My first new car was a 1969 Super Bee, but it only had the 383 335 Hp. Drove it for 10 years. Wish I still had it. It was always nice to see the 150 MPH speedo pegged. I live in Kansas, plenty of roads back then with no traffic on them to try it out

The stock 440+6 was/is a really great factory combination for any chrysler division auto. With some minor changes, capable of really decent HP increases with headers, port work in the heads, better octane fuel & advancing the distributor with high octane fuel. My six pack cars were incredible back in the 70s. It never took much money to make 75 HP over stock . Love watching these videos !!!!

440 6 pack on dyno: My best quess for horsepower increase by removal of heat riser manifold and exhaust manifold porting; 1. Heat Riser Manifold removal @ 5600 rpm..conservative 4-8 horsepower gain. 2. Porting Exhaust Manifold ( depending on how much porting removal is required) 5-10 horsepower gain. Best estimation; 9-18 horsepower gain. Headers would also increase your horsepower. I look forward to seeing the test. Thanks to owner of 440 6 pack and of course Nick and the rest of Nicks Garage. Cheers from Edmonton Alberta Canada.

I think about the same but heat riser no more than 5HP unless the manifold ports are not already blocked off. If they are open, removing the heat riser might reduce the intake manifold temperature a bit and then I'd say 10HP.

Love the 6 packs, but wish he would go to electronic ignition distributor and headers, as that was so common in those vehicles that it was rarer to see someone who didn't. Know that I helped bolt them on(headers) of a 440 GTX and a Road Runner too. The GTX went smooth as they fit right in, but the Road Runner was a pain, as they were a cheaper set and didn't fit well without some custom bending and tweaking. Man some good times were had in those vehicles.

I'm not well off, broke my back in 2003 and life has not been the same ever since. It's the shits because my life was quite exciting and fulfilling like yours, building up old cars and trucks, fine tuning and doing it mostly by myself to keep costs down for my customers. I'd spend 100s of hours in my little shop to get the very most out of an engine while keeping in mind that they're daily drivers. Anyways, when the engine owner was asking you about the exhaust manifolds, and if more power could be gained by port work, it made me smile and brought back fond memories of better times and it really piqued my interest because I do know a fair bit about intake and exhaust ports and gasket matching the head's exhaust ports to the exhaust manifold ports and cleaning up the excess casting flash that the factory wouldn't do will give you more horsepower. It wasn't rocket science, I'd just use the one piece Mr Gasket exhaust manifold gasket, scribe both the heads and the exhaust manifolds, clean them all up with a few different die grinders and each time it made a positive difference. Thank you for posting your videos, I watch them a lot and I'll keep watching them, you guys are great!

Yeah noticed that stumble (misfire) up top you could see it shake a bit. Nick mentioned possible crack re the water from ex manifold, hope the stumble its not water related, as in the crack across exhaust and inlet ports on one pot opening a bit more at peak revs sending a splash of water through the pot causing it to stumble a bit. i say that because IME stumbles like that are more often at the lower end under WOT than up top. A look at the plugs might be in order to see if one has some irregularity due to water. Fingers crossed its not that.

Edelbrock intakes were only used for 69 only in 70 Chrysler made their own 6 pack intake out of cast Iron.

@SuperDave Miorgan no I know exactly what he is talking about. On an LA block Mopar there is a butterfly valve on the passenger side in the exhaust manifold that's controlled by a bimetal thermostat. Given enough age and some salt water they would rust into position usually closed. That made the engine run very poorly especially if the cross over port in the intake manifold was partially plugged. The quickest cure for it was to get rid of it by sawing it out. The right fix was likely to remove the intake manifold and clean the runner out, take the exhaust manifold off and get the valve there to work which I suspect required replacement. Oh and likely break a stud that help the manifold on which became its own nightmare. That means likely tying the car up for several days and if you ran into another problem that required parts you didn't have and couldn't farmer engineer then you where hitch hiking a 50 mile round trip. Also that also meant that you either went from eating peanut butter sandwiches to eating peanut butter wish sandwiches or going from burning slabs for firewood to scrounging limbs side of the road.

The 440 Six Pack is one of my favorite engines. Measured at Holley's two barrel vacuum specs the carbs are rated at, 350 cfm for the center carb and the two outboard carbs are rated at 500 cfm each, which would a total of 1350 cfm, but measured at Holley's four barrel vacuum specs, to compare the carbs to one four barrel carb, the total for the three carbs together is around 950 cfm, which is still a lot for the engine.

Hi,I believe the reason they seize in the closed position is,Condensation accumulates on the shaft as the engine cools down athen begins to rust ,at that time the flap is closed... if the spring is working. When the engine is hot it evaporates the moisture allowing the shaft to move. Oil is very important.Although now i wonder what would happen if you made your own shaft out of stainless steel ???it's probably a normal size shaft ,like 1/4 ,5/16 dia. material.Or you could drill the hole in the manifold to match the shaft.? just and old time hot rodder.

