Thank you for the music, Sean! I first got hooked on shanties when I heard your rendition of "Leave Her Johnny, Leave Her", among other songs in Assasin's Creed. From there, I was introduced to the Dubliners, The Longest Johns, and the Irish Rovers, which have been some of my favorite music groups of all time. If it weren't for your music and iconic voice, I wouldn't know about all the lovely Irish and shanty songs I love today - thank you sincerely, Sean!

When I was a teenager we would sail a hobiecat on the Illinois river by Peoria,Illinois we would catch a strong wind and sling out on a trapeze to counter the tilt as a pontoon would rise out as we caught the wind and trimmed sails and jib. Coming about was fun as we tacked. A little tiny bit comparable to sailing other kinds of sailing ships. Of. Course a bit of grog and 1-2 fair maidens we might have the staggers and jabs back on land, Honestly what I learned quickly was mistakes could get you in trouble pretty quick as a big barge can not stop plowing water, and could churn up a sunken log. One time we almost got killed when we tipped the hobiecat over (mainsail in the water) in front of a massive coal or grain carrying barge., well my eye got about as big as a silver dollar as I rapidly calculated the closing distances. The barge started billowing it’s horn at us, but I doubt they even cut loose on power to their massive diesel engines. Me and my buddy heaved like we were insane to right the ship, it belonged to my friends dad and he would have murdered us if we lost his hobiecat under a barge, or we were going to die anyways. We caught wind thank god but the hobiecat took us for a hell of ride while we held fast to the rigging under the ship when it came to rest we were at a safe distance and scurried back on board to where we could regain the controls. Thankfully we had not been drinking that day, athletic as hell, but way smarter about our surroundings. Thanks for the sea shanties and sea songs,

You're not wrong in referring to a large ship as a boat. My husband was in the Navy and they even refer to the huge aircraft carriers as 'the boat'. So you saying boat instead of ship simply sounds authentic. I watched this with my 10 yr old and he asked what the meaning of the song was. To keep it clean I said that when the sailors are on their boats they want to be home, but after they've been home for awhile they want to go back to sea. He replied that they should live by the shore, that way when they miss the water they can go play in it, and then go back home. Haha such adorable innocence.

Hi Kelly. thanks for the info about the boat/ship. And I'm happy to hear that you were able to explain it to your boy. The lyrics I learned are even more, um, troublesome.

I really enjoy listening to music from different periods in history, and when I started listening to sailing songs/shanties/sea ballads (about two or three years ago) I got hooked. When I first started listening to them, seeing the occasional "Assassin's creed OST" in my playlists irritated me as it made me call into question the authenticity of the genre in general. After stumbling upon your channel and recognizing the name as "the assassin's creed guy"(sorry), I'm so very glad that they got someone who's genuinely interested in the craft and not just some corporate music company to churn out the songs. Thank you for the work you do, and I no longer question the authenticity of the genre because I've learned that there is no correct way to perform these works of art. Sure there are period/location specific versions/melodies, but the genre is small enough that any deviations from this tradition is done as an artistic decision, and not strictly a money hungry sense of "I must be different to stand out". I'm sure that still happens, but it doesn't seem to be the norm. Sorry for the rant. Again, thank you so much for your work, both as a listener and a history buff.
@SeanDagher2 жыл бұрын
Hi. Yes, it's an interesting question: can it be genuine if it's from a game. From all the work I've done with Ubisoft, I've learned that they really care about the history and the authenticity of the music they have put in these games. I'm glad you like the music.

Thankyou Sean. I love this song and your version is great. I have a real gripe with Longest Johns (whom I love) for dropping the Angeline verse in their recording and all performances of the song, giving him no reason to have to go to sea again! (When challenged JD claimed the song was too long and the verse was boring, but I suspect he was being pc about the use of the word "whore" which you sidestepped nicely by singing "girls" instead.) Sorry this is a bit long but you quelled my fear that dropping this verse was a trend. I particularly like what you did with the song's timing, which makes it sound fresh.
@SeanDagher2 жыл бұрын
It's tough to decide which verses to do, to drop, or to alter. Nelson gave me the idea of dropping a few choruses to keep the song from being too long. It lets us tell the story and it makes te choruses fresh.
@MarieahM2 жыл бұрын
@@SeanDagher As a fan of ballads like Tamlin the song doesn't seem long to me at all lol. But I think you're right that dropping choruses and making a small change is a better solution than dropping the key verse that holds the song together.
