HOW I MIRROR FINISH A BAR
I start with an 80 grit flap disc on my angle grinder then I use my drill with 50 mm round sanding discs . I start with 150 grit then go through the following Grits 240-400-800 Then once I get to the following Grits I use a small squirt of WD-40 1200-1500-2000-2500-3000. The WD40 helps to lubricate the discs and stops the sanding disk binding up with the metal powder . Then after that I use my buffer wheel on my bench grinder to get a perfect mirrored finish on it.

Absolutely blew through the target last week with over 100 kg added to the stack and set a new target this week. I'm hoping to do bigger melts and not just the little 2-3 kg melts so let's see how that pans out. If you missed last week's video it's definitely a long one and runs for over 90 minutes so check it out when you get a chance. The update on ingots eye is good news and hes making a full recovery from his infection and should be back to normal pretty soon the vet said. Now sit back relax enjoy today's video and I'll see all you beautiful people next Friday👋🏻😁

That's definitely a fibreglass coating on the ali wire mate. It's common in many old welding machines as it was cheaper to use fibreglass to insulate than plastic and rubber back then. At least that's what my grandad told me. He is a retired boilermaker. Love the videos mate. By the way I have about 30-40 copper bushes if you are interested in melting them. 26:51 That slag has got to be a fibreglass or asbestos wrapping. Asbestos has a fusion point of about 1500C. Fibreglass softens and begins to degrade around 1200C.
@darkbreed
@darkbreed 8 ай бұрын
fibreglas is melting at 600 till 800 anything that melts or degrade above 800 degrees is asbestos and in rare cases a glas carbon/fibre compound but this is always black from start on and cause huge smoke during melts.
@Dan-TheOracle
@Dan-TheOracle 8 ай бұрын
ooooh top point. its not "fibreglass" as that stuff burns away to nothing at those kinds of temps as its mostly plastic. being that its probably a welder from the 70's or 80's its probably some kind of asbestos.

@@Dan-TheOracle right and this makes it really dangerous, not only that he poluted his area with asbestos fibres by cutting it with the grinder (the melting is not so risky because the fiberes stuck mostly to the molten aluminium), it is a big healthrisk. This is why you should know what exactly you are disassemble and melting, electromotors and transformators from the 70's,80's and early 90's can contain a lot of toxic stuff.

>"right and this makes it really dangerous" not really to be honest. i mean yes its better to keep away from it but there are plenty of areas in australia where the stuff is naturally found on the ground. even people who worked in the mines were usually completely fine despite breathing it in. its also been in things like brake linings for decades so is literally in "dust" on every street you will ever walk down. >"t is a big healthrisk." its actually a tiny health risk generally but to the 1 in 1 million people it harms its really bad for them... to the other 999 thousand its no risk at all. its the old M&M risk thing. if you had a plate of 1 million m&m's and you knew one of them was poison would you try a single one? i mean, probably... @@darkbreed

Well about copper and aluminum and their conductivuty you are right. But that does only apply, if you are looking at the conductivity by volume. If you look at conductivity by weight, copper is a lot worse than aluminum, which is why it often was used on overhead power lines to reduce weight an increase stability. So if you have a weightlimitation on your product and you have not a lot of current and therefore don't have concerns about heat coming off your wires, aluminm is just the better choice. However using it in a welder, where also high very high currents are needed, it is just a way of cheaping out on copper...

Hey, welder here!! The reason for this machine and most of the other one is absolutely bc companies are cheap! The other machine looked like a MIG/TIG welding machine though, and it makes sense that spool of wire was aluminum because that’s a common metal used to weld. Pay attention, he tells you every video to put cardboard between crucible and firebrick. Damp moulds = boom. You should do a youtube search on molten aluminium/water interaction, bugger me they can be violent. Everyone thinks aluminium is really stable and safe, but that's because of the aluminium oxide on the surface of all of it. Once you melt it it can be as reactive as magnesium.

Yeah mate bumped the target a touch. The hardest part will be to find an even bigger older motor so I’ll be keeping an eye out for that🤔. Have a great weekend also buddy and chat with you soon

I think you’re right. Fiberglass sleeves make a great heat reflective coating around the conductor. Coiled up like that, copper or aluminum would heat up in a confined space and with enough current.

Your local birds are quite loud, but very delightful to hear. This year a pair of Red Tail Hawks nested in a tree close to my house for the third year in a row. They get very loud when teaching their little ones to fly and hunt.. Now for winter the bobcats are back..they hide from the Hawks..can't imagine why.. Greetings from Texas

I know you won't see this comment, but I'll make it anyway- While I love all your videos, I think the ones where you make alloys like Nordic gold are some of my favorites. Would you consider creating more videos where you explore other alloys, or even experiment, in the future? Thank you! Hi Ingot and Bullion!

I just wanted you to know, that watching your videos eventually inspired my to make my own little scrapping hobby, taking apart electronics, extracting copper from the wires, harvesting individual circuitry, and completely taking apart things to their base materials. I actually have an agreement with my local humane society thrift store, and they offer me entire boxes of old out-of-date electronics they can't sell, for me to take apart on a monthly basis! Doing this, I now have multiple pounds of pure, raw copper, and a cheap little dinky smelting rig my friend bought me. (I also have a handful of brass, lead, and an arm-full of alluminium, in the form of heat sinks extracted from circuit boards) If you like, when I finally get it all going and cast myself a big ol' ingot, and chop it up into smaller ingots to send out to all my friends, I could send you one too, if you wanted, as a token of thanks for inspiring me.

That slage looks a lot like it could be asbestos or something like it. Fiberglass would burn almost completely off, but asbestos it somewhat heat resistant and that's what it looks like. Be very careful around d that stuff. Love these melting asmr videos, the last one was great.

How does it look like asbestos? I've handled asbestos many times in many different shapes and applications. I have never seen asbestos that looks like fiberglass.

@KirkHermary it looks like the same stuff that was used on many of the older ships that The navy and COAST GUARD had. Those ships had asbestos covering the cables, the same tubular stuff, it was used in and around the big motors as well as the cables.

Something I saw on another channel (It might have be The Backyard Scientist) was pouring molten aluminium into a container full of water and Orbeez. It created some really cool sculpture type thing. Could you try that with a load of different types of metals, please? Dropping the aluminium and brass into the bucket of water reminded me about it.

That was some funky fiberglass instead of aluminum . Looking forward to the big CASH count . Great video sir .
