Grain elevators do not gave the kind of money to buy brand new nice locomotives, they have to get cheap ones like these.

Former SOO GP7s 378 and 383 survive and operate out of Salford Ontario on the OSR. Different paint schemes, and I've been inside the cab of 383 while it was waiting in Woodstock Ontario

The Conway Scenic Railroad in New Hampshire has a GP7 in operation and I was fortunate to see it when I was on vacation there and film it as it pulled the short passenger train behind it. These classics will NEVER get old. Thanks for sharing

Torpedo tubes are on the top not for extra fuel capacity for extra range, but rather water capacity for steam heating for the passenger equipment
@SD457500Ай бұрын
@jonborowski9781 Thank you for the comment! I was told they moved those air tanks to the top of the locomotive in order to make room for a larger fuel tank below. The torpedo tubes are for air, not fuel.
@jims6323Ай бұрын
Sorry, they are air tanks! The water tanks are on the bottom where the air tanks should be. Locomotives that hauled pass. cars had this modification new from EMD.

The torpedo tubes are for air and it needed to put these on top so that there was extra water capacity for steam heating.
@beeble2003Ай бұрын
@@jims6323 The original comment was poorly phrased. They're air tanks, but the reason they're on the roof is that the space between the trucks was needed for a water tank, not extra fuel as the video claims.

There is a book about the Soo Line "The Saga of The Soo". It has a photo of a passenger GP9 leading a F B-unit on a passenger train. They are both painted in the original maroon and gold paint scheme. Perhaps in 1954, Bugs Bunny popped out of the ground at La Grange Il, saw these freshly painted diesels and said, "What A Maroon!"? The "News Soo White" is actually a very light gray. The Soo Line passenger trains were not speedy, they maybe travelled at a maximum speed of 49 mph.

When you said the air tanks were moved to the roof for a longer fuel tank it didn't agree with what I knew. I wanted to be sure so i checked a diesel spotters guide and confirmed my info. Passenger geeps had steam generators in the short hood, and had the air tanks moved to make room for a water tank for the steam generator
