Layden has won 5 IHSAA state titles with one 3-peat and a back2back at a different school with a chance at another 3peat. Had 4 D1 players from a public school with only 600 students. One made the All Big 10 freshman team and another led the Big 10 in rebounding. Kathie was also nominated for national coach of the year in 2019. Her teams play an Iowa style game. It is delusional to think that Malone and Stockton could have executed with the success that they did were they not some of the most gifted and talented people ever to play in their respective roles. Stockton had incredible skills, while Malone was massive in size, with agility and skill like a much smaller person. The pick and role is absolutely defensible. If a team is one dimensional at the professional level, they will become defensible. No exceptions! Remember, Iowa was a tremendous team, but they couldn't close the deal because they saw two vastly superior teams in back to back finals. Thay were completely outclassed in both finals. Caitlin Clark was the best player by far both years. She has a far inferior and limited team at this level. This narrative is delusional here.

I became a bit nostalgic when watching these video clips when Caitlin was with Iowa. There are many videos of Caitlin passing to Hannah Stuelke, passing in transition to other teammates, her 3 point shots, her logo shots … where she looked a lot happier then than she appears now. I’ll go watch those videos on occasion rather than watch videos of the Fever. Those Iowa videos are a lot more fun to watch, too, showing the entire team doing fast breaks, passing, screening, scoring … the entire basis of Iowa selling out Carver-Hawkeye arena for every game because they were so entertaining, as well as selling out most other arenas during the season and into the playoffs.

You are 100% correct. Watching Indiana's offence has been more than a little confusing. Their lack of fundamentals is glaring yet coach Sides seems to be oblivious to the problem or incapable of coaching these players. I've been hearing for weeks that Clark's woes are the result of the WNBA's "next level" of play when I have believed all along that the players around her are so fundamentally weak that defenses are able to pressure and force errors. The team's failures not only places Clark in a position on an island surround by defensive player it prevents her from getting open looks from beyond the arch. Unless Clark takes a quick shot in transition, she's not getting the open looks she needs. I truly wonder how Christie Sides continues to have a job.

I totally agree, I think his game would have translated much better to another team, obviously he would still be learning and going through learning curves, but it wouldn't have been as bad as it is right now. I think that Indiana fever hurt her much more beyond the learning curve, that is, they made her transition three times more difficult for her, with teammates who cannot catch her passes, who do not execute good plays as demonstrated in this video, with a coach trying to place her in a playing position where she does not receive the ball, etc.

First of all, I've been an Iowa Hawkeye all my life, so I've come to the WNBA through Caitlin Clark. "College Basketball or Professional Basketball and why most of the fans that followed Caitlin Clark to the WNBA won't make it to the end of the season." I consider myself old but not that old. I grew up watching Dr. J, Larry Bird, Kevin McHale, Robert Parrish, Magic Johnson. I think you get the idea. I really don't watch the NBA because it's just not basketball anymore. I think the WNBA is pretty much the same. Here's why I don't think people will stay with the W. We've been lied to. The say that these are the best athletes in the world. Really??? Players are taught from a young age to not foul. To set screens not the moving screens like you see now days. They call it physicality. Here's my point of reference. If you ask most people they would probably say that they would rather watch college ball instead of pro ball. Why? Because it's real basketball. Pro ball now days is more Football and Wrestling than it is Basketball. If they are the best in the world than why do they have to change the rules. Can't they play real basketball anymore? Do they have to beat on each other in order to play? Caitlin's college coach did an article that matches my sediment. athlonsports.com/wnba/lisa-bluder-caitlin-clark-iowa-indiana-fever-olympics

Excellent video. This is what is making it so hard for CC and the fever. You make the real point, set a real pick and roll all the way to the basket. You would hardly ever see Iowa women ever take a dribble, just roll all the way to the hoop! Thanks for this.Real screens would also get CC open for her shots. Hard to watch Fever offense right now.

