@@stevemorrisracing Wait. You didn't really answer the question in the vid. Many of us speculated that the old thrust bearing got broken because something shoved that crank forward VERY VERY HARD. Enough to even push past the "preload" from the torrington bearing on the front end of the motor and STILL break the rear thrust bearing edges clean off. I think you confirmed that but a couple follow-up questions: 1. You think that was a long term slow failure or something that, for whatever reason, radically "shocked" the crank forward in one massive hit that snapped the ears off the rear thrust bearing? 2. Did whatever did that to the thrust bearing also likely cause all those crank journal cracks? I mean, it was every freaking journal, which is suspicious. Unless you consider what would happen to a crank if your dropped a PLANET on the end of it for a split second.

Thank you for sharing your knowledge and explaining the process of BUILDING versus assembling engines. I have been explaining why I file rings, match valve spring pressures, weigh pistons adjust crank end play when building engines since the mid 1980’s and still get the same statement from people. It doesn’t matter the parts are made to fit just put the in. Glad to see even someone of your caliber of engine building gets same result

MULLET is still a drag-n-drive car

@@mrk454and doesn’t Mullet still have a Steve Morris engine, anyway? (The old big block)
@JonathonDelumyea17 күн бұрын
This is what I'm confused on 2 different style motors the proline hemi is what I call a 30 sec motor u start it at the lanes, burn out, stage, pass then shut off, the smx is a great engine designed for drag and drive, he got a purposed built race car with a purpose built drag motor, did he have to sell the smx NO obviously but he knew that smx in mullet was 2 much never was built for that kind of power, he still owned the original big block that won a ton of races a ton in mullet, so smart money was to freshen it up put a better rod in it and put it back in mullet, that's what he did look at what it ran this weekend 6:40's with NO LOCKUP and ZERO suspension problems so why are people salty u want him to keep running an engine that ain't safe for the car, are people mad he achieved such a success on the 4th pass on a brand new car a 5 sec run, some people try forever and can't get there he made a change to his program to better it, how many people can say they have 3-6 sec cars consistent 6 sec cars and a 5 sec car I know one cleetus see he's 2 nice in a way people giving him shit about switching engines I not I would of thrown all the Steve Morris engines in the trash and had Proline or Real good at doing stuff build newones, people forget hes got multiple steve morris engines that need fixing or freshening up thats good money for Steve so people ought not to bite the hands that feeds the face. And I don't even like Proline from shit long ago but his engines run and make power

Now, you have confirmed what I have been seeing.

I love your comment on the difference between an engine assembler and an engine builder. A builder is an engineer and understands all the "why" things have to work this way to last.
@NINEWALKING17 күн бұрын
Also, the builder knows how to fix things that came in out of the tolerances and adjust the proper side to make it fit. That's where assembler stops or screws up things. Everyone can learn to assemble something when everything fits and goes in the same way. Though, when things change, as they do, you need that extra knowledge and deep understanding of how and why things function. No matter what it is about, I say real artists know how to fix the mistake and make it look good. While enthusiasts leave mistakes visible and bad functioning.

Due to the inherent shape of a crankshaft, It will not load up well in to axial thrust at all. It is more like a spring with how all the counterweights and journals are offset from each other. I think that the thrust bearing would be better positioned at the back of the engine. - otherwise you are depending on the whole length of the crankshaft to transmit all those thrust forces through each and every lobe and offset feature. Everything is rubber

I had a shop put new shims under my rocker arms in my solid lifter converted SR20 4 cylinder ages ago. A short while after I put the engine together the motor sounded like a tractor so I checked the lash and it was all out! I pulled out the shims to see that the shop ground down the case hardening off the shims and they were wearing away causing the lash to be out. Ordered the correct sized lifters and had a way better sounding motor.

I think the biggest problem with the SMX in Mullet - was mullet was never designed to run that kind of horsepower. It didn't have the chasis to handle that kind of torque, and things were moving/twisting in a way they shouldn't. It's why the Brodix bigblock is actually faster. If things start moving - they'll start breaking. Now the trans and motor aren't solid together, and you get weird forces pressing in places and in ways they weren't meant to. Now stuff breaks.
@PiDsPagePrototypes15 күн бұрын
Mullets chassis, as built by KSR, was built for the big block. The SMX was definitely over-driving the chassis, but the damage to the mains, that's the lock-up convertor cycling out on the road sections.
@Sinixstar15 күн бұрын
@ sure, but still 6 to one, half a dozen to the other. The concept is the same. The problem with the thrust bearings and movement that shoulldn't have happened? same cause - it was never built to handle the SMX, they just sent it. Which is fine. It's not hate to anyone involved. but it certainly explains the problems. Look at how mullet was built vs how Val's camaro is being built to run the same exact engine. BIG DIFFERENCE there isn't there? recall it was also being built by Troy at pro-fab (now CJRC who helped build eagle) as a jet car. Again, root problem is the same - chasis was just not built to handle THAT level of power.
