Hey Scouter Stan! This is a comment from Troop 1776 in Tennessee, we love your videos our troop started out watching you about 4 years teaching our first years about knots and have used that video every time we have scouts join or need help with knots. At that time we only used that video and a couple others. Now we have a, what we call a "Scouter Stan Addiction" every time we meet we watch your newest video if you have uploaded in that timeframe. From Troop 1776, Thankyou Scouter Stan!!!!

I’m a proud Eagle Scout. I really wish there was a patch that was sanctioned for adults to wear on a hat, jacket, etc. I no longer wear a uniform and even if I did, most folks wouldn’t understand what the knot patch represents. This could let us display our pride and offer an opportunity to spark conversations between Scouts and others that may be interested in getting involved. I totally get mandating the uniform to comply with standards. That’s cool. However, please give us this. Don’t be so draconian. We are the ambassadors of Scouting. Or at least we could be.

Greetings fellow Eagle Scout. Many beautiful pins and hat devices can be worn. If you are not a registered Scouter at this time, you are not obligated to the uniform guidelines. The National Eagle Scout Association ( nesastore.org ) has wonderful patches and pins for civilian or off duty wearing. My son is a third-generation Eagle Scout and I take great pride in wearing the Eagle Dad pin whenever I can. Be proud that you were in Scouting end achieved the Eagle rank. Just wearing the small BSA floridly pin will often get the conversation started and hopefully some recruiting. Thank you for subscribing. YIS ⚜🦅

In the military a lot of uniform regs are managed at the unit level... When I was scouting it was customary, at least from what I saw, for adults to wear their actual earned eagle rank in place... The message it sent to me was "if you make it this far it's FOREVER"... and the spec ops guys wear whatever they think best suits the mission.... Naturally I'm comparing eagle scouts to special ops.... I do love the channel 👍 👍. Scouting should be as mandatory as school...

Position 4 on the flag sleeve (right) is where the Amateur Radio Operator rating strip would appear. While the Morse code interpreter strip is still in production, the rating strip is not - but there are a slew of them out there, and many hams have supply that they often give away. Also - if you haven't done one of these uniform videos on the green Venturing field uniform, that would be an interesting one, as would the Sea Scout uniform history.

Thank you so much for your input. It's always been a mystery to me about the amateur radio operator strip. I couldn't find any information about it anywhere on the Internet. It is so hard to find any information about uniform badge placement. It took me almost a year of research to put together the scout uniform video, and there was a lot of reference material used. I can't imagine how difficult it would be to do a venture or sea scout uniform video. There is a backburner category for subjects like this on the whiteboard that is carried over every season in case there is Newly found information. Thank you so much for the suggestion. YIS⚜

Totem chip and firemen chip are temporary patches and are worn on the right pocket, not the flap. Only the OA flap goes on the pocket flap.

They should really change the design of the patch to quash the confusion. I mean it's shaped like a pocket flap= sew on the pocket flap. Personally, I think the fire em and tote'n chit patches should just go away and just use the cards the scouts carry to signify that they have learned these skills. That "temp" area is just too full of options. Or if you MUST keep it put in on a dongle like camporee patches that signify it's mobility.

@@lwalters8954 One of the optional places that the Totem Chit patch can go is on the back of the Merit Badge sash. I have noticed this at some Court of Honors where the back of the sash had all of the awards from STEM, Supernova, and conservation awards. This is also a place for the Paul Bunyan award, miles hiked or nights camped badges. There are companies out there that do sell a plastic dongle that will accommodate most patches. I've seen this also used for the rank position patch. Sorry I did not reply earlier your message was lost deep within the message string and I missed it. I hope this was helpful if not too late. YIS⚜

As a scout, I earned a special council badge called a Zero Hero. Wherever we went, we were the only ones that had that Temporary Insignia badge. Now I'm a new leader. Can I wear that badge somewhere? It's a conversation starter.
@ScouterStan
@ScouterStan 2 жыл бұрын
I believe the Zero Hero badge that I'm familiar with was a tab that went below your patrol patch. The one I remember up in Wisconsin was small, dark blue with bright white letters. This was awarded to patrols that participated in or staffed cold-weather camping. You could put it with your patrol patch or in the temporary space on the pocket. It would look kind of strange if it was by itself though. There are other variations of the Zero Hero patch/badge that was temporary use. Hopefully, this answered your question. I'm all for patches that inspire conversation. YIS⚜

