Scotty Kilmer so the “inorganic” and “organic” refers to the additives only. After some more reading it looks like the main inorganic additives were “phosphates and silicates” which I’m assuming to be sodium silicate and sodium phosphate (or maybe it was phosphoric and “silicic” acids hence the name “IAT”). The organic additives appear to be sebecates (salts of sebacic acid), 2-ethylhexanoic acid or some other proprietary organic acid. The hybrid one appears to use organic acids but not 2EHA (so I guess this is proprietary?). So, you know that “liquid glass” radiator repair stuff they sell for repairing radiator leaks? It looks like that’s just a concentrated form of the additives the put in “IAT” coolants!

I just went and purchased genuine Toyota coolant “the pink stuff” because I just realised that the local mechanic didn’t do it when I had my car serviced. All my local stores had green coolant. This video reinforces that I made a good choice. I’m dumb when it comes to cars, but you’ve taught me so much!

Scotty is spot on with the coolant. As a ford mechanic, I had a Taurus that kept coming back with a leaking heater core. I replace it 3 times in a year. Came to find out that the electricity it created would corrode the heater cores and eventually cause them to leak. (had to add a ground wire to the recovery tank).

THANK YOU! I'm a proud DIY owner of a Toyota with 155k miles (do my own work thanks to you), and thought it was about time to do fluid. I thought I read in the manual that it didn't need to be changed, but assumed they didn't expect someone like me. This is the best review I've seen by far and I've been searching auto repair forums and am now amazed at how many 'techs' had no mention of this, even when I asked the difference (between the pink and the green stuff). My only question now is if I can find a good alternative to genuine Toyota fluid which is twice as much out here. You gotta be crazy to let these shops touch your car. I started doing my own stuff (again, I did as a kid) because I was tired of the upselling: 'When was the last time you changed out the air in your tires? We recommend that with every oil change'....GONE.

I personally use Zerex G-05 in my car. I also really like to change it far more often than recommended even though it may be a waste. I do a full flush when I first buy a car and then another every 1-2 years depending on how hard its been driven. I just like to make sure the system is clean because I'd rather replace coolant every year or two than hoses, thermostats or water pumps every 5 or so years.

If you want to cause yourself a headache, mix coolant types, I did that in my truck. . . I end up pulling and replacing the radiator out of desperation, flushing the system multiple times, in the WINTER TIME.. just to get my heater going in the truck again. When I went to the auto store, they only had the orange coolant, on the bottle it was "long lasting", I was like what could go wrong? WELL in my truck manual, I read this AFTER the fact,..its like "Only use green coolant".. Ford Ranger Manual, anyways, there was a very valid reason for that. Mixing them, gunked up everything.. *Sighs* what a hard lesson to learn.

You may be a mechanic but you should have known about Evans...... www.evanscoolant.com/. Evans IS the best. No WATER. NO changing. EVER. No Corrosion! Water is the root cause of corrosion in engines, eating away pumps, radiators, liners, etc. Current antifreeze formulations regularly fail to prevent corrosion. Evans waterless coolants prevent water-caused corrosion in a cooling system. The Science of Corrosion When heated, water releases a significant amount of dissolved oxygen, but as it cools it reabsorbs fresh oxygen. This cycle leads to the corrosion of metal, which is accentuated in classic vehicles with no expansion chamber. Water also acts as an electrolyte if dissolved solids-such as hardness salts (lime scale)-are present. This promotes galvanic corrosion, a process in which two metals corrode at different rates, often causing pitting. Other Antifreezes Corrosion inhibitor formulations have changed many times over the years, but not always for the better. Nitrite, silicate, borate and azole based products have been around for many years, with Organic Acid Technology (OAT) inhibitors appearing more recently. OAT formulations are often branded as “long-life” based on their five-year lifespan, compared with one to two years for standard antifreeze formulations. Although OAT-EG-water mixtures are now used in most new car engines, they have proven less successful in older vehicles and heavy duty diesel engines (HDDE). After several years of trying OAT-based products, many HDDE OEMs and fleet operators reverted to nitrite and/or Hybrid OAT (HOAT) formulations. One reason for this U-turn was that OAT formulations offer little protection against liner pitting. To maintain effective inhibitor levels it is often necessary to retro-dose with Supplemental Coolant Additives or SCAs. It is common for SCAs to be under- or over-dosed, leading to accelerated corrosion rates, cylinder liner pitting or the blocking of radiator channels with congealed inhibitor. The Evans Coolant Solution Evans waterless coolants contain little oxygen and are comparatively poor conductors in comparison to water-based antifreeze, so metal corrosion and coolant degradation is eliminated.

