My top tip for any one getting in to scrapping, *don't throw away any sort of screw, nut or bolt, a scrap yard will pay by the bucket as its known as prepared steel, brass, ect but my point is making money was never easier

Do the nuts, screws and bolts need to be separated by their metal type?

I tend to break everything down so it fits better in a trailer and also I can take more weight so I always have a lot of screws nuts washers and bolts somebody asked me one time why do you waste your time I tell him cuz I normally bring in 200 lb of small metal that fit in 5 gal buckets even at $7 per hundred pounds that's $14 it cost me $7 to drive my truck and trailer to the scrap yard so it pays for my gas and put $7 in my pocket🤠

That big plug is a ground fault circuit interrupter, and it's likely from a 240 volt package terminal air conditioner - PTAC. Most likely from a hotel or apartment building. The wires are shielded on the outside with what looks like copper netting(it's braided), so not only is there easy to strip large guage wire, there's yet more copper as the shielding. It's exactly like the outer shielding you see on coax cable, just not tin plated. The GFCI plug will have brass and there will be silver contacts inside.

@@iScrapApp Usually the PTAC fails before that interrupter does. The number one reason they fail is maintenance guys getting water in them when they spray out the unit. Most hotels older than 10 years have these A/C units in them. They're often tossed when they're easy to fix. But I would say they're not a very salable item, but other PTAC parts are.

Hello Tom. When I take in wire to the scrapyard it's all scrap copper wire, not one singel plug or connector. Scrapyard buys scrap wires and not plugs and connectors. I have been using the same yard for years now and they don't even brother to check my scrap wires as they know it's clean,, that means they trust my wires are clean and I need to uphold that trust. It's a good feeling to have a relation with the scrapyard.
@iScrapApp
@iScrapApp 2 жыл бұрын
Nothing beats a positive relationship- but one thing to keep in mind. Once in a while a yard may have a problem with another customer and they may double check your materials- and that is ok. We recommend not being insulated, but respecting others doing their jobs. Keep up the great work!

@@iScrapApp Yes Tom, it's part of their job. I have never taken offence or felt insulted by scrapyard straff,, on either of the two yards I use. A few months ago,, one of the scale guys sent me a mail applogizing for being distracted and "in a short mood" to put it lightly. As you said, he was dealing with,,, other Scrappers. I guess you have those too?

It's always a good idea to have a good rapport with the people you're dealing with at the scrap yards I do a lot of prepared Steel the first four or five times I went there they checked it really well after that they just took over the top of the trailer and tell me where to dump it or pick it out with the crane one time my brother packed my trailer so tight it wouldn't dump they had to bring a crane over to pull it out🤠

Do most scrap yard expect ferrites to be cut out of cables? Especially VGA and DVI video cables that usually always have two ferrites. I get thousands of video cables and cutting the ferrites out adds to the processing time. Instead of just two cuts when just cutting off the. You have to do 6 cuts when cutting out the ferrites. I asked this question before and someone said just cut it off cut it off at the ferrite because you're not losing that much cable some video cables had this much fire between the cable and and the ferrite.

I cut the ends off of my wires. I also cut the multi-point ends from wires connected to motherboards or off of washers/dryers etc. I collect these connectors in hopes of them being worth selling at the scrapyard. Are they sellable?

The connectors? They may be worth something to someone if they can reuse them, we suggest checking out eBay for such items.

Ahh! I've spent hours watching videos and this one also neglected to say exactly what to do with the tiny circuit board wires! Your "clean" pile still had the one connector end on at least one of them + there were a bunch of plastic "zip tie" like things on them. Should we be removing those or is it completely a waste of time and scrap yards pay the same? Thank you!

@@iScrapApp with a switch I use channel locks and simply squeeze the switch at an angle so the latch falls out. A loose piece of silver or two will be there. Then use wire cutters to get the wire contacts on the bottom of the switch. I also save other silver parts like keyboard mylars, some led lights etc. I save it in a bucket and one day I will send it to a refinery. I actually stack silver bullion for retirement so this hobby is perfect.
