Scrapping Nitrous Oxide flasks for money

Is it worth the effort to scrap N2O Nitrous oxide cream charger bottles into aluminium, Brass and Plastic?
Full disassembly and full economic evaluation, I do the sums using today's scrap prices!

How can you tell the difference between aluminium & steel??

with one in each hand the steel is heavier and will rust when it gets wet, aluminium feels "light" and has a whitish tinge. Different shape too, steel tends to have a plastic thing on the bottom so the bottle can stand up.

What do you if one feels full of gas but the valve is bad and doesn’t release any pressure when you polish it in with the screwdriver? What’s the safest way to get the pressure out?

Can that kind of cylinders can be reused for co2 to use in fish tank ?? I found one , the aluminium one

Hi Owen, thank you so much for the video, Ive been wanting to find a way to clear up and recycle these. What is the process for the stainless steel ones, is it the same?

I have only seen steel and aluminium flasks. Never stainless. But I’m happy to be corrected. I have started using an impact driver with a socket on it and it speeds it up very quickly. Depends on your recycling centre but some will take them unprocessed as a gas cylinder and if you process them they will take them as scrap metal. Good to tidy up the neighbourhood.

What is the tool you are using to release the pressure in the tanks? Are you just sticking a pin in the valve? Also, how are you making sure the gas is releasing safely and not depressurizing to quickly and out of control? Thank you

I just stick a little screwdriver in. The gas can’t come out too fast. Worst that can happen is the can gets very cold. I used a wrench in the video. Now I use an impact driver to remove the valve. Much faster.

Ha, they are everywhere, Why not recycle them yourself. the tools pay for themselves on the first visit to the scrap yard!

I'll keep an eye out for the aluminium ones. I saved a couple steel ones a year or so ago with the plan on making a portable compressed air tank for a nailer but the steel ones have an unsuitabl weight to volume ratio. 7 ally ones strapped together sound better.

If you find out what the thread is let me know. I made one of the alu flasks into a petrol bottle for camping, rethreaded the hole to m10 and used a standard bolt and rubber washer, the neck is too small really for filling. I think the ally ones would be good for melting in the foundry.

@@bootsowen good idea. Buying threaded fittings can get expensive, especially if I use 7 bottles in a hexagon shape. From the video it looks like those fittings could have their exposed part turned down to fit copper pipe over and soldered, the inside valve bored out. A spare fitting could then be used for the charging port (valve opens naturally when outside pressure greater than inside pressure + spring tension). Bag of bends and output regulator are the other parts needed.

I've just put 3 of these steel ones out for the scrap men and now I'm not sure if I've done the right thing? There's a lot of youths hanging around. I'm hoping I'm not setting them up for mischief...

Were they empty or full? The kids really don't care for them empty, hence why they are causing litter everywhere. How could you be "setting them up for mischief" by throwing three empties into your recyclables? Seems like a pretty daft comment to make, no offence.

We are having problems finding a scrap yard to take them, we are litter pickers, our local yard has stopped accepting them in the charity skip. One guy has 128 to dispose of. We are in Cheshire/Wirral.

I get them litter picking too. Try scrap trade centre in Leigh. With that many it will be worth the drive. You have to clean all plastic and take out the top valve. Sort into aluminium and steel. I think they will buy cans too if they are sorted. Let me know how you get on!

My car costs 25p per mile (each way) in fuel so I'd have to only go with a full load or if I happen to be passing the scrap man. My local place would be a 4 mile trip each way.

You need a cargo bike Ian. My car is still doing 14/18p/mile for fuel alone. Whether any hobby scrapping is worth it is up for discussion. You have to put a very low value on your time, or enjoy it like I do!

@@bootsowen I mean more of a machine that takes away the physical work for processing bulk quantities. Also if gas is taken out there’s no dangers in removing the valve is there? What if spark is created when removing the valve itself

i have recently picked up a few of these bottles and have fished a few out of the canal magnet fishing, and was looking at doing the same as what you have done. I look around and agree that society just disguards so much that they just throw away. keep up the good work

just picked up 8 2 Liters ones there heavy-metal wanted to make a chimney out of them but sa the labeling on them fire do not refill dangerous but seeing your video I can get to reuse them just open them and put water in and then cut them with the angel grinder.

They’re good. You don’t need to fill with water as long as the nipple is out it’s ok to cut. You can if you want I guess. Make sure the gas is out first otherwise it will come out instantly. I have only ever found two of them.