In my old Porsche that had a liquid cooled engine, I would use a mixture of Redline's Water Wetter plus distilled water and flush it once per year. This, plus the use of Redline's full synthetic ester-based motor oil, improved the heat transfer in my engine so much that the engine temp would never go above the thermostat temp regardless of the engine load or outside temperature. An added benefit was that it helped cool my oil and keep the oil pressure higher when the engine was at idle. The drawback with this stuff was that the anticorrosive additives would wear out faster in an all-aluminum engine, which I had, and had to be changed more frequently. Also, there was no boiling point elevation or freezing point depression so I couldn't use it in a climate where the temperatures would dip below freezing. This was not a problem since I lived in San Diego at the time. The car had an extremely high-pressure cooling system pressure and so the water's boiling point was sufficiently elevated that it would never boil.

I really hope that people watching this video paid special attention to the "do NOT mix" different types of coolant.... they are NOT interchangeable fluids. I a 30 year veteran of the profession and have seen some horror stories from mixing coolants... mostly from people getting those "cheap" oil changes at those quick-lube, or as I call them quick-butchery shops. (i.e. the coolant solidifying in the coolant passages and plugging up heater cores).
@teravolt61136 жыл бұрын
A supermarket near me only stocks the green coolant. This is a big no-no. It makes most people assume that it fits all cars... i myself got away with mixing GM's Dex-Cool and two other OAT coolants however, but that's because i know what OAT stands for. Most people just don't know and when that overflow tank is low or that light illuminates, they pick the first coolant they can get their hands on and happily pour it inside...

Thank you for the video Scotty, as always appreciated. My 2013 Volvo calls for HOAT however I contacted Peak and Prestone to check with them in order to swap the expensive Volvo coolant to either Peak and/or Prestone (OAT) and they said that there is no problem and it can even be mixed together but preferably one type is best as they have different lubrification package.

Toyota's SLLC pink is an HOAT that contains small amounts of phosphate, not silicates and it has to be changed first after 10 years !!. Some other manufacturer user HOAT that contains silicates (G13 ). Phosphate doesn't combine well with hard water and that's why toyota's SLLC it's available only premixed. Silicates are believed to harm the water pump seal..

@Vladimir Toyota SLLC (Pink prediluted) is definitely a different formula than LLC (red concentrate) that replaces it. You can't use red where the manual calls for pink. It's fine to use pink in everything (except the Toyota and/or Scion cars with Mazda or Subaru engines).

Janice Anmary If you go to Auto zone and buy the kit, it is really easy and self explanatory. I had never done one but the kit helps force out all the coolant hanging out in the bottom of the engine which is critical.

Janice Anmary get couple bottles of Prestone radiator flush and few gallons of distilled water. Drain radiator. Dump 1 bottle of flush in. Fill with distilled water. Drive a week. Repeat with other bottle of flush and distilled water and drive 2nd week. Then drain and fill with coolant and distilled water mixture. As long as its not winter and freezing you can go couple weeks on just distilled water. The antifreeze keeps water from freezing and has rust inhibitors. Doesn't really affect boiling temp.

What about "Evans Coolant"? Water-less, life of the car coolant. I know Jay Leno uses it and loves the stuff since he never has to change it.
@nutz4gunz4576 жыл бұрын
It good for cars that sit for a long time and don't get driven often but it doesn't cool as well as water mixed coolants so there is a higher chance of over heating.
@timramich6 жыл бұрын
Nutz4Gunz45 Jay Leno mentioned that it tends to show it's running warmer because it has better surface tension and thermal conductivity properties, but it won't boil, which is the killer in overheating.
@oldtc28486 жыл бұрын
Evans coolant is garbage. It shows that it is running hotter because it is running hotter. It can absorb higher temperatures before it boils but it is poor at transferring heat compared to water or mixed antifreeze. So it heats up but does not cool down. Tests done show engine block, cylinder head temps all higher. It acts similarly to straight antifreeze. The more antifreeze to water the less heat transfer. Look it up, nothing outperforms heat transfer from straight water. Many classic cars from early 1900's overheat very easy running Evans coolant. Note the engines overheat but the coolant does not boil. kzbin.info/www/bejne/n56vZZ6Hbr1pp5I
@jessegotowork6 жыл бұрын

