I was used to The Longest Johns’ version of the song. It never ceases to amaze me how shanties can always sound good no matter the version that is sung.

That's what you come to learn about stuff like folk music, its proper interesting because there is no quote on quote "original version" these folk songs would be sung by ordinary people and passed down through generations, all with tweaks being made here and there to have the multiple versions we have in the modern day. Folk music back then was all about unity and it shows

Thanks Richard! I also wanted to respond to your comment about John Kanaka. I agree that it is probably a racial slur, and my version of the song is called "John come tell us" or "Mobile Bay." My version does not include that word at all. I should have specified in my other comment.

Oh yes! Nils did a bunch of the songs on Sea of Thieves. In that game they used the same tunes and they sometimes change the words to fit the game play. Cool idea and Nils did a great job of it.

Oh I know this one! We have a french version of it, called "Santiano", by singer Hugues Aufray. It is very famous in France. The lyrics, by the way, are really different: the french version tells about a man gone for gold on a beautiful ship. He promised to come back and marry Margot and bring back lots of gold

Great shanty as always. If love to know now about which style working beats each shanty was aiming to motivate. I've occasionally whistled a shanty to myself when I've been doing chores, but sometimes the beat isn't the right rhythm for what i was doing

you should check out home free sea shanty melody. it's a group who sing a capella but they make great music with their voices. very talented. the melody is wellerman, drunken sailor, leaver her johny, cape cod ships, and ofcourse santiana

Could this song also reference to the siege of the Alamo? Santia Anna lost a lot of men in the battle and in the end there was a lot of hand to hand combat between the Mexican and Texan armies and the result was a victory for Santia Anna.

The Czech version by the great Waldemar Matuska is actually pretty cool, you might want to check it out Sean. The French version by Hugh Auffray ain't half bad either, although granted, neither it nor the Czech one are sung as shanties.

Fun bit of history: his amputated leg was buried and given a state funeral. As he fell in and out of popularity, it was disinterred and re-interred with... befitting levels of pageantry, according to the mood of the people doing the digging. I was starting to type the story my Texas History teacher told me in seventh grade, that his prosthetic was stolen by Texas troops during the Texas war for independence - but, lo! Some quick research tells me it was not until later that he lost his leg. The prosthetic was stolen during the Mexican-American war, by troops from Illinois. It resides there, and periodically today different groups in Texas try to claim it should reside in my home state. Which, is awfully true to character for us, I suppose.
