Awesome mate! I'm not the young man I once was, and lugging a pair of big rods, a load of big leads and all the rest of the kit isn't something I can physically do anymore, so despite watching loads of sea fishing vids, I'd kind of put my sea fishing days behind me, but this technique is definitely something I can do! Back when the Firth of Clyde was swarming, we used coarse gear. A match rod, or light feeder rod, with 6-8lb line and small hooks(though big for coarse gear). It's astonishing how close in flatties come, even in daylight, and the same applies to many species after dark. They move in as the tide does, and I mean CLOSE. Cast 20 yards+, and you go right over the top of most of them, especially the flatties. A favourite spot was the bay to the east of the Rhu narrows. We'd dig in lots of smashed crabs, damaged lug and rag, and chopped fish, just off the gravel at the edge of the mud, then fish a float, or light ledger over the baited spot. The groundbait works amazingly well, drawing fish up the tide to the baited spot. Even codling and flounder fight incredibly well on such light gear.

Fished the other side of the Bay three weeks ago and caught my first ever flounder. Good size too. Fishing ended prematurely , as we nearly got cut off at the lost bridge, and had to get our feet wet. Going to go to your spot this week instead and hopefully grab some flounders and even a Turbot or Plaice. Good educational video btw. This time no tripod

@PiscatorUK-Fishing I noticed you mentioned salted mackerel Douglas. Do you ever use fresh or do you find you get as good results with salted bait. Certainly less smelly and messy.

@dmcallister7203 I do use fresh, not sure about the smelly bit😂I think it works just as good for flounder and other flat fish. For me salted mackerel has a few benefits, you can prepare it in advance for your fishing trips, it doesn’t deteriorate like fresh, stays on the hook better even without elastic and you can even cut it to size before your trip, making it more convenient when your on the shore when your hands are cold. No need for cool boxes and chopping boards.👌

@PiscatorUK-Fishing yeah, that's why I was asking. It saves a lot of hassle and cuts down on what you need to carry. I've used salted rag before which works well and stays on the hook better. I'm wondering about salting some fresh or frozen black lug to see how it works out. Also looking to use artificial baits like gulp worms but ot had much success so far. Having said that the jelly worms work well for pollack.

Good video! I bought a 10.6ft shakespeare flattie rod, very light too and ideal for that type of fishing. Can hold it all day long and feel every bite.

@PiscatorUK-Fishing it's just that. 10.6 ft flattie rod, by Shakespeare. Glasgow angling centre do it, I think it may be an upgraded version now, just under £100. Mine was £50, about 2 years ago now. I also think they have changed the colour. Mine is all a nice blue with silver whippings.

Enjoyed that What i do to help stop deep hooking is before you snug your knot to the hook J or circle , i put a 1" but of think mono 50 to 60lbs mono but sometimes i use 100lb mono . it seams cut the fish swallowing the hook.

@@Carl-sea-days thanks for watching mate. I’m also a keen coarse angler. I would say where bait fishing is concerned in the sea, I would say most use barbed hooks. Some de-Barb hooks for lure fishing. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a barbless sea hook in the shops. In my experience, I would say the barb keeps the bait on a bit better for sea fishing.

Good tips there , i never knew about circle hooks until i began sea fishing , we live and learn as we go in life Have to get back into it again as purchased more equipment and missed out on the Mackerel season recent months past But ill get out be it catch or not your getting nice fresh air into the lungs all good . Enjoyed your filming here and all the best and tight lines in the future A ---> Q/ to you Douglas ..How do you go about the eyes on your rod in re-salt water fishing as i find eyes can get rusted up a bit I tend to just wash with tap water when back in house and wipe over ..And have tried couple different things but dont think worked just asking ? Ive also re varnished with black varnish as i fly tie now then , re varnished eyes on rod and with the fishing rod i varnished over the eyes , i have not as yet used that rod since but thinking why not ? Although have few Rods different uses . Just asking regards eyes on rods in regards salt water fishing and rusty eyes Any tips there Douglas ? . Whatever some enjoyable fishing there and tightlines 🎣 in the future .

Hi Stevie. Thanks for taking the time to comment, very much appreciated mate. Usually rinsing in freshwater and dried is sufficient to prevent the eyes rusting. Often the eyes can rust in a damp rod bag though. A quick spray when the rod is dry with WD40 will give added protection. Thanks again buddy👍

@@adamfergusson1 thanks Adam. The beads are used a lot by shore Anglers particularly for flatfish. They act as additional attraction as flounders in particular are very curious fish and will inspect things that catch their eye. They are Not a necessity and you will catch in clear water but often help when the water is murky.

I'm envious closest I've come to catching a flatie is hooking a plaice and having it drop off the hook as I was bringing it over the pier railings and the other is debatable I invited a m8 fishing I gave him a rod to use I had to rig up bait up and cast it out for him and after a while with no bites I said reel in a few yards and they line went heavy but not fighting and he reeled in a plaice the size of a dinner plate, that was a big specimen for our mark, anyway who really caught it me or my friend, oh it was the same session when I had the drop off lol😢

Inside you caught it but at least he didn’t loose it and I bet he was chuffed to bits. I’ve not had the privilege of catching many plaice in Scotland and the closest I got was loosing a huge one myself as a teenager fishing on a pier when my rusty hook broke.

After you’ve salted and brined the mackerel do you keep them for future use and, if so, how? Fridge,freezer or neither?

@@davidburgess2354 Hi David, for the dry salted mackerel I just shake off most of the excess salt and put in the freezer because of the salt they don’t freeze fully, when I take them out for fishing I just add some dry salt to them in a bag. The salted mackerel in brine I just keep them in the fridge. Hope this helps buddy

@@PiscatorUK-Fishing Thanks Douglas, much appreciated. Where I live on the Dorset coast flounders are fairly uncommon from the open beaches although harbours such as Poole do hold decent numbers. I’m envious of locations like those featured in your videos where they seem to be abundant but I think your method will be effective for plenty of other species so I am keen to try it out as it will make a nice change from regular beach fishing where your eyes remain fixed on your rods in the tripod, therapeutic though that can be.

If you caught any keepers they apparently taste alot better on a big flat beach than a muddy estuary, I don't know personally but it's what I've been told makes sense.

I’ve eaten flounder in the past, definitely taste better from an open beach. If you get a big enough flounder, one of the best ways to cook them is whole on the bone baked in the oven👌
