It is the worst torture I could ever imagine. I remember talking to a very old WW2 vet. He was 101 at the time. I, of course, was a kid who thought living forever would be cool, so I asked him how it was being so old. He said, “Imagine burying your children, your grandchildren, all your friends, your entire generation.” Oof. I remember walking away from thinking it wasn’t as cool as I thought. I don’t want to die, but someday I will. I’m good with that.
@ceinwenchandler4716 Жыл бұрын
The first halfway decent story I ever wrote was basically about an immortal going insane as she lived through about four generations. For the first century or so, it didn't cause her much trouble.Sure, it was weird and guilt-inducing as her husband grew old while she remained physically young, and it was definitely concerning when her children started appearing to be older than she was, but for the most part, no problems. Then her whole family died off, because time is a jerk like that. She got to watch, still young and healthy herself, as her *children* grew old, went through the yearslong decline of Alzheimer's, and died. It messed her up pretty badly for a while, but eventually she managed to pull herelf together, start another family, and move on with her life. And for a while, things were okay. And then it all ended in the exact same tragedy. Imagine giving birth to a child, seeing them as a baby, and then not having aged a day by the time that same person can no longer remember the names of their own siblings or breathe on their own. But she was resilient. She managed to start over once again, a third life of sorts. And because she can't go without close human connection, she did start another family. (I know that seems insane to some people, but it was the most important thing in the world to her.) This time, things didn't go so well. The cracks in her psyche were beginning to show. She was paranoid and overprotective about everyone she cared about, and her death anxiety probably messed up her kids. She tried to hide it, but once you get to a point where you look at your five-year-old daughter, and all you can think about is the fact that one day, she will die, and you will be there to see it, and you will be just as helpless to stop it as you were the last dozen times, it shows no matter what you do. The inevitable happened once again, and as always, she started over. This time, she was downright deranged. She was terrified of taking the slightest chance of losing anybody and she didn't even try to hide it - with the result that she effectively lost some of her children very early. The left, walked out of her life. They couldn't handle her behavior and it's really hard to blame them. The inevitable happened one last time. Once again, she had to bury her youngest child alone. And this time, instead of picking herself up and starting over, she snapped. What followed was a very violent couple weeks during which she tried everything she could think of to kill herself. She was not successful. The ending is basically the ending of "I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream" (the short story, not the game). She ends up crawling into a corner, curling up and losing herself in her own thoughts, having finally given up. She never moved again, although she certainly remained conscious until the sun went nova. So, uh... I guess if you needed another immortality related horror story... If you actually got this far in the comment, thanks. If not, I don't blame you.

The shy guy is an interesting one because there’s a 3rd possibility of him just giving up. When he fought 682 he eventually gave up and refused to fight despite having his face seen, it’s possible that you could Zapp Brannigan your way into pacifying 096 by throwing wave after wave of D class personnel at him until he basically just says fuck it. That testing would be best done in someone else’s dimension 😂 If all the clones don’t share simultaneous memory you could technically just make a bunch of clones over a long period and then without the original ever coming in contact with 096 it might loophole it’s way into surviving, it may be the same “person” so to speak, but having not seen his face there’s no reason why 096 would target the original with no memory since his ability to sense who has seen is anomalous. Or a third option would be to send in a clone that is 100% blind and just…see what happens. If the eyes were surgically removed you can’t see his face so would 096 react violently? I doubt he has the mental capacity for friendship, but if anyone could potentially interact it would be an immortal being in a blind host

Everyone talks about immortality as some kind of torture but that only depends on how boring you are. You could spend decades just watching how a river flows as it dries up and floods. As it changes courses and affects the environment around it. You would have access to infinite information and beauty and the assurance that it would never run out. Imagine spending life times with hundreds of people and examining and loving the quirks that are unnoticeable to a mortal. You could love and enjoy life on a scale imperceptible to man.
@t34r2 жыл бұрын
Well yes but no. You are missing a very important detail. YOU would be immortal but humanity not. That means you will life long enough to see humanity die out. This doesn't need to happen over night. Even if humanity would last millions of years or even billions, YOU would outlive it. So you would live long enough to see the end of humanity and continue to live on knowing that all this glorius days will never come back until the sun of the planet you would be at this point finally dies and puts you out of your misery. From my point of view this would be a fate far worse than death ever could be but I'm just speaking for myself.

