Scotty, I'm now 50 but also owned a new 2002 red SVT Focus just like this one in Montana. It was simply a blast to drive- perfect 50/50 weight distribution, the Cosworth-tuned engine had a lovely flat torque curve, and the Getrag 6-speed transmission pulled in every gear. I remember driving my mom over the Beartooth Pass Highway down to Cody, Wyoming in this car one summer. With twisty bends rated at 15 mph that I took at 35 mph due to the excellent suspension, I don't think my "co-driver" mom has ever forgiven me for the car sickness that resulted. Anyway, I ended up selling the car after about 4 years as the low ground clearance even with studded snow tires on all fours wasn't conducive to Montana winters and the exhaust was a bit too loud and drowning on long Interstate drives out here. Still, an immensely fun car and your video brought back great memories- this car was sold as the ST170 in England. What I wanted was the Focus RS of this era use by the Ford World Rally Team that we Americans couldn't get! THAT was the car I wanted...;)

I have to say, I'm thoroughly impressed with my Focus. 2004 SE Wagon 5-Speed Manual (Wagons with SE trim were sold to fleets, most Wagons are actually ZTW) 2.0L Zetec I4 turns around 130HP at the crank gets 28.5 MPG Combined, UP TO 36mpg Highway. Usually actually gets 32.4 highway. Clutch lasted 183,000 Miles. I just replaced it 2 weeks ago. I've owned the car for 34,000 Miles/19 Months. I paid $1300 for it (it is a reconstruct, it was previously totalled and repaired) and I've put that into repairs in the entire 2 years I've had it - Most of it 2 weeks ago for the clutch, brakes, and the upcoming tuneup once the insurance company that rear ended me last weekend decides what we're doing with the $1000 bumper repair job. There's another one near by that's for sale for $2800 - They are high on the price, but it has a new clutch and had some engine work done after my first test drive with it (with another car dealer) showed it had several hundred dollars of work needed done. That dealership went under and a repair shop got the car to sell. That one is a ZTW with the same exact engine and transmission

I was going to purchase the Focus RS, but at the time (Jan 2016) the car had not entered production yet and I was coming off a lease. The Focus ST is a great driver's car, with good handling and adequate power, for negotiating city and highways with ease. In hindsight, the early RS hade some issues with the motors blowing and of course the ridiculouas dealer ADM markups. The Focus ST doesn't have the same attitude and grunt as my 2008 BULLITT Mustang, but it's the best balance of practicality and fun ....the definition of the hot hatch experience. It's been completely bullet proof (with one exception). It has needed work on the sills and offside wheel arch but then rains a lot and when it's icy they dump salt on the roads. The exception is the IRMC box the car is on it's 4th or 5th box. Someone on the facebook can bring it back to life for a fraction of what a new Ford part costs. I still enjoy driving the car and it's fast enough for roads in the UK where speeding detection devices proliferate. I am still looking for and finding them here in Florida for sale for either restoration or parts if beyond restoring. Yes I do agree with Scotty they are a hidden gem among the bad apples of the base ZX3 models and very fun to drive. Not signed up here to post videos as of yet but will do so to document work on them as I complete each.

I have 2, 2004 130k and 2003 170k, original engines (timing belts around 100k), original transmissions (130k still on original clutch] They have their quirks and squeaks but other than a alternator failure in 2013 I have never been left stranded by either and I’ve had the 2003 since 2008.

Hi Scotty. I pretty much agree with all you say, I really do. But........the Mk1 Focus is so well built, they hardly rust at all. Even in England they don‘t. And where I am, in The Netherlands, they are still around by the thousands. They’re getting old now but the RS versions are very sought after, that good those things were. Probably the best Focus ever build. Greetings from Hekelingen, Holland. Bye, Willem.

Hey, Scotty, what are you doing with my car? :) That was my first reaction when I saw the red SVT focus on the jack. Of course, mine is '04, not '02, it doesn't have the antenna (somebody stole it while parked, and I figured not to buy another one because it could be stolen again), has the wheels and HID headlights from the European package, as well as leather Recaros, but other than that it's very much the same. I've got as far as 35-36 mpg in it, but chances are that nobody else will. It was in summer, returning home after a long day's work, not really feeling like driving (more like cruising), A/C off, cruise controlled 50 mph on the highway. However, if I do 70-75 on the highway, I still get around 30 mpg. Handling and steering feel alone are worth all the other troubles this car may have. You are absolutely right about it being a little hidden jewel. Definitely a much better car than the Civic SI and VW GTI of that era.

I have the 2002 Ford Focus ZX3 with Zetec 2.0 engine with 176k miles. Solid engine and transmission. I love it. It's a tastefully designed car. Mine barely has any rust issues. The bottom looks like it was just made a couple of years ago.

When I lived in England I drove Mark 1 1999 Ford Focus Estate (station wagon in US speak). It was the most reliable car I ever owned. The Zetec 1.8 engine was a very good design. It also had an amazing capacity for cargo. It carried an arcade machine with the trunk closed, and would often haul a double bed and all my things back and fourth to uni all in one go.
