I have experimented w/ Blender on and off for years. I'm just a few videos in and have learned more about both how to use Blender and how it works than I have from years of on and off experiments. This method of sculpting mirrors how I learned to sculpt in "real life" - starting with an armature and adding to it, focusing on getting the big things right before rendering the small ones. Thanks for this incredible series.

I think it would be interesting to do something different from others to make video tutorials starting from the basics of sculpture, explaining well the various steps how to make a man and woman figure and then slowly introduce for example how to make various types of shoes, clothes, armor, hats, weapons etc. now on the patreons we only see miniatures sold while this would be an opportunity for each of us to learn from scratch and finally make miniatures there are things to explain for all this you would gladly have my contribution but I also think of many others

Noob question: I've done some basic tutorials like make a sword. I have uploaded your frame. When I try to sculpt a cylinder, similar to your branch and bow, it is automatically grabbing the edge of the cylinder and not allowing to twist or shape it. I think it is an initial setting issue. I know others have asked this but I can't fix it. I've changed brush size/ strength, and fall off

@MWSculpts

Hey so I would look at this a bit differently as the resolution is all relative to the scale you are working at and the size of the specific object. What I do now is use the remesh grid (hit r then ctrl+r to apply) and just make the mesh a resolution that is low enough to make big changes. From there you can always increase the resolution to add more detail

Hey James, hmm yes just thinking you could try turniung on some of the other axes for mirroring, Here I have the X and Z ones turned on I think. Once you have remeshed you should be able to pull out and twist the mesh with the snake hook. If it is not moving much it could be the strength of the brush, try shift+F to adjust the strength higher and see if that helps. Let me know if still struggling and will have another think of what it might be.

Objects which behave like this are called 'linked duplicates'. You can create one by selecting an object and hitting alt+d, then you can position the new linked object anywhere. Got a question, are there any cons to using this method as opposed to sculpting in a neutral pose then posing it? I guess the pose would look more natural, plus the muscles would deform differently depending on the pose. But how would defining proportions (especially when working from a reference) and non deforming objects (like armor and stuff)work when it needs to be symmetrical?
@MWSculpts
@MWSculpts 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah you are right with your points. I would add that you could sculpt in parts in a neutral pose to ensure proportions are nice then pose it in the same way later on. Another downside to having so many parts as the transitions between arm and forearm for example will look bad until you decide to merge together

Hi! I write to you since you seem to be a person who knows what is doing and who uses Blender for printing (lovely results by the way). When I model in Blender a figure from scratch the basic polygon I start with is totally hollow, with a very slight layer instead of a real solid inside. This stops me for printing anything at all... may I ask you for any advice?

I know it's been 1 year but I just started using blender to make some mini and I have an issue. I wanted to make, like you did a character holding, this time a sword instead of a bow, but when I try to move the guard to the middle of the handle, it goes on the top, so I have 2 questions, is there a way to disable the colisions between the different object and how can I move an object on one axis and only this one (when I move a cylinder on the Z axis it also move it on the Y axis and it's verry annoying) ? (sry english isn't my 1st language)
@MWSculpts

Welcome to Blender! 😁 I think if you hit g to move then z once you can move on that axis, if it doesn't work as expected try hitting g then z twice and this may be better. If you look at the ui at the top you will see you can select which axis will be used by default (local or global) and local is the selected objects axis. Hope this helps and let me know if struggling 👍

Good question, I would think it depends. Your printers xy resolution, exposure time and resin will all affect this. I would recomend just printing something you have created and you will soon get a feel for what comes out and what doesn't. It will depend on how deep you go in defining your details too. You could print the ameralabs town, measure the smallest detail that appears. Then in blender, in object mode there is the measure tool, this would give you a great idea.

Hello there, good to see another video... looking forward to the rest of this series. One quick question, likely for the final video rather than this one. Its about poly (or face) counts on the working and final mini. Having ecently stared down my mini creattion journey... one thing I can't really find any info on is how many faces are needed at various stages. You mention working in low resolution, but what is that for a miniature, vs high resolution? Watching sculpting videos in general, low resolution could still run a million faces depending what you're sculpting. I guess thats not the case here... Thanks again, definitely looking forward to more videos... :)

Good question Neil, I believe the scene in Blender is in meters by default, so when you voxel remesh at 1, each voxel will be about 1m in size. I have my scene set up in mm, therefore when I remesh to 1 each voxel will be 1mm. So usually I will remesh to 0.6 at first, moving to 0.3, then 0.15, then 0.08 and even down to 0.05. However you we to consider what size the printed object will be as to whether the voxel size will be noticable. So for example if you have made a 32mm miniature and remesh down to about 0.08 or even 0.15 in my experience with a 2k resolution printer such as the Voxelab Proxima you cant notice those voxels. However once we move onto 4k such as the revered sonic mini there will need to be a slightly higher resolution I expect. I hope this clears things up for you and you have got my cogs turning on how I can explain this to others in a future video ^^.
