I like Death Proof more than most people (the uncut version), but maybe for a weird reason. I laughed out loud in the end when I realized the film was never going to go back to explain what happened to the girl who was left behind with the man who owned the car they stole. So many movies do the same thing, end with the defeat of the villain without showing us what happens when the characters return to their normal lives, even when they're being chased by the cops or some other conflict. I feel, admittedly without any real evidence, that Tarantino was riffing on that aspect of 1970s/1980s films. The consequences of the girls when they return to their normal lives, having stolen a car and damaging it with their friend as collateral--it's the definition of begging the question of what happens next. That, and the awesome stuntwork, make the movie work for me.

For the director BA discussion, I immediately said Coen Bros., so it was nice to get an echo from Lon. A great director still with us, whom no one ever seems to list for anything, is Norman Jewison... maybe not the *most* consistent, but c'mon, In the Heat of the Night, Fiddler on the Roof, The Cincinnati Kid, Moonstruck, The Russians Are Coming, The Hurricane, The Thomas Crown Affair... just surprised he's not namechecked more. I'd also offer up P. T. Anderson, Iñárritu, Jane Campion, Spike Lee, Hayao Miyazaki (animation counts!), and previous HT anthology star Wes Anderson

The kid then explains he popped the other guy because the guy said Moebius' Surfer was superior to Jack Kirby's. Then Denzel agrees with the kid that Kirby's is "the only true Silver Surfer" but he still needs to keep his temper even in the face of stupidity.

Put your money where your mouth is and do an Honest Trailer for Smokin Aces and try to hate on it. Amazing performances from Jeremy Piven, Mathew Fox, and Chris Pine. The scene where Mathew Fox dies, the scene where Piven looks up at the sun and says f-u to it (my personal favorite), the scene where Chris Pine puppeters a dead Ben Afleck's face, the scene where Piven finds out there's no deal, the scene where Piven does magic in front of Common while doing a soliloquy about relationships, the scene where Jason Bateman is a coked-up furry?, the scene where a bunch of neonazis run out of an elevator with chainsaws screaming, the scene where all the cops just go flying after getting hit by a huge snipper rifle. You guys just need to rewatch it. Smokin Aces is no Pulp Fiction, but it's wildly entertaining with great acting and a crazy story. With all do respect it's cringe inducing to watch all four of you flippantly disregard it and lump it in with those other films. Side note, Smokin Aces is strangely one of Terrence Malick's favorite contemporary films along with Zoolander. Look it up.

Frankly, I was really excited for Tarantino x Star Trek. A lot of impact from Star Trek comes from dialogue. (I come from the newer generations, TNG+) Dialogue is something Tarantino excels at. Maybe there was too much groundwork to fit existing characters and too much brand name to introduce new ones...but we've seen Tarantino highlight the past, it would have been damn interesting to see him take a stab at the future.
