My nephew, who knew nothing about fountain pens, got a Scriveiner for me for my birthday a few years ago. It was a chrome and goldtone one, and I was very impressed. Wrote smooth and wet. A little on the high end of the build quality, until you get to the nib. Compared to the same nib in a Benu, they're a bargain. Thanks for sharing this!

I find it to be a pleasant writer. My Benu's Schmidt nit (also a #5 F) isn't as smooth. It's not bad, just more feedback, kind of like some Platinum and Sailor steel nibs...pencil-like.

LOL! same here just got one for Christmas 2024, and has turned out to be one of my best writers, no tuning or hard starts. This pen is underrated. i would put this over a Metropolitan.

I was sceptical of the Scriveiner brand at first and the claims of being a luxury fountain pen. But having received my pen today, I must admit that it blows a lot of expensive fountain pens out of the water. The Schmidt broad nib is amazingly juicy and puts down a bold line. The quality of the "click" when closing the pen cap with the body is reassuringly sound. I would without doubt recommend this pen to anyone on the basis that it is a great pen for under $75. Very few pens at this price will give this pen a run for its money. @JG3 Reviews - pronounced "Scree-vin-na". Great review by the way!

For those who love Schmidt nibs: the Kaco edge is available for $8 and comes with two cartridges if gifting as a starter pen. Mine doesn’t dry out, and it has a lovely capping snap.

Kaco's first run had some cracking issues, and that turned a lot of people off. But I bought a couple after they said they'd remedied the problem, and so far they are both holding up just fine. And both have terrific nibs. 👍

The first Kaco was awful, the second run was much better. By the time they started making colors the problem was solved.

Thanks for your fair review. By the way, I too really like the Cross pens. Cross is a very underrated pen. Lifetime Warranty. I never had a problem. Great customer service.

I just bought one of these on Amazon Prime Day. £35. British Racing Green with chrome trim, medium nib. It's such a smooth, juicy nib, easily the best steel nib I own. (I have a Pilot Metropolitan as well, which I also love, but that's a Fine, so not really a fair comparison). My Scriveiner has a flaw in the coating on the grip section so I reached out to their customer services to ask if they could replace the part. Well, they apparently can't send out parts (I guess because they are manufactured on the other side of the world) but in les than 24 hours after contacting them, they're sending me a whole replacement pen and they don't even want the faulty one back. Aside from that fault with the damaged grip section, it's a really lovely pen and their customer service is absolutely top-notch.

Enjoyed the review - thank you. My first time viewing your channel. I recently bought a 24K gold finish Scriveiner, with fine nib, from Amazon, just 2 months ago. I live in the UK and it cost me 65 GBP. I absolutely love it. I like the quality, the way it writes, everything. I thought it was quite good value for money, given how good the pen looks, writes and feels. I would certainly buy Scriveiner again, and would have no hesitation in recommending them, and would happily buy one as a gift. I haven't had it long enough yet to experience any problems with the gold plating on the nib. Maybe Schmidt need to sort that out.

I've tested four now (they sent a few after this review) and they've all been great (both F and M nibs). Glad you're enjoying yours, too!

I'm a big fan of the British Racing Green so now i have the ballpoint, rollerball and as of yesterday the fountain pen mated to the Wordsworth & Black Racing Green bottled ink and they're beautiful to look at and write with. My favourite notebook is the Oxford My Notes as the Optik paper is perfect and the fountain pen glides over the page. Yet again another reviewer that has trouble writing.

great review, I do have to say that I've had a scriveiner pen for a bit over two years and the gold nib is perfect. the only downside that I can find is the lines could be a bit thinner (even with my extra fine nib) and since its silver coated its pretty scratched up from everyday use.

Interesting pen. As an aside I don't think Cross makes many, if any pens in the US. Years ago they shipped their machinery to China, I believe. But going back, I have had some Chinese nibs' "gold plating" wipe / wear off. I do not have any pen with a Schmidt nib. I will have to look for them as possible replacement nibs. Great review, James. Looking forward to you next installment.

I've been visiting my new granddaughter, but have looked forward to watching this review -- and I'm eager for the follow ups. You have said, James, what needs to be said. I will note that I'm reluctant to get gold plating for just the reason you highlight here. I got a Cross fountain pen (basic black resin) back in 1995, and over the long years the plating has worn off. I still take it out occasionally to enjoy the writing that has adapted so well to my hand. The Velveteen Pen! But, one year?

Grandchildren do take priority! 👍 I think a year is awfully quick, too. I wouldn't have been surprised after several years, but this was definitely way early.

