I consider myself lucky to have travelled on steam trains in the late 50s and early sixties. I grew up in Barry S,Wales and spent many hours exploring the Locos sent for scrap in Dai Woodhams yard. It used to make me very sad to see them laying there in such terrible condition. Then in the 70s I worked very near to Dai Woodhams and was so happy to see these Locos being rescued by the preservation groups and then transported on low loaders to start a new life. I believe 213 were rescued with the majority in steam again this is all due to the hard work by enthusiasts which has enabled younger generations to see them working again.

£1,500 in 1962 values is about £15,000 today. This put steam locos out of reach of the average pocket.
@Shipwright1918 Жыл бұрын
@@thomasoates3003 Still a bargain, as something like a 9F cost around £200,000 to buy new from Crewe Works (Swindon charged more even though they were identical). Steam engines were sold by weight under scrap value, so that's how many average people DID save one, they just went for a smaller engine. The one that takes the biscuit is Chaloner, a narrow gauge vertical boilered De Winton engine. Wasn't saved for any historic reasons, it was because it was the smallest locomotive that could possibly be found. Was about 20 or 30 quid, purely by its weight in metal.
@thomasoates3003 Жыл бұрын
@@Shipwright1918 Thank you for this. If memory serves quite a few of the bigger locos survived as people clubbed together to buy them.
@Shipwright1918 Жыл бұрын
@@thomasoates3003 Indeed so, or advertised in the various railway magazines of the the time for donations, which came in from all over, in amounts large and small. Didcot Center, the mecca of GWR heritage these days, got started by a group of young lads who banded together to buy a single 14xx tank engine with the help of donations and rented a siding to keep it in. Old railway men told them how to run it and look after it, so it spent many days running backwards and forwards on that little stretch of track. Even after all this time, the engine is still a part of Didcot's collection. Also like the story of David Shepherd, the artist who bought two steam locos after his wildlife paintings sold well in New York. Completely on a whim, rang up British Rail and asked to buy a steam engine. Had enough sense to say he wanted a good one, not a worn-out piece of junk, and got the reply, "Well, you're in luck. 92203's just come off heavy overhaul, and we'll be getting rid of 'er in six months anyway, so why don't you buy her? 3000 pounds, scrap value." When he told the story, he equated it with ringing up British Airways and asking to buy a 747 off of them, completely unheard of and having quite a lot of cheek. Fortunately he knew the right people from days doing paintings of the last days of steam loco operations that they helped make it happen.
