My 08 Passat 2.0T 190k just broke down today. Broken timing belt. Throughout the years it’s just been nothing but little annoying issues but as far as im concerned the drivetrain itself was dead reliable up until this point. As long as all fluids are topped off regularly and all maintenance performed on time you should be golden. Besides, most if not all modern cars are made cheaper these days.

Hey Scotty! 2018 GTI with the same engine, EA888 Gen3/Revision3. No oil burning, I change my oil every 4-4.5K miles, tranny oil every 40k, sparks every 30k along with all other ancillary maintenance. No issues so far and runs like when I got it new! Oh.. and mine is also made in Mexico! 75k miles so far.

i had a 2019 Jetta GLI, no issues. I never drove off without letting it warm up and even had a stage 1 tune by Unitronic and it did not burn oil after the tune. I traded it in for a 2023 GTI, it also has a Unitronic stage 1 tune and no issues not even buring oil. I change oil after 5k miles.

72 super beetle new 2400 Canadian. Great little car. Super in snow. Easy to work on. Also haad a beater ghia,, a 411 or 417 station wagony thing 25.00, a 92 golf gti and a 94 jetta. No complaints. Learned to do brakes, cluches, timing belts, seals, heater core in jetta (not fun), suspension. All doable at home.

Mine only had heat if you reved the engine if you weren't moving.(in traffic). There were heat tube's that crumbled and heat channels that rusted holes over time. I always had an ice scraper for the inside of the windshield as it would frost over from people breathing. It was great in the snow, and seemed like you could fix any problem for $10 and a 13 mm wrench.

I bought an automatic 2024 Volkswagen Jetta GLI Autobahn trim model at the end of April that looks almost identical to this one. I went from a rusting Pontiac G6 from 2008 to this, my first VW and it was definitely something to get used to. So much tech and modern conveniences with this model and honestly, I absolutely love mine so far. Yes, I'm aware maintenance and repairs won't be cheap but as said in the video, it's super nice to drive and comfortable. I will definitely be getting new tires come winter though. The stock ones are rather poor. Appreciate the take on the car, in any case. Thanks for the video, Scotty.

I don't trust anybody's warranty. It's basically a promise from the guy who made your car that he'll fix the car (at no extra charge) that wasn't built correctly in the first place because they were trying to make as much profit as possible. Not the best foundation for a great relationship.

Well there's more to repair of a vehicle than the cost, there's also YOUR time and effort taking/towing your vehicle for repair, especially if the dealership is not within a convenient distance from your home or workplace. Real question is, is it worth your time and aggravation to deal with a problem vehicle, even under full warranty?

The warranty is only good till 100 thousand miles. Most people will put that mileage on in 7 years. Right after the 100 thousand mile is when it will start breaking down. If a car can't make it to 100 thousand without a extended warranty you should walkway.

Well, there are bigger problems than this. 1) while the car is under repair, you need another vehicle to get around in (unless it's specifically stated in the agreement), so if it's a big job that takes weeks, you're car-less for that time. and 2) oftentimes, they use refurbished engine/tranny components to fix cars under warranty, so that's another possible problem.

Call me frugal or practical or cheap or whatever but as far as a new car I would have bought a Mitsubishi Mirage G4, already comes with a 10 year/100k mile warranty on the powertrain, no extra charge and the car costs $17k new. Of course it's no performance car, in fact it's a lot like driving a sewing machine. But it sips gas and at my age I'm not in a hurry to get 6 feet under anyway.

Factory warranties are the best, to be honest; they come with the car. Many vehicles, particularly luxury ones, are equipped with high-tech components like sensors and cameras, which are susceptible to malfunction over time. If something breaks, it can be costly to repair or fix. That's why we get a warranty. But if you're getting a non-luxury car, such as a Toyota, Ford or something along those lines, then warranties are not really necessary. It all depends on the type of vehicle manufacturer, the car's caliber, and whether it is luxury or non-luxury. BMW, Audi, Mercedes, Lexus, Cadillacs, and Tesla are more than likely going to need a warranty for these cars because they are heavily dependent on the dealer's technicians.

If they start breaking after 10 years then I must’ve gotten lucky with my Jetta. Mines a 2014 Jetta SE with a 1.8 L turbo four-cylinder, attached to a six speed automatic. And I’ve had zero issues with it. And the cherry on top is, I’ve only changed engine oil. Never change, brake fluid, power, steering fluid, coolant, or transmission fluid. And never had a problem.

​@@SF-rs3xm Those motors rarely throw a fit if you change the oil like you do. However, I would get the tranny fluid and the coolant changed. My 2014 tdi had a plugged heater core at 210 000kms when I bought it due to the previous guy not ever changing the coolant.