Great stuff Coach. It’s refreshing to watch someone breakdown video who actually knows what they are looking at, instead of just seeing say a turnover and criticizing it but not knowing what LEAD to the turnover. What the hell kind of incompetence is going on with the Fever ‘coaches’ that they can’t see deficiencies and develop their players? Stay safe and stay well. 😎🤙🏻✌🏻🤟🏻🖖🏻

Thanks for that amazing education you just gave me on what makes a screen and what makes a good screen. I'll look for that in the next game I watch. I appreciate that so much!!!

Wow again Adrienne you are so good at teaching and showing in a slow way to see what we are looking at!Anyway if the miracle of Lisa B having lunch with Fever Owner doesn't actually get us a signing I would love to see you get back into coaching and help CC work through all this mess at Indiana coach Sides is going to ruin CC's career if these things continue!Thanks again for sharing you passion and knowledge we appreciate you!!!!!!

this is extremely helpful, especially for us newcomers. ("pick and roll? is that a deli order?") the detail, the use of slo-mo, the commentary and analysis. plus I have to give you props: on the first play for the Fever, you didn't diss on the "screener" for turning away from the shooter. which she did. and just in general, you didn't throw in -- and I can see why not, no need to complicate your message -- but you didn't throw in anything about, if CC's teammates don't know how to work with her -- very much including doing screens -- well that might have something to do with CC's effectiveness. and everyone else's, who's trying to make a shot. so that might bring up some questions about what the h3ll their coach is coaching them in. plus how CC might be impacted by poor coaching. (not to mention having her private texts shared with the world. oh nvm.) but I can see why there's no reason to spell all that out -- it complicates your message, namely "THIS is what coaching looks like in collegiate BB. well so if the pros are so much more professional, well then um huh uh I dunno..." no need to spell all that out either. in short, want a job coaching a next-to-last-place WNBA team? there might be an opening, and you're obviously highly qualified. hell, I hope the Fever players all watch this -- might help them realize how they could improve/do better/help CC be more useful to the team. #subscribed

Well displayed, Thank you for letting us see some real coaching. It's so obvious seeing this comparison that Christie Sides doesn't review videos and doesn't understand why they drafted Caitlin Clark. Sides, need to address the prima donna complex on this team.

Thanks for the lesson on pick and roll! I played basketball in school but had poor coaches so I never learned about let strategies like this. I appreciate the time you took to explain it!

Fantastic breakdowns, Adrienne!!! As I've watched the WNBA this year, I've not been impressed. NCAA is much higher quality ball because they practice and execute the fundamentals better. WNBA a lot of times looks like street ball, 1x1 play. Selfish play, airballs , missed bunnies, missed layups because players aren't always putting their bodies in the correct/stable position to execute a shot. Thank you so much for these!! Maybe when your channel gains more subscribers, you'll be able to purchase better tools to tellistrate and render videos at 4k so it's visually clearer.
@v28077 ай бұрын
Yes! I keep wondering why they do fade away jumpers when they don’t need to. Those usually aren’t high % shots. And, wow, the air balls are embarrassing for women players everywhere!
@SynthMan657 ай бұрын
@v2807 I mean, it's embarrassing if you know good ball when you see it. And the WNBA is proud of that kind of product???
@KeithNeue7 ай бұрын
The whole Fever team looks like 5 individuals instead of a team. CC is trying to facilitate to 5 people playing their own game and CC is the one who Sides points out has bad habits. The real problem with the Fever is sides won't make players be roll players and let CC be the point guard. She thinks every one on the Fever is a good shooter and CC should end up being a decoy for the rest of the team. When you watch them play they can only win if their long shots are dropping because their offense is set up off of CC being blitzed.