A lot of Dodge trucks and Dodge station wagons had the heat risers stick shut. Most of them were in the small blocks. The customer would come in saying they had performance problems, with a load on, going up a large hill or mountain. Using a glove you would check to see if the round weight would move. The tension spring would be long gone or the tension was gone from the spring. We would drop the y pipe and would cut the rounds off of it and leave the part that went through the exhaust manifold so it didn't leak exhaust.

A great video! Seems like a lot of posts on this one are advocating defeating the warm up provisions that Mother Mopar designed in . They had a reason . An owner might be quite disenchanted ,especiallly in a cold climate if the heat crossover and the flapper in the exhaust manifold were removed. You lose the choke function for one. It all depends on what the engine is going to be used for .Weekend dragstrip duty or daily to-work and grocery getting.

Would be a good test with headers compared to manifolds and ported manifolds... As always awesome production

I know a 440 six-pack picks up power as the heat builds in the block and heads. As long as the water temp stays between 160-185. I would love to see the increase with the port matching and heat riser removal of the exhaust manifolds. Nick, do any future episodes show that test? Love your show!

I'm beginning to suspect that Nick's the guy I should've taken my Cordoba to all those years ago, after I bought & resurrected her. That would've been an epic roadtrip.

Are you going to make a part 2 video of the engine, after the exhaust porting and manifold stud leak/cracked head issue? Thanks Scott

Can not wait to see a followup with some massaged exhaust manifolds. Would love to know cam specs, what pistons, LY or Sixpack Rods. A quick scope inside the oil-pan drain plug would confirm good rod bolts and what rods are in place, and if the rods are stock or shot-peened beams ground and polished. 915 heads or open chamber? DC/MP Template ported or ? That intake may also benefit at a minimum gasket matching to the heads. On the exhaust manifolds; years back I had some email correspondence with .....oh I believe his last name is Gessler or similar. At the time his Buick GS was the record holder of Buicks in the F.A.S.T. competition. I asked about porting exhaust manifolds. I recall him saying they liked a perfect match to the port exit in the heads at the roof of the port, with an anti reversion step on the sides of the manifolds port entrance and a bigger main focus for the anti reversion step being at the bottom of the port. Don't want to spit out how many thousands of an inch and where off just memory. But I have it on file/saved and was interesting as he had done lots of manifolds and heads for the class top guns at the time.

Those heat riser valves do restrict the exhaust, almost everyone i know just removes them due to the noise they make. But i wouldnt blame anyone for leaving them on as you'll rarely see them on these old engines anymore.

Hi Nick! That was really cool. That little flutter/vibration seemed to get better after you advanced the timing. This tells me there may be a minor distributor issue ie. rotor, points or advance weight. Maybe the centrifugal pivots are sticking? That was fun! Thanks for letting me put down my two cents. 🤓

Nasty 440-6bbl pumps out 425hp - 450Tq.....But Bucko 455[11/11/19] does 500+hp - 550Tq . That's what made Bucko's the bane of other Muscle Car street racers. NHRA not fooled tho. Bucko's waz moved to higher Stock/SuperStock classes. These days , Sure is fun reliving it all with Nick's Dyno runs

10hp. The restriction is where the manifold reduces flow when it joins the header pipe, not so much where the flap is. Its not pulling the kind of revs and cam that would suit headers where you would see maybe 50+ hp at 6500. Can't wait till next week to see If I'm right.

Stephen. We did a mild porting on the exhaust manifolds and welded the valve straight open and gained an average of 12 HP.

Perhaps the gain will be there, but after porting the manifold with headers... Maybe 20 horse with long tubes, 15 or so with existing manifolds. Interesting.

Heat riser on my 86 GMC closed up on mine and made the 350 in it overheat. Apparently the thermostatic vacuum valve on the thermostat housing neck is bad and constantly sending vacuum to where it shouldn't be. Pulled the vacuum line and it opened up and she cooled down and my dad had the muffler shop weld it open when he had exhaust put on my truck year's ago.

VIDEO DUDE!: Awesome opening as usual, sir. Your work never disappoints. :-) Ok Nick, predictions eh? Here's mine: 1. The leak is indeed an exhaust stud - first thing that came to my mind when I saw it was that and I'll stick with that guess. 2. Port matching the exhaust manifolds won't be worth much, but combined with removing the heat riser, together that will gain 12hp total overall. Over to Patreon I go. See ya there! -Ed on the Ridge

@@nickpanaritis4122 I'm surprised it wasn't a little more but obviously a switching over to headers would help a great deal to get a boost in power but I understand he wants to keep it stock appearing so I respect that like you said anything over 400 horsepower in a streetcar is very respectable