I've got a 2018 VW Tiguan with the 2.0L TSI EA888 Gen3 B-Cycle engine that has only 31,000 miles on the odometer. No oil issues, thankfully. Oil is changed every six months any way using LiquiMoly.

2008 - 2013 VAG 2.0T engines have issues with the timing chains and piston rings (the reason for the oil consumption). Other than that they are really good and reliable cars. Just take care of your car and keep up with maintenance. That's it. I've been working on these cars, and they're reliable as long as you take care of it. Im Audi master certified, in case you're wondering.

As a multi VW owner I can say the 2.5 engine is fantastic, the brm tdi is fantastic, the cjaa tdi is also fantastic. I do like vw once you understand vw you'll be fine. My 12 tdi cjaa 6 speed gets 54mpg and i only do basic maintenance. The one thing that irritates me is timing belts and the a/c compressor valve that fail. I have complete faith in VW engines. I'm going to go to a VW jetta gaser Auto trans this time .

I’ve owned that 2.5 and I echo that 100%. Don’t sleep on the timing chain service… When you get your new one, just don’t get a mk4/mk5 era auto. They are junk (surprisingly made in Japan - usually Japanese trans are great). The Audi made 5speed box on those old cars will outlast the roaches…. I have 3 1.8ts now with the common timing belt water pump but if you are on maintenance (which even a gorilla like me figured out how to do at home) then they are great engines. I replaced all coolant flanges with metal and my water pump has a metal impeller (Meyle HD). Zero issues.

Bought 2014 Passat new 172,312 miles. ZERO squeaks or rattles. 1.8 EA888 Gen 3 tiptronic trans. Most reliable car Ive owned in my 67 years, including GTI, Honda Pilot, Ford Explorer, Jettas. Note: I use BG products EPR, MOA, 44K 5K oil change intervals Castrol 5W 40 Euroblend 3 coolant flushes, 4 transmission services, 3 brake fluid changes. 2015 GTI here, 187k miles. My PLASTIC intake manifold is dtill holding 32 psi of boost through an EQT vortex XL hybrid turbo. I'm full bolt ons on e85 with multiport injection and thr only issue I've had was my water pump cracked 2x. I drive over 200 miles a day

2019 GLI Autobahn here I bought with 53000 on the clock I’m at a year and 63000 miles and no issues other than a broken sunglass holder. The dealer I bought it from replaced the water pump during the dealer service at 53k miles. This car is the perfect balance of fun and daily driver. It gets phenomenal gas mileage for the performance it offers and really can not be beaten for the price. Favorite car I’ve owned. Went from a focus st and this car is almost as much fun on a back road and a much better car in day to day life.

It could be something like a defective PCV, and not necessarily an internal engine problem like rings. My 2017 GTI with the same engine uses no oil at 57k.

I have a 2018 GTI with over 50K mi. Change oil every 10k mi per manufacturer schedule. The EA888 is really an engineering marvel. It’s not known for burning oil. It is notorious for carbon buildup. After 6yrs I’ve experienced neither problem. “Only” has 220HP but thats plenty. HP is overrated. 258lb/ft of twist is the key, and that’s attainable as low as 1.5k rpm. That’s real word usable practical power.

my 2019 S model got 68k miles and only had to do oil changes cabin engine filter swaps a coolant flush and brake pads and disks replacement andddd soon the serpentine belt but this car has given me ZERO serious problems

I’ve got a ‘16 CC that I absolutely love. It’s in the shop right now for engine/transmission mounts, alternator, and rear brake pads… $3769. It has 123k miles and this is the only thing I’ve had to do to it. Breathtakingly awesome car. Very best car I’ve ever had/driven.

Certainly sucks having to pay that much, but it also has 123k miles on it and this is the first real repair cost I’ve ever had with it. And aside from that, it’s an absolute joy to drive. Scotty wasn’t kidding about the steering, it’s absolutely phenomenal and it certainly zips lol.

I've owned Volkswagens for almost 30 years. Mostly GTis, and the reason I own them is because they are unbreakable. I currently have a tuned Mk6 GTI with over 140 clicks, and the only thing I've replaced that wasn't maintenance parts was a $147.00 intake manifold that was a CARB part that had an emissions valve that blew out..only because it's tuned mind you. And that happened at around the 90k mark. Replaced with the updates Audi intake manifold and still running strong.

All brand new engines will burn oil in the first 10,000 MI now that the EPA is requiring higher miles per gallon manufacturers have to switch the piston rings to low friction piston rings which allows more oil to be burned in the combustion chamber but seeing how Scotty is such a professional and noses stuff he probably forgot to mention that in this video

110k on my 2016 Golf Sportwagen 1.8TSI (turbo 1.8) and zero issues. If you keep the maintenance up on them and change the oil every 5k or less you should be golden.