Having just bought a Scriveiner on Amazon I’m glad your review turned up in my feed. Being dissatisfied with my old Schaeffer and seeing the chrome and gold one at a very discounted price I decided to give it a try. I’m glad I did. It is a joy to write with as well as being aesthetically pleasing to look at. Plus the warranty can’t be beat. I’m hoping for many years of service from it. The other brand I’ve never seen reviews for is Woodsworth and Black. Do you know anything about them? They seem like a value brand.

This stumbled into my feed, but I've had one for a little while. It was kind of expensive for what it is, but function wise it seems fine. I definitely prefer a fatter pen, this one's too thin, but that also makes it easy to stow and if you're only writing a little bit it's not a big deal. It's basic, but functional. It does write well, not scratchy, a nice level of feedback, and I do like the appearance of the pen. It's maybe worth trying if you like its appearance and/or dimensions. I don't regret it, as it does work well and gives me something else to try/play with. But for the same money you can buy a Lamy Al-Star, which also looks nice (granted it's different), and is a better pen (for me) in every way.

lol, I’m familiar with it (and the Wordsworth) as they both come up every time I’m searching for any fountain pen. I think a “good gift pen” would also depend on who you’re giving it to. My first reaction to it is “it’s boring.” (My second is it’s overpriced.) I’m no fan of the Metro or the Safari (everyone’s recommendation for “intro pen”) Metro is ugly (imo) and looks uncomfortable, and the Lamy Safari is cool looking, but if you have anything but the standard tripod grip, it’s a torture device. If you presented me with a multi colored sparkly Jinhao 82 or PenBBS 480, I’d be so excited! Even a demonstrator 9016 or Prera (I have small hands) would be cool because it wouldn’t have been something I’d been exposed to…and, as a newbie, I could see right inside and see how everything works! Thanks for reviewing this (yes Picasso comes up quite a bit, too) and I’m glad to know they are what I thought they were which is something trying to look pricey and costing more that’s probably not the quality you think it is. (Although, I like Schmidt nibs, I find them to be bouncy, at least in the #6 size.)

Hey New Sub here, a little about myself I'm Belizean based Art KZbinr, my full-time job is nurse and I love fountain pen. I have modest collection of 23 pens. Mostly the under $30USD a Lamy Vista, Twsbi Go, Faber-Castell Grip and Hexo, one Jinhao 8802, Noodlers demonstrator, kaweco sport, speedball, pilot varsity, a pen another KZbinr got me from 5 below, a William Mitchell from Jackson's Art, 2 Centrum pens I found in my country as well as Zebra M301. Few other under $3USD pens I bought from Ali-ex-pres-s. But the fountain pen I am enjoying using is Oxford Helix a friend got me from UK. Have you ever used this pen? I hope you don't mind me asking you to review this pen day.

Thank you so much! I really appreciate seeing it in action. I've decided to get a fountain pen, a leather bound journal and write as we sail on the Queen Mary 2 this autumn. What blue ink would you recommend to buy for the converter?
@JG3Reviews
@JG3Reviews Жыл бұрын
Any good ink in a color you like. I lean toward Pelikan, Waterman, or Pilot inks for basic blues and blacks, and I have more Diamine than anything else for more color variety. None of these are going to be a problem in the Scriveiner.

While it is disappointing about the wear and tear on the nib after only a year, Schmidt nibs are cheap and relatively common and easy to find so thats a minor gripe for me honestly

James, a “scrivener (pronounced “i” like the i in “it”) is a good translation for a biblical “scribe” or, for that matter, a modern scribe. It can also be used for a notary public (although I have never heard it used for one). I only looked it up because I was fairly sure it was pronounced with the short i as in it. Thanks for the review.

I bought this one. I like It’s aspect, but I’m having difficulties when writing. It seems that the ink is not reaching well the nib. What can I do?
@JG3Reviews
@JG3Reviews Жыл бұрын
Most times I've had this issue I've been able to clear it up with a good flush and cleaning. Some pens might have a little bit of manufacturing debri that can clog (it can be very tiny). Sometimes there's a small ink clot. Even if you flushed it out before inking it, I'd give that a try once or twice to see if it clears it up. It's the most common issue.

You were selling me on this pen... Until you compared it to the Metropolitan... So not interested anymore, besides, here in Mexico, Amazon has it listed for around 75-80 USD, I can think of a lot of pens that interest me more than this one and are a lot more affordable. Thank you as usual for a great review.
