because if they come back and say hey, this is broken or needs to be replaced and it will cost 1k.. you can either walk away from the deal and save yourself a headache, or you can negotiate that information in to the price of the car. And if it comes back all clear, you spend 30 bucks to put your mind at ease about your big investment.

@@goldenTym That's really cheap. Here it's 100-125.
@goldenTym4 жыл бұрын
@@wholeNwon dang. I know some places here that charge that much... Big chain places etc. I always try to find a reputable and reliable privately owned place. Typically they get the job done for half the price and are willing to work with you on stuff. But it can be hard to find a good mechanic these days.

I just did all my filters... Engine air, Cabin air, and oil. Guess I didn't do them all because I didn't do my fuel filter, but maybe I should. I just hit 150k in my 08 Jeep Liberty and I'm trying to do whatever I can to help her stay healthy. I like to use WIX filters.

I changed my cabin air filter, and the date was February 2011 on the old one. I guess it's been over 10 years. I noticed the difference right away. Wow

Easy to do in my car, I change it once a year along with my engine filter. Simple & inexpensive.

I had to put my 2004 pontiac vibe up for the winter at a friend's place as I was away for 4 months. Came back in spring to get it set up. He did keep up with starting it every so often and running it for a bit to keep things from seizing up but when I came back, there was no airflow. Heat took forever to blow through and the blower motor was rumbling like mad. Figured the blower was just bad. Well. Turns out, mice had gotten inside and ate up the filter and made a nest in the blower motor. Fun times. I had to stick the air compressor hose down the vents and blow all the crud they left out. Had to get the stink out of it too from their waste.

One idea is to put down inside the engine bay if you store longterm. Had to do this for our boat after getting chewed wires from barn storage. Only if you dont have a pet that can climb in there! Sometimes cats might try.

lol i did not know these existed in the past and when i finally changed it... the filter was moldy and black!

That is gross lol, I'd be disgusted to know I breathed that air for so long. My buddy found a dead mouse and nest inside his Jeep's blower motor.

When I got my first car, I replaced the cabin filter and when I opened up the compartment to get them out, there was leaves, pinestraw, and dirt absolutely everywhere and the filters were smothered in the stuff. I had to take a vacuum and get my hand in there to get everything out. Guess I got lucky nothing happened to the system.
@alexkokkola4 жыл бұрын
Probably a good idea to check the Cabin air filter every 2 months or so. You can find some really cheap online, and like you said for most cars, it's really easy to find them, so there really is no excuse. Good video Scotty.

I agree with you, Scotty. I did mine during the pandemic, with only forty-some thousand kilometers, it needed replacing.

Just changed mine. I took a picture of before and after and also write the date and mileage on the filter element before i changed it. The reason i change it is because the AC is not blowing enough cold air and also could smell the outside exhaust gas smell from following behind a smoky truck.

If you live in a big city change it every 6 months. In most cars you can change it yourself. Cost at the stealership (in Greece) 35€. Cost Do it your self 7 to 15€ depending what kind of filter you buy.

I have a K&N cabin filter. I was sick of paying for the disposable ones.
@markkauffman61844 жыл бұрын
I have one also, but it will be the last one. By the time you overpay for the original filter then the cleaning kits that you need to use, you don't save any money at all.

I bought a Honda in 2016. When the car reached 30,000, I figured it was time to change the cabin air filter. The amount of dirt and debris in that thing was unholy. I couldn't believe that even the car wasn't quite 3 years old at that time that the filter was so choked up. We also have a 2012 Civic that wasn't blowing very hard anymore. After changing the filter in my car, my partner learned about it and we ordered one for the Civic as well. Said the thing hasn't blown like it does now for a few years! It was the original filter in a car that was 6 years old

I think where they put these filters is a money grab for the dealerships. Most Nissans stick the damn thing in behind the glove box, so that has to be removed to get at them. I get a new cabin filter for about $8. Dealership charges three times that, plus labor for the install. I think I was told it's right around $50. Bit steep for a cheap filter IMHO.

Another thing... I'm a reasonably responsible vehicle maintenance guy. I replaced the cabin air filter, etc. But, I neglected to clear out the exterior grill by the windshield wipers. This grill had become clogged with oak pollen stalks, leaves, twigs, and was literally clogged. Once I cleared all that crap out, my ventilation blower was blowin' again like the dickens...