I own a 2020 model, 30k miles so far and no repairs needed. At 30k miles, I don't expect any repairs needed either. These should be mostly reliable. It's a crap shoot with the water pump though. Some go 100k miles on the original pump, some only make it to 20k...

I owned several VW's and most were pretty decent cars, but I never owned one that was made in Mexico. Every one I owned was made in Germany where the quality was decent IMO. My favorite one was my 1978 Rabbit Diesel with a whopping 48 HP engine. Wasn't very fast but it got 55 MPG on the highway.

Louder than Hell, too, but mine was at least ten years old when I bought it. Reeked of cigarette smoke. Poured coffee grounds all in it and hotboxed that for a couple of days. Gas was just under a buck and I could drive forever. Loved that thing!

Made in Mexico that's why.. My 2012 GTI made in Germany bought it at 75,000 miles and has 113,000 now still runs like a champion. Mind you the clearcoat peeling off on the roof couple of clearcoat bubbles on the hood and rear bumper is going to cost a pretty penny to fix, but all I've had to do is get the oil changed, set of tires and rotation and some little things filters and what not. *knocks on wood*

@@nicksttrs It's not just because it's made in Mexico, it's because it has to be cheap to sell and profit, Scotty said that too. Also, turbo is great, but the engine will wear faster, that's obvious. My Mazda3 2018 is also assembled in Mexico, and I've had 0 problems with the engine, it already has 48,310 miles on it. Major fixes until now: timing belt replacement, new tires, new back brake rotors, 2 front struts. Timing belt and the struts were covered under warranty. I drive that thing "spirited" with sport mode activated 90% of the time.

Furthermore since Corollas are in low supply and high demand, many dealerships have markup and forced pre-installed accessories on it. Here in Dallas, the cheapest Corolla is 25k which ends up being 27k out the door.

My Volkswagen story: I bought an ‘85 GTi brand new…back then they were made in Pennsylvania and I drove that thing until 1999 with a 176k on it. Had two major issues - the heater core went out around 1990 (don’t remember the mileage) and the transmission went out at 156k on a move from Colorado to California - had to tow it back to Salt Lake City and a local V-dub shop dropped a used tranny in it - I flew back from San Jose to SLC to pick it up when the work was done. Other than an oxygen sensor, it was all oil changes and tire rotations. Every time I washed it I had to break out a phillips head and tighten down all the interior trim pieces.

I bought a '21 GTI. NO problems and we're approaching 30k miles. I've done the first 2 recommended 10k oil changes and the engine has been good. Same 2.0 as the Jetta. All were built in Mexico except for the Golf R. So who knows? Keep an eye on oil consumption like all vehicles..

It was even simpler, though - 5 speed manual and no push button start, minimal tech. That said, the touchscreen can be a pain.

I’ve owned several VWs. I am still a fan and still looking to buy a new GLI this year possibly. Thing is there was a 2012 2.0 Turbo Tiguan in my home, and it lasted exactly 10 years running perfectly. One day the turbo died, and replacing it was not worth it. We replaced that with another Tiguan, the newer one with the 1.4 Turbo. I am skeptical about the GLI because it is the 2.0, but still, almost every vehicle is a turbo now so I guess it does not make a difference, and I’ve always liked the GLI

They burn oil new... For sure. Have a 2014 purchased new, so 11 years old this year. 125k miles. Replaced pcv valve at 90k for $100. 1 brake calipur... and brakes rear at 100k and front at 120k. That's it... even with all those plastic parts. Have the 1.8 litre turbo.

Scotty, sorry you got this one wrong. Have 3 VWs including a 15 GLI and I agree they're fun to drive. But none use oil with a cumulative mileage of 200K on the 3, none have had any failures vice one on only the GLI, and in 9 years other than routine oil/filter changes and a battery change at 7, yes 7 years, and a single O2 sensor at 8 years that took me 15 min to replace, zero issues. Nothing is falling apart, plastic or otherwise, everything works as the day I bought them. Seems like you really like it...that's great but they're only unreliable if you abuse 'em...and that will hold true for any car.

Parts are plastic on turbo charged cars to reduce heat soaking in the engine bay. Aluminum and iron holds heat longer and hotter than plastic does. Also cheaper to replace. I have a 2012 stage 2+ golf r and it’s been the most reliable vehicle I’ve owned. It’s been stage 2 since 2013. VW’s are very reliable but just like any brand they have their good and bad models/years.

I’m a vw tech these engines are very reliable don’t see many engine go out or turbos burning oil is not usally and issue on the newer engines post 2015 older version of this engine burns oil but not the evo3 tiguans do have oil burning issue but very rare cause by bad valve stem seals

I have the similar 2 year old engine and it doesn't "sip" oil. If you red line engines or over rev in gears of course there's something going to go wrong. Judging by his MPG he's doing that..