@Metalchemist22 жыл бұрын
Quick note on the whole "time-travel" thing. Most people can't coexist in the exact same point in time. Jack Bright being an exception as the necklace prints a copy of himself creating a new being that is essentially the same. As seen from other files of the SCP foundation there IS a soul extractor showing that there is in fact a soul or essence that resides within the body. The question therein now lies, can one soul of differing ages exist in what quantifiably might be the same time or would the mere presence cause an implosion or ripple across time to wipe out one/both existence(s). On the off chance that the aforementioned assured destruction might happen, would you risk it or would you simply leave clues behind in a prior place in time to happen at a specific point? Another thought is that you might actually succeed in your endeavor... However, you go into the past of another reality therefore keeping the goal of coming back but abandoning yourself whilst doing so creating the paradox of success whilst causing yourself to become dejected and never attempt it in the first place. Random theories aside, should I come under the same curse as Jack Bright I would most likely imprint onto various animals and keep watch over my family as time passes on. Make sure they're ok.

Dr. Bright in a nutshell: "wanna see me die? wanna see me do it again?"
@raisoho70872 жыл бұрын
Man these are a range of uses. If I were unfortunate enough to be eternally stuck in a medallion that clones my consciousness I would likely make a few clones of myself to become absolute masters of individual studies of all kinds, learning more and more and more until eventually us as clones start an enormous project on whatever we decide on, and make a 1:100 man army of Me's collaborating on the ultimate project. Kind of like a few of the responses in the video, may not be original but it's definitely my preferred immortal plans.

Thing is, If I recall, The Foundation ends up killing Jack Bright...like what? Every 2 months or something like that? The man (or woman) goes through a lot of bodies. All because the Foundation doesn't really know what his (or her) upper limits are with the Amulet. After all. Anyone who wears the Amulet ends up becoming another Jack Bright. In turn, if Jack wanted to and it is written in the list of "Things Dr. Bright Is Not Allowed To Do", he could make a clone army of himself. Worse yet make porn starring him/her. *somewhere the Foundation is Collectively Screaming 'No!'* I think I just thought up an XK-Class End of The World Event lol.
@EsotericDrifter2 жыл бұрын
I think the porn thing is on the list of things he can't do
@Qardo2 жыл бұрын
@@EsotericDrifter Yes, I am aware of that. But being this is the SCP Foundation. There is another version of Dr. Bright that is about to do it right now. And the world is going to end. Later that video tape will show up in "Prime" Foundation hands and be almost like "The Ring". You watch it and in seven days end up going insane and dying. Unless you are Jack Bright. He would likely laugh his ass off.
@Mizukisu_2 жыл бұрын
The "killed every month" thing has been "cancelled" now it's just that when (s)he dies of natural causes or if (s)he gets killed (s)he's to be given a new body.

If I were in Bright’s shoes, I’d learn how to make a copy of the 963 medallion and give it to someone else I really care about who wants to live forever and implant their soul into the 963 copy, so that way I’d have someone else to spend immortality with. I’d also probably check what would even happen if there was more than one copy of 963 on exactly one host body.
@AngelArcher172 жыл бұрын
I think an O5 (maybe O5-9) tried making a copy of 963 for themselves. This copy became known as 963-2, it works like the original however when the wearer dies and is transferred to a new body they’ll only remember the most recent memories. So after every revive the wearer has to go through a crash course of important events and info of their life up until their most recent death.

Well considering that the medallion needs to somehow come into contact with a living being before it transfers consciousness, I'd work on ensuring that the amulet will always have a body to attach to first. Most likely with clones of myself ready in tubes. Like at SCP-2000. Then I'd figure out how to make an indestructible body, maybe turning the amulet into a walking metal me that could transfer consciousness at will. Then, well I'd have all the time to do anything, and not worry about getting stuck lying around until someone was able to touch the damn amulet. Honestly, it's a good this Dr. Bright works for The SCPF, or he (the amulet) would probably be stuck in a box!

How does Dr Bright's clones memories work? Is the one with the medallion the only one who's memories gets passed? Or is he a hivemind conscience? Maybe only the newest clone gets passed on and the older ones are redundancies that have veered off his own memory timeline. If it's not a hivemind i feel like that could bring clones jealousy of who's the original and gets to continue living when they get a new body.
