I’m a second generation Marine. My dad was in from 38-46 and served in the South Pacific but never talked about it. I was in from 68-70 and was stationed at Chu Lai 68-69 1st MAW. He passed before I hit 17 and didn’t get to see me join. But I know I love watching these men drill and I know my dad would have loved it too.

Salute for the USMC Silent Drill Platoon. I bear witness they are beyond words. The precision and dedication is in their blood. I will never forget in the 80s witnessing one of their own who previously served with them and was no longer active duty due to being blind and missing a portion of his arm due to combat in Vietnam. The Marine was a twice awarded Purple Heart recipient. There were a number of burly vets who barked a demand for the audience to stand at attention with hats removed and absolute silence. Did everyone comply? You bet they did. The Silent Drill Platoon entered while following the lead of their fellow Silent Drill Platton brother who marched in precision cadence and conducted an inspection and rifle toss to perfection! After witnessing their performance more especially the dedication of the disabled Vietnam Vet finish their drill and exit the audience was in awe and even more moving was watching grown men and women in tears. A number of them held a strong salute all the while during the performance or were at attention. A Gunnery Sergeant read off the accomplishments of the Vietnam Nam veteran who sought to perform with his Silent Drill Platoon and when he finished gave instructions for the audience to attend to their seats. There was absolute silence for at least a few minutes before tipoff of a Marquette University Basketball game.

My high school JROTC was( not sure if still have it) a Marine JROTC. We had three drill teams. The girls team, men's normal drill team, and the exhibition team where did this kind of stuff ( with out the bayonets). My sophomore year we went silent. Our trophy case was bigger then all our sports teams cases combined. We where beating colleges and military academies. Hard work and dedication. Ten days after graduation I was in boot camp. MCRD Santiago platoon 1070 1985.

As a Marine myself, I watched both the M.C drill team and the Army's and it's like comparing a HS football team to an NFL team. No comparison at all🇺🇲🇺🇲🇺🇲
@jacksonreese17
@jacksonreese17 2 жыл бұрын
They have different styles, rifles, uniforms and part of the reason the M.C silent drill platoon is so precise is because they basically do the same thing over and over again. So does the Army, but not to the extent the the M.C does. Also, a little bird told me that Marines have a little bit a pride in the Corp, so. I think you might have a little bit of bias. All that said, if you’re still looking for a Military Branches drill team to rag on, I suggest the CG.
@DzHarryNuttz
@DzHarryNuttz 2 жыл бұрын
@@jacksonreese17 The silent drill team in the M.C is an MOS along with the band. That's what they do for 8hrs a day, 5 days a week and it's almost impossible to get into. When I seen the Army, they were dropping their rifles and wasn't as in sync as the Marines. The Army was good to watch and they were good, but the Marine Corps were on a whole different level than any other branch!
@throttlemccrackin1877
@throttlemccrackin1877 Жыл бұрын
@@DzHarryNuttz The band is its own thing completely. SDP is composed of Infantry Marines, they are selected in boot camp and given an opportunity after they complete School of Infantry to try out. If they make it, they do a 2 year tour then move on to the Fleet Marine Force. At least thats how it was when I was in the Corps, one guy in my boot platoon actually made it! I am from the D.C. area, and I met up with him a year after boot camp on a 4 day weekend and got the .05 tour. They also still go to the field and do miserable grunt things, and are required to do all the annual training like every other Marine.

Ironically for being called "Silent," the synchronized sound is one of the ways of telling how good they are. They are *milliseconds* apart. If you were asked to make a sound with your left and right hands simultaneously, you wouldn't be this close. These are 24 different people who often can't see each other.

You know what gets me is the contrast. Look at all the entertainment displays behind these Marines. Loose , undisciplined, decadent and then look at and listen to the crowd. They do not even realize the significance of what they are seeing. Team work, discipline, Esprit de corps , sacrifice. As a veteran myself this makes me think, " How long are we going to last like this as a country?" We are deep s--t my friends and most people are too busy staring at their cell phones or should I say self phones to notice. God deliver us.

My Dad is a Vietnam Vet and he showed me the silent drill platoon when I was a kid. I was in awe. I'm 47 now and I'm still in awe. You are so right, the undisciplined crowd is watching a trained UNIT. The very demonstration of selflessness. They are one. They are harmless to the US, her citizens and the US Constitution, but they are feared around the globe as the most ready, capable and motivated professional fighting force this Earth has ever seen. Like my Dad always said, "First to go, last to know." I was a deputy sheriff for 15 years but I still regret not joining the USMC after high school. I'll never know if I had what it takes. God bless the USMC.

Thank God the Joint Chiefs of Staff were going to resign en masse if Trump hadn’t stepped down after the January 6 th Insurrection. Hope no one else in the upper ranks of the military would of been willing to take a quick promotion. I agree that we need to show more respect to each other in this country. We need to respect and remember those who gave their last measure to preserve our Democracy. I know there is a strong pull toward Trump within the military. I just wish those people would take a hard look at what he really represents. I’ll step off my soapbox now. What a fantastic display of discipline !

Doesn’t matter what it is. It’s very satisfying to watch somebody who has taken the time to be very f***ing good at their job.

I am proud to say my son is in that platoon, they drill for long hours during training to learn the routines and twirling a m1 garland that weighs around 10 pounds is far more physically taxing than it looks.

Bad a$$ is an understatement for these troops! 21 years retired military with time served as an honor guard leader and this gave me chills looking at it!

All respect for and to the Marines. We owe our freedom to the military. I think that the Army Silent Drill team is amazing too. It's also awesome to see the Army at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.