Hey Stan I just wanted to correct 1 tiny thing in this video, Powderhorn is a exception from the it is a training program of some sort I don't know I actually didn't know about it until I was camping a few weekends ago and I saw it on a leader's uniform in all my years of shouting I've never heard of it

Hey Brice, Powderhorn is a big mystery to a lot of people. In general, Powderhorn is the leadership training for Venture Scouting. The adult uniform has a button on both flaps of the pockets. Typically Powderhorn is a metal pendant that dangles from the left pocket flap. To my knowledge, it is the only item to be hung from this button on an adult uniform. I think I might have mentioned this in the most current video What's Is That On Your Uniform? kzbin.info/www/bejne/d5bRY4KbYteljK8 Thank you so much for contributing to our conversation about uniforms. It seems to be a very popular subject on KZbin and I plan to do more videos. YIS⚜

Hi Scouter Stan! Are there any patches that can be worn on the left pocket of an adult Scoutmasters uniform shirt? The position where the boys rank would be. Thanks.
@ScouterStan
@ScouterStan Жыл бұрын
Normally the left pocket below the flap is not used on adult uniforms. There are some exceptions to that general rule. Only dangles are allowed, patches & badges are not sewn onto the pocket. For most adult uniforms you will need to sew a button underneath the flap to attach allowable dangles to the left pocket area. Some uniforms will have this button already sewn on in this space which causes some confusion. The Powder Horn metal dangle can be worn here permanently. There are some Wood Badge and Troop Leader dangles that can also be in this space temporarily. Although normally this space is left vacant on the adult uniform. Thank you so much for the question. Hey stan, I was wondering if you could wear your cub scout religious cub scout square-knot patch in boy scouts? can you also be in Venturing Bsa and Sea scouts at the same time?
@ScouterStan

Yes, the religious Youth Square Knot is worn over the left pocket. No matter when it was earned it should be on the uniform. Because you moved into Scouts BSA, you didn't suddenly “un-earn” it. This youth knot can be earned multiple times and the knot has devices to distinguish it. Yes, youth can be members of multiple scouting units with one registration fee. Keep in mind that each unit has additional activity fees. Remember that a _Scout is Courteous_ , and other units need you as much as you want them. How do I add a temporary patch that doesn't have a loop?
@ScouterStan
@ScouterStan Жыл бұрын
Temporary patches can be sewn on the right pocket below the OA flap. The word temporary is interpretive as far as the length of time that is usually left to the person wearing the patch. Some scouts and scouters will put their favorite patch on the pocket and put dangles with a loop in front of it. You can also add a loop to the patch to wear it as a dangle. I think the scout shop also has a clear plastic dangle you can put the patch in. Thank you so much for the question. YIS⚜

The OA 50th Anniversary Award patch goes on the sash just above the arrowhead. This award was only available to be earned in 1964. This is the first of three patches that are allowed on the OA sash. New scouter, but old scout here. I truly have loved watching your videos while trying to “catch up” to todays standards and I’m excited to share all the great mysteries and achievements with my scouts. I have browsed around and can’t seem to find much info on the Brownsea strip. I attended this back in the early 90’s and aside from some other small moments- at my age its seems my memories of my week there are held most dear- they are certainly the ones I still have recollection of. Is there an appropriate place I could display my strip? Whether on the uniform, pack, or epoxied into a walking stick, I just want future scouts in my pack to see it and begin asking those questions and stoking the fire. And thank you for such a great resource. YIS

The Brownsea Junior Leader strip goes under the unit number. Thank you for asking, it’s nice to have Scouters promoting youth training like the old Brownsea and today's NYLT. Your training as a youth had no exploration date, so wear it with pride. When Scouts start asking about it, tell them about how Brownsea predates NYLT and that they need to sign up for NYLT right now. I'm so glad you like the channel here on KZbin. Let me know if you got any great ideas that you think should be covered here or have any questions. YIS⚜

