Whose Turn, Reviews the Mega Popular Scythe from Stonemaier games. This is a Beautifully made board game that hits high on most everybody's tier lists.
Scythe is a game where you're racing to be the first person to achieve 6 Goal/Achievements "Stars" to initiate the end game. Once the game ends the players tally up their controlled territories, the resources they control, and how many stars they've completed and depending where they are on the Popularity track they will receive varying amounts of gold for each catagory. The player with the most gold at the end of the game will end up being the victor. There is a delicate balance of spreading yourself out on the map but also waring over resources and territories to insure you are the victor when that threshold is finally crossed to end the game. while battling in this game is key to achieving the goals to ending the game this is very much a mind game when it comes to battling, just because you initiate a battle doesn't automatically mean you are wanting to win that battle you could just be wanting to return to your home base as no units are technically lost in this game when you lose battles. and along with no units being lost, there there is a faction in the game that doesn't have the hard cap of (2) Battle Victories. so they'll be able to battle non-stop and that's where the mind games start as you try to determine are they really trying to win this battle or are they just trying to get you to discard all your good battle cards to make you a easy target in future turns.
Speaking of Faction abilities there are some factions in Scythe that you'll quickly notice have some very powerful and sometimes broken abilities because of which many people in the online community have dubbed these BM factions to play as and tend to have some type of bidding or handicap system in place when curtain factions are played. Don't let that discourage you though there is still plenty of randomness and player interaction that can be done to counteract some of their advantage, also they are only really overpowered when played by experienced players that know what they're doing.
If you have this game and you're trying to introduce your friend group to the glory that is Scythe you'll likely have a clear advantage over any new players and this game can be fairly daunting at first until you realize that really the game is played by selecting one of 4 different (Sometimes 5 with factory cards) actions and playing out those actions each turn until someone accomplishes the aforementioned 6 Goal Stars. while the general premise of the game is fairly simple the execution of said actions is key to victory. once you get enough experience under your belt in this game you'll find yourself claiming victory in fewer and fewer turns meaning every turn you play is that much more meaningful. As you'll find yourself before the game even is underway determining which stars your going to be achieving Spoilers its almost never Popularity or Bolster and find the shortest route possible to obtaining those 6 stars while also maximizing your Resources and Territories you control.
There is very little to be said on Cons for this game other than some of the Faction board combos can be Broken, inexperienced players have a low likelihood of winning, and Every action can be meaningful, and you'll find yourself struggling to catchup if you fall behind because you made the wrong move a few too many times.
