I'm just getting started with using NVDA for my work to test web accessibility. I thought it would have more of its own tutorial to learn, hence why I'm learning on KZbin. How all did you learn how to use yours to adjust the speed and voice for NVDA if you don't mind sharing your learned knowledge?

@@sh-tlcpl hello, a quick way to change voice and speaking rate is hold down ctrl + insert key and use your cursor keys left or right to select the setting and then up or down to change the value , the insert key is thenvda modifier key, i have that setting changed in the nvda settings to caplocks key that seems a lot easier . I can't listen to the books opened in Adobe digital edition. Nvda reads only paragraphs or single words. Why is it no longer possible to set a continuous reading, which continue until the interrupt command? Why is it not possible to do this anymore? The alternative would be to unlock the book, turn it into txt and read it, but I prefer not doing this. Thanks

If you want to 'click' an icon on your desktop with keyboard, press the key that corresponds to the first letter of the icon, for example, if I want to click 'Blender' I can press 'b', if there are multiple icons starts with letter b it will cycle through them, I hope this is helpful

@umbertosmith70143 жыл бұрын
You don't need a super powerful machine but you will need a good amount of RAM so be sure to have 8 gigs or more, other than that any basic computer should work okay. You don't need lot's of memory for the program, it's just always better to have extra ram running windows. There is no need to go out and buy a new machine to do this. Good luck.

I have a mobile applications , At some page in our app we have cards, Cards itself is clickable and have some buttons and clickable elements also. if we make card role="button" then we can not select any element inside the card, any other role to card will not make card clickable . Can this type of functionality is achievable via accessebilty. any pointers for this would be of great help.
@ashauke3 жыл бұрын
That's an anti pattern. Do the links inside the card go to the same location as clicking on the card? If so, use a pseudo element on the link that takes up the whole card to make it clickable. Don't go changing roles or placing links within links/buttons

I'm sorry Dave. I'm afraid I can't do that. Jaws for Windows's very own license says you're not allowed to use the demonstration (40-minute) edition for web accessibility/testing of any kind. Plus, that's a hell of a price tag. $995 just to buy, then a mandatory $200 per year for the Software Maintenance Agreement (SMA)? I kinda think not... NVDA from NVAccess: 1 JFW from Vispero: 0

Good Parts NVDA supports tons of different voices. from what I get from the literature and my experience with people that use such software the "robotic" has the main advantage to speed it up once you are used to it.
@sparkleshyguy856 жыл бұрын
Thomas Knott Yeah, when we use screen readers (I’m legally blind, so I can speak from personal experience) we get rather capable at figuring out what the screen reader is trying to say. You learn the quirks, of them and adjust, laugh at some of the amusing mispronunciations, I’ve recently started speeding up my screen reader more (I happen to be on an iPad using VoiceOver, but these sorts of things become fairly universal. At this point I usually have to slow it down if I want someone who’s not a screen reader user quite a lot. But yes, the more robotic voices in scren readers tend to be more intelligible at higher speeds because of the way they tend to emphasise syllables and sounds, which really helps when running at some of the really insane speeds. The Microsoft voices are rather nice though.
@BlindLibrary5 жыл бұрын
The only real "bad" thing is that NVDA truly dows not support the business apps most professionals need you to use on a regular basis. Microsoft Office may be one thing. but for other, say, development environments where you're writing code/drawing controls, NVDA kinda wasn't meant for that. Plus, a lot of businesses don't like using open-source software; it gives them the impression we're cheating to get their work done.

@BlindLibrary5 жыл бұрын
Orca comes included out of the box. I can't testify to how well it works for having not used Linux so you're on your onw there. If for some wacky reason your screen or video card corrupted, you can hold down the Super key, than tap the letter s, then let go of the Super key. The voice is going to be fairly foreign to you if you've never heard it; As per someone like me, I'm totally used to it. It's a stand-alone open-source synthesizer called ESpeak. It in its own right can be bent and insanely contorted to sound very wacky ways. I was on a TeamTalk voice chat server with a few friends; Out of nowhere, one of them fires up NVDA and has ESpeak redone to sound like it's a fake Southern voice, complete with the ing sounding like in'! 7 swans a-swimmin', anyone?
