There was another episode of "Scrabble" from around 1989 or so where a contestant asks for a letter to be placed. It was a correct letter, but the sound effects guy accidentally made the Stopper sound effect and Chuck said he (the sound effects guy) was drinking that morning.

Looks like they are changing the consolation prizes for those who don't win money in the Crossword rounds.

Assuming the date the poster provided is accurate, Hollywood Squares would have been cancelled around this time, so it makes sense they could once again provide prizes to another show and stay on budget (remember they furnished wardrobe for John Davidson, and wouldn't be surprised if parting gifts were also included, though I think they had regular fee plugs).