Well I just subscribed as you are the first person to address the horrible screens that the fever do or don't seem to want to do .I have been bitching about this from day one.How is it that Boston as wide as she is can't seal off a defender so Clark or others can get an open three.Iowa never even had a real center on this psst years team and petite Gabby Marshall and others knew and were proficient at it so Clark could have comfortable looks wherever she wanted them.If you look at the components of Iowas team they were never a top tier team.But because of how they played together they became one and remember they got crushed on rebounding as they had no center and an undersized team...So they had to do fundamentals very well to win ..

At Iowa, Hannah ran track when in hs and like a wide receiver was open for long passes.

Great analysis, Adrienne. I wonder what Coach Bluder thinks when she watches these Fever games. In a recent interview with Iowa News, she praised Kate Martin's new coach in LV, but said nothing about Sides.
@Michaellinnn7 ай бұрын
Thank you for the comparison this is crazy on a lot of levels because you clearly pointing out they really need to work on team work and never run that play perfect it’s sad to see Caitlyn talent go to wait with so much talent that can be improve if only the actual team wants to work with
@plasmastorm43967 ай бұрын
Thank you, Coach, for showing us the difference between executing a proper pick and roll vs improper. You are correct when you point out the difference in coaching styles. Many people wonder what Indiana Fever Coach Christie Sides is teaching her players. Maybe GM Lin Dunn would consider hiring former Iowa women's basketball coach, Lisa Bluder as a replacement for Sides? Bluder just turned 63. She has a few years left if she would take the job if offered.

Hi there, I am an NBA fan for a long time and have been following the WNBA recently. I really enjoy GOOD BASKETBALL and film breakdowns. It's always illuminating to see what the great players and teams do in terms of fundamentals, winning basketball, etc. I think you see it for instance with great NBA teams like this year's Celtics, who just play great disciplined ball on both ends, and players like Jokic, who aren't that flashy but make WINNING plays. Thank you for this breakdown! Appreciate the nuance and analysis! :)

AB,Smith or any other teamate is a definite scoring machine if they do it the right way coz they suppose to be "talented" players than the collegeplayers. I have noticed this every time cc calls out a play and they can't seem to handle passes.

AB doesn’t keep her eyes on CC when she rolls. She also keeps her back on CC too long for some reason. By the time she’s ready and asking for the pass, the defense has already switched back.

Clark has a skill set similar to Pete Maravich. He too was cut from the Olympic team. When he came to the NBA his teammates were jealous because he signed a big contract. They froze him out. The people who don’t understand Clark’s game didn’t like Pete either. Like Pete, when Clark walks out on the court she is the best player on the floor. She is extremely athletic, great passer, good rebounder, and total team player, very fast and generally unstoppable. The haters don’t understand her game nor the game itself. Like Adrienne says Indiana doesn’t understand what they’ve got. She leads her team all almost all statistical categories; scoring, assists, steals, minutes, FT%, 4th in rebounding, 2nd in blocks. Still they won’t pass to her and seldom set her screens. Insanity.

Miss Ross you should interview for the job to coach the Fever. Caitlin, Aliyah, Temi, Katie Lou etc. would all be in good hands with you as the coach. Caitlin can screen efficiently with anyone if her teammates know how to set one successfully. Sides should be watching videos on how Iowa set the screens for Caitlin and the results of a successful screen. A head coach should know how to run plays successfully and Sides is horrible at running plays. She should be running offensive plays through CC at PG, but she does not seem to want to set up plays to help Caitlin either find an open shot or set successful screens that end in made baskets for Aliyah, Temi, Samuelson etc. It looks likes Boston, Clark, Wallace, Wheeler etc. are not on the same page part of the time and are confused about what play they should be running.

hear, hear! though I don't know anything about BB. but part of what this is about is, how does the WNBA reach out the newbies following CC? unfortunately for Coach Sides, she plays a big part in that. ditto for the US Olympic Team: you can justify your decision (it's a perfectly valid decision) -- but how do you sell it to the fans? because fans = $. and that's what sports is about, for the WNBA and the Olympics. and CC = $. unless you screw that up.