That is a really good idea. I have an opening in mid-May and I've already started putting in a working title “Pandemic Scout Leader Training”. Focusing on the differences between in-person and online training. Most of the scout leader training is done online already. However, most leaders prefer in-person live training. Sometimes this is necessary especially for Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills (IOLS) and Wood Badge. This would be a nice addition to the pandemic scouting playlist. kzbin.info/www/bejne/jH3If4l_m8Z6pck Thank you so much for the suggestion. YIS ⚜

What do you mean about venture patrols next to interpreter strips. Could you go into more detail about that and what a venture patrol is?
@ScouterStan
@ScouterStan 3 жыл бұрын
Venture patrols were originally older Scout patrols that were able to do events and activities that the younger Scouts couldn't. In the early 2000s, this was promoted within Troops. Since that time it has been phasing out slowly. It is easier to join a Venture Crew than to stay within the guidelines of a Troop. Today there are very few Venture patrols within a Troop. It was quickly discovered that placing older Scouts away from younger Scouts in a Troop causes issues. Often the older Scouts age out from the Troop leaving a gap. It has been found that it's better to mix old and young Scouts together, within patrols so that more experienced Scouts can help teach and keep balance within the patrol system. The Venture Crew uniform can also be the standard Scouts BSA Troop uniform with the addition of the Venture Patch. Even though some variations are still being used this would be the proper placement of this particular patch. Many older Scouts are very interested in joining a Venture Crew. Older Scouts are often put into leadership positions that required them to repeat training for basic Scout skills. They are looking for an outlet to do more with what they know or maybe an outlet that is less burdensome. Older Scouts should be encouraged to participate in the Order of the Arrow (OA) or joining a Venture Crew in addition to the Troop. Retaining the older Scouts is a big issue whether it be a Venture patrol, Order of the Arrow, or dual membership in a Crew. All too often finding balance within the unit is the successful way. I debated whether to include the placement of the venture patch in the video, to begin with as it is confusing and being phased out of troops. It was decided that since it is still relevant with Venture Crews to be included. Thank you so much for your inquiry and for subscribing to our community. YIS ⚜

Good evening, I just became a Den Leader (Lions). Got the uniform and I am having too much fun with it. My question is about your military unit patch. Can I put a unit patch there as well? I am currently 12 years into my Army career and would like to represent my military service in the BSA as well. Is there a regulation that the BSA uses for uniforms? Thank you for your passion for the BSA.
@ScouterStan
@ScouterStan 3 жыл бұрын
There are two optional areas for temporary patches. The primary optional area is the right pocket under the flap area. Most shirts have a button under the flap that will dangle a patch in this space. Patches can be sewn onto the pocket if it has no loop. The World Conservation and Totin’ Chip patches are often sewn on in this area. The second optional area is the patrol patch area on the right sleeve. Patrols can change over time and are often thought of as temporary. The patrols are also given a wide range of patch options. On my uniform shirt, I’m a member of the Griffen Patrol witch is my district recruiting team. The patch was gifted to us by our DE at the time. He was in the US Army Reserves and ended up with a bunch. The Griffen Patrol recruited for 8 years under this patch and it's changing the patch at the end of this year. In regards to your military service recognition, I would recommend the patch be put in the temporary right pocket area. It will get better visibility if sewn on the pocket and other temp patches dangle over it from time to time. Remember to use discretion as to the scout appropriate design on non-scout patches. Avoid any trademarks that could be interpreted as an endorsement. Thank you for your military and scouting service. YIS⚜

They should stop putting the adhesive on the back of patches. It just falls off. Had my rank fall off at an event. Council patch is falling off now, and it was just ironed on.
@ScouterStan
@ScouterStan 2 жыл бұрын
Most patches in the United States are not iron on. The plastic back on the patch is meant to be flexible when washed and does not act as an adhesive when heated onto the fabric. There are companies out there that use adhesive that will hold a patch for several washes but not forever. I would only recommend using this on things that are not washed often like merit badge sashes. For everything else, nothing beats needle and thread. It's not that hard to do and even easier to teach young people to do. Everyone should be able to sew on a button or a patch as a basic skill. Good luck in getting your patches attached. YIS⚜
