Geoff Tate in the early years of his career had wicked power, range and control. Chris DeGarmo is an awesome guitarist with an acute sense for melody. Queensryche had many great songs and a few good albums.

As a whole, Roads to Madness is my favorite because of its epic quality, but for songs with vocals "dripping with emotion", Anybody Listening? is my favorite. Make sure to listen to the full version on the album, and not the edited (shortened) MTV version.

I listened to them throughout the 80's. The album Empire really drew my attention to these guys. Back in the day, and still now I'd buy my band t-shirts at the concerts. Along with the ticket stub it was my proof that I actually went to the concerts. Other, than maybe record shops or winning one from a radio station contest, they didn't sell them in stores. You could only get them at the show.

Where to start... I have a vinyl copy of their EP ON 206 Records before they were signed to EMI. Very rare and hard to find. You just heard one of the very first Prog Metal songs. Back in 1983, Queensryche and Fates Warning invented a new form of Metal called Progressive or Prog Metal. This is a perfect example of why it is a superior style of music.

what i noticed about Queenryche ...is the leads in their songs never overpower the overall theme of the song...their leads seems perfect for their songs
@captaincapitalism264 Жыл бұрын
They gave something different to the early 80s metal scene...not your typical lyrical material for that decade...shades of Black Sabbath in the writing, but with that early 80s metal sound, and of course Tate's amazing vocals. If you like this then you definitely need to check out "Queen of the Reich" from this same 1982 EP. The reached their peak, to me, with Operation: Mindcrime in 1988 ("I Don't Believe In Love" and "Eyes of a Stranger" are masterpieces).

Great review and Chris De Garmo was the guitarist smoking on that lead with Michael Wilton. Two of the best in the business.
@craighenry95122 жыл бұрын
Chris was fantastic as were two other Prog Metal guitarists I find slightly better, Jim Matheos of Fates Warning and the most underrated Metal guitarist of alltime, Criss Oliva of Savatage. But Chris is right up with them, which says a ton about his ability. Plus he was their best backing vocalist and wrote a ton of their lyrics, as well.

On a lonely walk this morning A light mist in the air Dark clouds laughing at me in silence Casting shadows through my hair In the distance I saw a woman Dressed in black with eyes of grey She wore her pain like a shackled spirit Eternal life was her debt to pay The lady wore black It's the sign of the prisoners lives The lady wore black See the years through the tears in her eyes The lady wore black Her mystic powers calling me The lady wore black Her love can set me free The wind song whispered a warning Telling me to beware Of the quiet shadowed woman And of the sadness I would share We sat for sometime together in silence Never speaking in words Of all her thoughts she spoke with her eyes And I listened remembering all I heard The lady wore black It's the sign of the prisoners lives The lady wore black See the years through the tears in her eyes The lady wore black Her mystic powers calling me The lady wore black Her love can set me free The words she spoke were of forgotten lives And of all knowledge gained Mem'ries I had and didn't know why With a smile she explained I should have listened to the wind's cold warning And walked the other way I touched her soul and now I bear her sentence But for her love I'll gladly pay The lady wore black It's the sign of the prisoners lives The lady wore black See the years through the tears in her eyes The lady wore black Her mystic power calls to me The lady wore black Her love can set me free

Suite Sister Mary yes, but Eyes Of A Stranger absolutely not. For Eyes Of A Stranger, you go with the regular studio version. The way he sings the chorus live is a downgrade from the way he does it on the record. And that chorus is arguably the driving force of the song.
