If we go back to the Kyle Beech story, it was this podcast that kept that story from being squelched by the NHL. The NHL had previously always been able to freeze reporters out. Now we have the Babcock story in Columbus being broken by a podcast. The old way of keeping control of players and the media which enabled abuse is over.
@misschrysalis
@misschrysalis Жыл бұрын
It was the SDPN podcast that kept the Kyle Beech story from being squelched by the NHL? Sorry but no. It was Rick Westhead's work that kept that afloat and I'm sure even these guys would agree. Rick was on the show once and SDPN talked about the case, but the Kyle Beach story would 100% still have come out if SDPN didn't exist.
@rodchallis8031
@rodchallis8031 Жыл бұрын
@@misschrysalis If you would take the time to remember correctly, the story was broken first by a radio station in Chicago. Westhead and Katie Strang then ran with it. But it wasn't being picked up by Sportsnet or TSN or other mainstream media. If you want a lesson in why that was, look at the way Bettman tried to freeze out Rick Westhead in the first press conference. The NHL, and Teams have controlled the media by doing such things in the past. They can't any longer. Would it have become as big a story resulting in the resignations/suspensions without the story being driven on podcasts? I guess the answer lies in how much you believe in the integrity of conventional reporters who are open to reprisal from owners/NHL. Evidence suggests not.

Babcock is just so weird. Imagine meeting someone for the first time and saying "show me the pictures on your phone, I want to know you better." Boy - that question about due diligence to Jarmo was certainly uncomfortable with Babcock sitting right there! Feel bad for the Jackets organization - but I thought that was a ridiculously bad hire right from the get-go, and unfortunately was proven correct. And this is a GREAT podcast guys. I don't always agree with your takes - but this situation is the exact test case for the weaknesses of the "old-school hockey brotherhood", and you laid out the situation perfectly.

As a Devils fan I can confirm that Adam is correct that you pre drink games. When I'm going to a game my friends and I usually have a couple beers on the train up to the arena and then there's an area right across the street from the arena with a bunch of great bars where you can have a few more drinks before you go in. So I end up buying one maybe two beers in the actual Arena. This is the way.

Foggy was the decision making to hire Babcock in the first place. It seemed kind of crazy after they made some big moves to improve their team. Except maybe a broadcaster suit playing it safe, I don't think there was a single hockey person who thought that hiring made any sense. The new head of the NHLPA probably told the Columbus management that they would haunt their team for the rest of Babcock's days as coach there. I hope everyone gives Pascal Vincent a fair shake. He's an award winning coach throughout his career and looks like the guy that should have been hired in the first place. A lot of teams would be lucky to have him behind their bench.

The Jackets dressing room right now has got to be a tomb. Their captain, who is supposed to represent the interests of the players to management and coaching staff, just came out 100% in favour of their coach and it took an NHLPA investigation to get younger player(s) to feel comfortable coming forward. More experienced players and bubble players clearly had different takes on this experience. But the fact that Jenner and other senior players didn't get the other perspective is a problem for their leadership.

@@dwaynedonnelly it's a question of power dynamics. Coaches can (and did) end a player's career because of how their interactions go. So a young player who is not comfortable sharing that info with their coach is under tremendous pressure to do it or be cut loose. The role of the Captain includes representing those young players. So Jenner doesn't have to change his opinion to be like theirs, but he is obligated to stand up for them. If he didn't take the time to find out, and only went on his perception of those interactions when he made his statement in Babcock's defence, that's a problem.

On the Fleury save, the reason he's so far out of position is because he's at the top of the crease facing a shot from ~blue line from Mikhayev, which is the correct play because it takes away the angle and works because the shot hits the crossbar. Unfortunately for Fleury and fortunately for the Leafs, the rebound off the crossbar lands on Pitan's stick, but the initial play definitely isn't a "if you're a goaltender tend the goal" moment.
