Hi, Larry: Quarter inch to half inch wood is really much easier to cut than the thinner 1/8" wood. There is very little resistance in thinner wood and even when cutting that thickness, I often recommend that beginners 'stack cut' the wood (two or more layers) because it helps maintain better control. These little blades are really sharp and they go through thin stock very easily. If you are having trouble with the thicker wood, by all means use thinner pieces. Whatever works best for you. :)

What kind of paper is used for scrolling? I notice it sticks and peels. Is it a specific paper?
@SheilaLandry5 жыл бұрын
I use full sheet label stickers (8.5 x 11") that I run through the printer and then stick to the wood. Be watchful though - most of them have 'too much' sticky. You have to blot them on fabric first to remove some of the stick or they are a bear to get off. They make low-tack stickers and repositionable stickers that are full sheets like this, but they are a bit more costly. The regular ones are fine if you blot them first. It is an easy way to accurately follow lines. :)

Sheila great video!!.. I have only just recently got into wood working and using a scroll saw. I have two questions if you don't mind. Firstly, I noticed on your video after making your initial cut into the corner you backed up cutting a wedge out which allowed you to move the wood without twisting the blade but sometimes you are able to turn the wood without twisting the blade. Secondly, how thick of a stock will a scroll saw cut, I'm trying to cut 1 1/4 inch?…Thank you again

Thank you for your comment. Cutting 1.25" wood can be a challenge - especially for a beginner. Perhaps it would be better to start a bit thinner and go from there. I hosted an online class that covers most of the basics of scroll sawing. It is located on a site called Lumberjocks. I have put the link to Lesson 7 in the description and you can go there and see in detail how I cut the inside corners. I hope this helps you. :) Thanks for your interest. Sheila

@SheilaLandry6 жыл бұрын
Hi, Herbs. :) No - I am not very fond of spiral blades. They are difficult to control and they leave a very rough edge many times. Plus (because of the nature of the spiral teeth) the kerf is very wide in comparison to 'regular, reverse-tooth' blades. Some love them and they are necessary when your wood piece is longer than the throat of the saw, but I use them as little as possible.

@SheilaLandry3 жыл бұрын
I like Olson Mach blades. I may have used a size 3 for this project. They are reverse-tooth blades, meaning that the bottom inch of teeth face up so that the bottom of your wood piece doesn't chip out as much. I always use reverse-tooth blades and I find Olson to be the best. (No - I am not compensated by Olson in any way. I have used their blades for over 20 years and have yet to find better.) :) I hope this helps. :D

Awesome work but can you PLEASE tell me how you cut wood so fast. I have purchased different blades and it seems as if I have to push the wood hard just to get it to cut. Am I using the wrong thickness of wood or the blade. I have tensioned the blade according to some videos I have seen saying to tighten to a C note. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

I use Olson Reverse-Tooth scroll saw blades. I like the Mach blades (they are kind of like precision ground) and I probably used a size 3 on this piece. I find the Olson blades follow where I want to go the best and turn on a dime. They are the only blades I use. You can check out my site and the class in the link in the description. I am glad you enjoy the video. :)

frehleycomet I haven't tried them to be honest. If anyone else reading this has, please feel free to chime in. You can find the Olson blades online for really good prices at a company called "The Wooden Teddy Bear". They sell blades and scroll saw patterns and give you quantity discounts and offer great service. :) (Please Google the company if you are interested, as I am not allowed to post links here.)

Ok I will check it out but can you tell me do you use spiral blades at all or the blades that have teeth going in both ways up and down. Another question and I really do appreciate you taking the time to answer my questions but when I install the blades do the teeth have to point down or up when it's just a single line of teeth.
@SheilaLandry10 жыл бұрын
frehleycomet I don't use spiral blades, but my partner Keith has for his "portrait style" designs. I do use reverse tooth blades (where the bottom inch of the teeth points upward) all the time. We have an article on blades and blade choices on the Free Patterns and Resources page on our site. The teeth point down when you install them (for the reverse tooth blades, the majority of the teeth point down and only the bottom inch of teeth point up.) I also have a class on scroll sawing on on the Lumberjocks website and I think it would be very helpful to you. :)

I never use spiral blades. I know some people like them, but I really don't. I feel that they leave the edges of the pieces too ragged and sloppy looking. I know some people love them for portrait type scroll work, but I don't do that type of cutting so I really have no need for them. :) If you like the reverse tooth blades, by all means use them for all the cutting.
@tayfbaghdad10 жыл бұрын
Thanks for explaning .. Just is there a special reson to use the reverse blade ? Thanks
@SheilaLandry10 жыл бұрын
tayf baghdady Yes - the bottom inch of teeth are facing 'upward' so that there is not fraying or tear out of the bottom of the wood. The reverse tooth blade greatly reduces this tear out so you have far less sanding to do. You can read the blade article on the "Free Patterns and Resources" page on my website. There are many articles and videos there which cover a variety of subjects. :)

I never heard of that type of saw. If you use a small enough blade, it should be able to turn. You can't do this on a band saw. I am not sure if you mean that. I have never heard of Einhell. Use a size 2/0 or 2 blade and you should be fine. :)

But I want to learn how to cut shapes out. Never used a band saw besides the one I used in Junior high in wood working class. Which was over 20 years ago :) So I just need one thats easy to use and wont mind sitting for long periods of time.