@salvatoreshiggerino68106 жыл бұрын
I checked the Jay Leno video. It's a scam. The snake oil salesman says you can drink it but won't prove it. And for good reason, it contains ethylene glycol: www.hrpworld.com/store/media/media/manufacturer/evans/pdfs/Evans%20High%20Performance%20Waterless%20Engine%20Coolant.pdf Looks like it's just some variation of OAT or HOAT coolant that they just tell you not to dilute. It won't work very well, just get normal HOAT coolant like Scotty says.

Toyota does say to use a NON- SILICATE, ethylene glycol w/ HOAT technology which is a combination of low phosphates and organic acids. So to my knowledge the "Pink Toyota Super Long Life Coolant" or "Zerex Asian Vehicle Coolant" fits these specs. So i believe you were wrong when you said that the "pink coolant" has Silicates in it as to my knowledge it doesn't. So you might want to correct this statement. (please dont mix up the red coolant with the pink, i was told one is IAT(inorganic acid tech) and the other is HOAT (hybred organic acid tech)

We've had a lot of old cars over the years, but as time went on we have gotten a lot of 90s and 2000s cars recently. Something we found is that when an early 2000s car that requires HOAT coolant looses a little coolant for whatever reason, sometimes the owner, who doesn't know any better, will top it off with the cheapest stuff he can find, ie green inorganic, before he craigslists it or trades it to the dealer. When you mix the green into older HOAT coolant, under certain conditions (and I'm not sure I can specify what those conditions are, but it seems to happen in MOPAR cars a lot that still have the factory coolant in them) under certain conditions the mixture, maybe with a trickle of electricity between two dissimilar metals between the steel radiator and the aluminum block, will cause the silicates in the old HOAT to precipitate out into the cooling system, forming a really fine sand that when wet (conditions common in a cooling system) turns into a sort of grey paste that tends to accumulate in tight places where flow is a little restricted, such as in heater hoses, at the thermostat, in the bottom of the block, in the vanes of the radiator, etc., plugging up the system. The car then tends to overheat, and the more green they add, the worse it gets for a while until its all green. They do all the traditional overheating car things they can, thermostat, water pump, drain and replace coolant (with the green) and then assume it has a bad head gasket but a compression check is still good, and there is no coolant in the oil or oil in the coolant, so they assume cracked block or head and that's when they loose faith in their mechanic and dump the car on craigslist or on some unsuspecting dealer. We didn't know this until it happened to us with a car we got cheap in a three way trade. We had never heard of HOAT coolant, but knew to use the universal coolant. We eventually did a really hard flush and got a little of the paste in the bottom of the pan, and that caused us to research it. The only fix is to completely flush it with clean water to get all of the green out, then put in a light mix of HOAT and water and let it sit, run it enough for it to circulate a little every now and then, and the precipitated silicate paste will re-disolve into the coolant, slowly. Takes a while. Then you replace it all again with new HOAT mix. And the proportion of the mix is sometimes different with HOAT, sometimes 60/40. Read the instructions. And it takes HOAT to dissolve the paste, it wont dissolve in universal. Hope that helps.

i had the whitish precipitates also mixing a small amount of coolant, flushed it inmediately to not harm the seals on the water pump

Good day Scotty One type of coolant you missed on your review is waterless antifreeze. I have a classic car and use that because it's range of operation is much great and reduces corrosion to almost 0 . The down side of this product is its cost but it's a lifetime product. You should also add how to test the PH , acid and alkalinity. Sometimes people change far to often when fluid is good, this is my 2 cents worth.
@claresmith72275 жыл бұрын
Agreed, I use Evens waterless no pressure antifreeze that is basically maintenence-free and doesn't need changing. Evens claims it outperforms today's coolants in many ways. I love not having any coolant issues running a diesel. Not sure why this highend product is not out and spoken of too.