Hi! It is very hard to recommend a 'cheap' saw that performs well. Most saws that are on the cheaper side of things vibrate a lot and have lots of other issues that make it particularly difficult for people - especially new people - to be successful. They are full of frustration and more so than not, cause newcomers to sawing to quickly abandon the hobby. Since all you really need for scrolling is a drill press, a saw and blades, I suggest you waiting until you can get a decent saw until you buy. Otherwise, you are just wasting your money. I am not trying to sell expensive saws, but you need quality tools to do quality work. I have an Excalibur saw which isn't made anymore, but there are several in the $500 or so range that are comparable and much better than the cheaper saws you mention. I haven't had experience with the other saws though, so I shy away from recommending any one in particular. My advice is to find a good scroll sawing forum and joining and getting feedback from those who have used these saws. They will tell you if they had trouble, or if the customer service for that particular brand is good or not. I would hate to recommend something that would give you more headaches. There are also many good used saws that you can find at places like Craig's list or local estate sales. Many are just gently used and in pretty good condition. I hope this helps. For other tips on blades and such, you can visit our sawing website and see the many articles we offer on different aspects of sawing. www.sheilalandrydesigns.com/free-pattern I hope this helps. :)

What kind of blade, is this? Is it a spiral blade?
@SheilaLandry5 жыл бұрын
I don't use spiral blades. I find they tear up wood and the kerf is too big for details. I use Olson reverse-tooth blades. This one is probably a 2 reverse or a 5 reverse. I am thinking a 2 would work well with this half-inch thick maple.

I've watched a handful of these videos by different people. what is the white on it that allows you to see the design? special paper? paint?
@SheilaLandry7 жыл бұрын
I use full sheet labels. I print the pattern out on them from my computer and then I 'blot' it on my apron to slightly 'de-stick' it (otherwise it is difficult to remove - this depends on the type of sticker you have). Then you just cut out the design and remove the sticker and you are good to go. :)

Sheila Landry is it easy to do just tracing your design onto the wood? I have a cricut I plan to use to cut my designs and then trace onto the wood. is it too hard that way?

Great vid, but how do you keep your work piece from bouncing please ????
@SheilaLandry8 жыл бұрын
+drowization Hi. :) What causes the wood piece to bounce (also called "chattering") is usually caused by one of two reasons: A - the blade being too large for the thickness or the intricacy of the design or B - the speed of the saw is too low. If the blade is too large, too much friction and it tends to try to lift the piece off the table as you scroll. You can try a size smaller blade and see if that alleviates the issue. Also, if the saw speed it too slow, the teeth of the blade have more of a chance to 'grab' the wood and also lift it off of the table. Speeding up the saw will usually eliminate this from happening. Sometimes it is a combination of both factors. As you become more familiar with the type of blade, speed and hardness of wood you are working with, you will develop an intuition as to what your cause may be and it will be sure to lessen. Also, as you gain more confidence at the scroll saw, you will notice that you will hold the piece steadier and this will also help stop the wood from 'chattering.' I hope this helps you out a bit. Let me know if you have any other questions or need further clarification. :) Sheila

I have been scrolling better than 26+ years, love your ability to create patterns. I started on an old sears saw and 22yrs ago I purchased a 20" RBI super hawk. I still use that saw every day and never once has the saw broken. Its a great machine. I fought and won a battle with stage 3 lung cancer and now into 4-1/2 years of being a survivor. However, I did not beat the side effects of chemo and radiation. If it wasn't for my little woodcraft shop I would probably have lost my mind, LOL. I appreciate all you have done for the scrolling community. It is people such as yourself that inspires us all. Thank you so much. Lately I have been thinking maybe getting a new saw, I really like the pegas 21" with tilt head, its the one built by excaliber but comes already equipped with the pegas blade clamp system, who knows, maybe I'll take the plunge but at the same time I have trouble with the thought of replacing my RBI saw, it has been such a great tool. I just always wanted to try a parallel link saw. Again, Thank You for all you have done for those of us that enjoy scrolling.........
